News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

why compare? It seems to me that most of the disagreement centers around when potential life can be morally stopped.
Church is out of this discussion, because according to them, we should be impregnating every egg, for them, even contraception is a no-no. For the rest of the world, neither having 12 children or obstaining from sex is a viable solution.

So, when?
My fence posts are: chopping a fetus up and removing the pieces from the uterus is not OK.
On the other side, disabling a zygote from the attaching itself to the wall is perfectly OK.
So, in order to narrow that down, I think I need to know the neural stages of the pre-birth development, week by week.

What do you base your criteria on?

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

Babies are born with all the brain cells theye are going to have, the same number as an adult.

I think you missed the point. There is ample info available about the state of a child's brain when it is BORN. The information I'm looking for is the brain development BEFORE is it BORN.

Most of the arguments I hear against abortion is that the fetus can feel, or that it has a "soul", so it all seems to point to those brain cells.

Couln't find the info either?
The most I found is that at 4-6 weeks a neural plate of a developing human fetus is one cell wide.

I've been trying to figure out at how many weeks of a development, a human embryo has as many brain cells, or neurons, as a common fruit fly. Which is about 100,000. Can anyone help?

It is all horrible, and should all be avoided. That is what I will tell my daughter.

then, really, we should not have sex unless we're procreating.
But if zygote is a life, then so should be an egg, or a sperm, or every living cell.

cease to be separate ingredients and become a real living whole being who is at the very start of their human existence as a unique entity.

so you would be against the "morning after pill" as well?
Some contraceptive devices work by preventing a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the wall of the uterus..

,I don't think there could be life at the point of conception.

so when? That is the big question.
The choices span from: when the first cell divides to when the fetus could possible survive outside of the womb.

(and for trying to make it simple for others ...)

I'm sorry about your experience. Thinking about "what ifs" is really useless, though, don't you think? Just because now you wonder what that child might have been like now does not necessarily mean you would have done things differently if you had to do them over again. If you didn't have enough information to truly realize what you were doing then, maybe you were even less prepared to have a child?

I, too, grapple with the "when does life begin" question, but I would not take the right to choose from other women, who might have had a much harder road than you or I.

But, as long as we consider sex as a form of entertainment (nature's cruel joke, huh?), I would not put the milestone of a beginning of life at the point of conception.

Life / The "I am never wrong" phenom - is it the Polish thing? [63]

I think it's a sign of low intelligence. Not being able to recognize who's at fault, or judge the situation objectively, or at least being able to admit that own feelings may cloud our vision.

Stupid people everywhere.

Life / Polish people are the most ignorant people in the world! [331]

There are numerous examples where English is becoming a de-facto international language, such as English is the mandated language of international aviation.
Most of the key words in programming languages are in English, even foreigners inventing a new languages write it in English.

News / Does Polish hotel have right to turn down Americans and Israelis? [73]

That is an interesting question: Is there a need for a place where American tourist will not be found? And, if so...how do you cater to the clientele you want, without illegally excluding the rest?

Usually, that is done with pricing - where the undesirables are usually in the lower economic classes and are simply priced out.
But that would not have worked here...

I've seen a hotel in Miami Beach recently that tried to cater to gay customers only, where the rainbows displayed everywhere were still not enough for some clueless people.

Youth oriented places will simply blast the music in public places and warn potential guests that there is no use complaining.

So, how do you scare off a typical American tourist without getting into trouble?

Life / What's wrong with Poland? I don't see anything. [121]

There is a bumper sticker I see sometimes on the road, usually on RVs and I think it's my "polishness" that makes me think that the sticker is embarrassing.

It says: "We're spending our children's inheritance".

Life / What's wrong with Poland? I don't see anything. [121]

There is one type of American volunteer I see often: the ones that are separated from their families and friends, often because they do not want to share their wealth, or they want their contributions to be re-paid one way or the other.

They are usually lonely and bored, and the volunteering is their way to prove to the world that they are unselfish..
They think giving their struggling, but adult, children money is not the right thing to do. They prefer to give it to total strangers.
They prefer to eat alone, rather than pay for someone else's meal, or they'll think they are getting ripped off.
Polish people are able to live together, sometimes 3 generations, the parents give away all they have to their children to assure their better future, and in return have their children take care of them.

I know this is a generalization, but there is definitely a difference in cultures when it comes to helping one another.

Real Estate / Dzialki - allotment gardens regulations in Poland [27]

I thought about the feasability of starting something like this. A community garden we would call it at first, but give everyone their own little piece of land so they could compete. But Americans would not even CONSIDER it without running water, bathroom, and electricity.

Polish działki are really cool, and worth fighting for.
And they should stay in hands of gardeners.

mrorec parks?

I don't understand.. what kind of parks are those?

Or - what's more likely, given that the local gminas are quite poor (especially in the big cities) - they'll be privatised. People will get to buy them at not-quite-market rate and everyone will be happy.

They still have to watch out - the developers could pay more

Real Estate / Dzialki - allotment gardens regulations in Poland [27]

From the link below (that I could only get through the beginnings of), it looks like the power of these allotment garden owners union, PZD, was summarily taken away, and given back to gminy (local governments).

The link is the actual website of the union's (PZD), so you'd think they would list the actual 20 regulations that were stricken, but I can't find them anywhere.

Although it is said that these changes should not affect the gardeners directly, they are worried that this would make it easier for the governments to take these gardens back and sell them for profit.

So, the new allotment agreement, specifying the terms, such as time and fees will have to be signed with local governments, such as municipality etc., not the Union, which up to now assigned fees and protected members. There was no time limit on the right to use it, and, in a rare event that one garden was liquidated, another one would be assigned. Also, the fees assigned, supposedly did not reflect the cost of the land (location).

That said, I'm amazed that this union had so much power.
So now, it looks like these garden 'owners' will have to get more involved in their local governments, or their gardens will be sold to developers.

Real Estate / Dzialki - allotment gardens regulations in Poland [27]

I'm referring to the tiny little plots of land in Warsaw that were alloted, for the purpose of gardening, to 'exemplary' citizens and their families.

How does one go about getting one now?

Interesting..
so now, these plots of land are privately owned? Can one buy your neighbours' plots? Build a big house on it? Not pay taxes?
My understanding that those were just given for garden use, but the land still belonged to the state.
Has that changed?

Real Estate / Dzialki - allotment gardens regulations in Poland [27]

"The Constitutional Tribunal ruled on Wednesday that more than 20 regulations of the current law on family allotment gardens are unconstitutional."
Can someone help me find what 20 regulations, exactly?
And what do you think about these allotment gardens (działki)? I always thought it was one of the good, quaint aspects of Polish life. But, is it a leftover from the occupation, when we felt safer being able to grow our own tomatoes?

There are about million of them, mostly used by pensioners. Would this land be of more use if it was converted to public parks?

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [859]

do you believe this now, Gen. Petelicki??
If it is a suicide, it reminds me of that prosecutor that tried to kill himself in front of the cameras. The possibility that it was pilots' fault totally unravels them?

Or, if he was killed, that's even more interesting.

USA, Canada / Are there any Polish people in Florida? [311]

Orlando is amazingly full of new, interesting live music. Why? I don't have a clue, but it's true. Just go to any decent size bar in your neighbourhood, and in your "theme", and you might be pleasantly surprised. If I wasn't an hour away, and short a designated driver, I'd be going there every weekend.
