Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

I hope He does. :)

Each year brings sth new. This year we planted string beans - yellow and green. We did it late, in early August coz I got the idea by pure accident surfing the net. And the result is astounding - those bean plants are so low - only about 20 cm tall - but they give so many pods. I already picked about 3 kilos and there are a few more growing. Next year I am going to sow them in spring - the earliest string bean is quite expensive at shops - around 18 zlotys per kilo. Now I see it at 10 zlotys.

Well my hazelnuts have holes and maggots , my walnuts have gone black and shrivelled bugger.

Our 3 hazelnuts are still too young to give fruit. Walnuts are healthy but visibly smaller than last year - an obvious effect of the drought this year.

Food / Goose meat anyone in Poland? [20]

people used to buy goose grease as a chest rub for winter colds etc

Wow, funny. But they must have mixed it with camphor. I use similar ointment during colds, made in the US, called Ben-Gay. hahahahaha

Love / WHAT TRAITS DO POLISH MEN LOOK FOR IN A FEMALE? [34]

Sooner or later, females always look like their mothers. I still remember reading it in a marriage guide decades ago - you want to know how your wife will look like after 20-30 years? - check it out on your mother- in- law.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

This year I have grown about 50 tomato plants - all my own seedlings After a few weeks of eating a kilo every day, we started looking at them with a little disgust. I got a sudden idea of pickling them for winter like cucumbers. I have already prepared about 20 big jars. After two weeks of fermentation, I opened one. Wow, delicious. Amazing taste! I devoured all of them coz my family didn`t want. Strange people.

Ingredients: garlic, horseradish root or leaves, dill, sugar, salt, a little vinegar, water. I pour warm water over the tomatoes and tightly close the jars - no boiling afterwards!. One week is enough to get it pickled. Sugar is my invention coz I want them to be a little sweet. I added salt at the beginning but after the first series I stopped. Vinegar to make them a little sour.

Food / Goose meat anyone in Poland? [20]

another way is to stuff it with apples and prunes.

Like duck.

should be salted, peppered, sprinkled with marjoram and rubbed with 1-3 buds crushed garlic inside and out and left standing that way at room temperature

Wow,, you made me crave that goose dish. Maybe one day......
I remember having goose a few years ago, it was OK, but not too much different than regular chicken or duck, my taste buds aren`t so refined.

But I like goose fat which I use instead of butter on my sandwiches.

Food / Hopless beer in Poland? [30]

Czech beer which doesn't seem intended to make anyone drunk

Hmm, I think you tend to invoke certain cultural myths now rather than real quality of beers. How can Polish beer provide quick intoxication and Czech doesn`t if both have similar alcohol content?????

unexperienced driver,

Oops, sorry, dear students, I must have been tired. Inexperienced, of course. Can you cross that "unexperienced" out in your notebooks and write the correct form?

Language / It is not possible to translate names into English or Polish! [52]

One time a guy asked me about the meaning of the last name "Kolinski" --- I had no idea how to translate it.

Hmmm. Koliński might come from koło - wheel/circle. How about Wheelinsky/Circlinsky???

Funny thread. I think we might have a nice party here.

I didn't know that Kaprys. I have heard the name before but pronounced as it's spelt, with a W.

Did you watch the film about the Fish Called Wanda?

Interesting. How do you estimate it that beer is too strong? Taste buds? Hangover?

Food / Hopless beer in Poland? [30]

Oops, that`s extortion! :):)

That chocolate one might be interesting if it is sweet coz I like sweet drinks. Whenever I have regular beer, I add coke or another fizzy drink to it to make it sweeter. The only exception is strong beer, 9-10 %, which has a higher sugar content.

Life / Moving to Poland and not drinking vodka [27]

Not drinking alcohol is nothing wrong

In August we went to a wedding and were sat at a table for 7 of whom only 2 guys drank vodka served for us. The rest were either non-drinkers or drivers. I saw more drinking at other tables, also the one where my adult sons were sitting. Apart from vodka, two kinds of wine were served. But we stayed till morning and I didn`t see anybody really stoned. I must admit I was in huge shock. Amazingly cultural event in Nowy Sącz.

News / Bad news for beer-lovers in Poland (beer prices going up) [22]

Neither do I. I pay 2.50 zl for Amber Naturalny in my local shop

Interesting but after 8 years it seems to me that prices of beer are the same or only a little higher than in 2012. I mean beer in supermarkets coz draft beer in pubs has gone up considerably.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

We are back!

Ptak, I read your Random message about the sick tree - you talked to a Michigan University professor about it. So, a scientists told you to dig it out and burn. But did you forget Adam Mickiewicz`s verses about having a heart and looking into heart? Not all what scientists tell people is always so valid - human knowledge is limited - there are more things in heaven and earth, Birdie, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Still, thank you very much for taking care of the topic of my sick tree.

Life / Racism in Poland - the future [558]

If there will be lot of different ppl in Poland there will be racism for sure. If not there won't be any. Simple as that.

Nope. Even if there are no alien people in Poland, some narrow-,minded Poles, mostly PiS and nationalist voters, that is nearly 50% of the society, will still hate foreigners. The reason is simple: primitive people reject and fear the unknown , without having any contact with it.

so you guys cant just blame it on race for them hating indians, africans, muslims and even their neighbours:

Yes, there are such Poles and most of them, as I said, are PiS and other rightard parties` fans. They live in the countryside or boring small towns.

Life / Health Care Quality in Poland - NFZ vs Private [4]

I've spoken to 20 differed orthopedic centers in the region and none of their doctors will consider doing a surgery through NFZ.

Impossible. It is fully refunded by NFZ. The only problem is a long waiting time - even a few years in unlucky regions. Probably you wanted to say: none of their doctors will consider doing a surgery through NFZ within a month or two. That would be closer to the truth.

I'd prefer not to pay out 10-14K for the cost of surgery privately

Of course, nobody wants to pay through the nose if it can be avoided. But you need to estimate if the delay won`t cost you more than 10K.

Law / UK driving license mess in Poland [72]

In Poland it is the car which is officially insured, not the driver. You father in law can lend his car to as many people as he wishes.

Read this:

rankomat.pl/samochod/oc-na-samochod-lub-kierowce-czym-sie-rozni

However, if you are an unexperienced driver, he`d better notify the insurance company about it so that they calculate the insurance according to increased risk.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

I haven't heard 'mulat' (or 'mulatka') used frequently enough in Polish to consider it a current classification.

Coz now it is difficult to distinguish who is or isn`t one?? Or it doesn`t really matter anymore??
