History / The Two Saddest Nations on Earth... Poles and Jews [243]

Many thanks, Sire. Oh, and I appreciate the sentiment on the thread. People must get over their petty squabbles and learn to work together, to develop technology that will aid humanity and not destroy it.

In this respect, Poles and Jews must work together as there is much potential there.

Sire, do you live in Poland? The Jewish question is really not that big amongst common people, believe me. The Poles are more focussed on carving out their own way. I'd very much class indifference the lesser of two 'evils' when cast alongside outright hostility, wouldn't you?

Remember, don't make the issues of yesteryear a burden for those of today. They have their own pressing issues to contend with.

... this is a song of hope good old Moby. Very symbolic was the gesture of embrace at the end between an intelligence race/breed of dog and a dolphin. If people can't do what comes so naturally to intelligent beings, can we really call ourselves that intelligent?

Sire, it needs MUCH more than a forum to change popular sentiments. Change comes from both within and outwith. Besides, many Polish PF members didn't live through WWII. They were very different times. Poland has had enough of a transformation to go through after the collapse of communism.

Efforts are ongoing to mend the relationship. The thing is, you just don't see them.

Many thanks, Stu :) :) And I wish the Dutch the best of luck today :)

I just hope Poles can give the OP the benefit of the doubt and not read it as sad (as in hopeless/pathetic) but sad as in a very natural emotional reaction to events and realities around us.

If they do that, they will be on home ground. Much of the best music in life is melancholic!

Sok, this is not the time for such statements. Besides, I don't see what you mean here.

I don't think many really grasp the various tragedies that have befallen both sets of people. Mourning is part of the psyche and with good reason. I have experienced the latest loss in my family today as my grandma died (RIP). Now imagine this happening on a much larger scale. People need to look beyond numbers and get back in touch with their emotions. Academic folk in particular.

I always cite the example of murder. If we can feel the loss of one individual so acutely then we must surely be able to feel the loss of millions. Or are we so numb?

Outsiders, exercise caution in your writing and show some tact! Loss is painful and there is no getting round that! We can be philosophical about it which helps to ease the pain. However, let us never forget what we are!!

Sire, if you genuinely intend to honour the relationship between Poles and Jews, gazing past anti-Semitism and mere indifference, you should present the work of Isaac Singer. This person made major inroads into bridging the cultural gap and worked extensively on commonalities.

Love / Polish Women Versus Your Local Women ? [289]

The old no sex before marriage approach is just not in tune with modern life. You don't even get a sticker from the RCC for sticking by it ;) ;)

History / Polish and other Slavic nobility in our time [71]

Why does nobility interest you, Crow? Where's the appeal? It can create false people when you see peasants parading around like they are nobility. Poles often forget their former nobles, this much has been told to me quite a few times by Poles.

Love / Ten things to remember when you have a Polish girlfriend [79]

1) It's always Aniołku anyway so I can get round that one

2) Yeah, flowers brighten up the place so I don't mind buying them

3) It depends on her preferences. My wife loves mending things. The tea? It depends who is closer :)

4) It isn't always that way but painful when it is. Still, keeping the pace slow is no bad thing at times

5) You can touch them in such situations. Is that so bad? ;)

6) I was chatting with her mum today. I got the thumbs up very early on so I can't complain.

7) Oh, she outstrips me in the eating department but she's still 40 kgs lighter. Ah well, my diet, 2 footie games and swimming in the next 3 days will set me off on a good road. 2am is her munching time.

8) Oh, my wife thinks differently. I can't kiss any other woman bar her.

9) She would like to think so. We speak the same languages (English and Polish) and we know the same other languages pretty well (French and Japanese). Her parents speak fluent German so she was exposed to some as a kid.

10) Yeah, she enjoys it ;)

History / Lusatian-Sarmatic obsession of Poles [153]

Plk123, that was a classic. The good old pierogi Slavic fusion. The motto? 'Asia bringing Slavs together since the days of dim sum and cabbage' :) :) Tartare, sorry Tatar, anyone? ;) ;)

Language / Nice Polish words to say to a girl [147]

You chose the passive construction, the one that was asked for :)

Wouldn't you have to mention that it was the first time? I'd use poznać.

How very Christian of you :) :) :)

Kiedy Cię poznałem, Kasiu, spełniłaś moją marzenie??? I think it's this but I'm having a bad Polish day :( The resident Poles will have a laugh, then correct it.

History / Poles and (Polish) Jews... Victims of war... and beyond [380]

That's a good point and George Galloway knows it. He is sending a flotilla next week I think, entering via Egypt to Rafah. He has already had a run-in with the Egyptian authorities and will want to avoid a repeat of that. The powers have a way of manhandling you.

Israeli fears are well founded but they are bordering on paranoia. It gets ridiculous. Fresh fruit is allowed in yet canned fruit isn't. WTF?? I just hope that the muscle flexing ends soon as there are some big batters involved and some are ready to let loose. Let those Palestinian people enjoy water at least. It is gey hot in Gaza and they need basic amenities. I have seen how innocent families live in poverty and squalor. Forget the image of the militant fighter, they too have their cause, and remember the grief and struggle of those most in need. We moan about our lives being tough yet we have an abundance of technology and all of our basic physiological needs are catered for in the decadent West.

Let there be no more victims!

Rogalski, I saw that, yeah. The IDF soldiers should be punished only with a view to their breaking of international law norms. However, the people on that ship were very aggressive and the soldiers likely feared for their lives. I might have fired myself in such circumstances, you just don't know til you are in that situation.

Both sides blundered IMHO. As Finkelstein said, Israel had other options and has opened a can of worms. However, that ship undermined the aid effort's credibility given that they had weapons.

He can't change the fact that he is Polish :) He can just forego a Polish way of life! Yes, you have your right to comment too, of course.

True enough. It just seems to be a common observation but people are people.

It might be hard for him to move on from what he is, Ironside ;) ;)

He does have freedom of speech and I don't think he was being inflammatory. The accuracy of his statements is up to others to verify.

But it's a generalisation that has much practical evidence to support it, Ironside. Poles can be very touchy and that's just an observation, not a criticism.

I know what kind of Pole Ruslan is talking about. There are many hard-nosed and backwards sorts that accomplish little and only whine. However, Ruslan also acknowledged the other side. Such is life!

Yeah, Turkey will be told not to take action. A NATO member cannot initiate action against Israel so easily. What a mistake, though, riling Turkey.

Genealogy / What are common Polish character traits? [425]

Passing the buck pops up again. Sb damaged the photocopier at work yet didn't think to call the service line that was right in front of them. Rather selfish considering other people use that machine. The likely thinking was, 'well I didn't break it'. Jibbering and irresponsible toads aplenty!

There may be Jews to suffer in weeks to come. America is very close to Turkey so I wonder what would happen if Turkey attacked Israel. Turkey has a mighty army. Ironically, business will keep things together. Turkey and Israel have business ties and America, well, need I say?

Life / Price of cigarettes in Poland? [192]

Well, it has worked in many countries so why not Poland? I wouldn't have a problem with it.
