Apparently you circulate in some circle of expats

Nope. I simply don't mix with expats at all.

I've only heard positive things about EU membership from Poles - except for one slightly guy who's a fairly prominent Libertarian and even he admits the good things that membership has brought!

NATO HQ have made it plainly clear that the research unit was not a NATO organ but only cooperates with them.

So hunky-dory then for them to break in during the middle of the night!

The Scherchter bastard

Says so much more about you than him.

And still the pro-democracy rallies continue, a broad cross-section of Polish society are coming out on the streets, in the parks, in the towns and (maybe soon) on the beaches - all to stand up against the sort of nonsense in your post. Heartwarming that people are doing it, sad that PiS and their ultra-nationalist tendency are so destructive.

News / URGENT: Chechens refugees found a Islamic State in Poland [37]

Must everyone agree to this cooked up story

I don't think anyone agrees with it. It is indeed a cooked-up story.

Not worth having a thread about it; especially one prefaced with the word 'URGENT'

he overwhelming opinion I get on the EU from Polish people of different generations and class is a generally positive attitude for the good it has done Poland but a distinct lack of enthusiasm for the neverending increasing integration that is priority number one in Brussels

I've only heard the positive stuff, but the change here since EU entry is palpable - it's made a real difference for the better.

Any attempt to annex Western Ukraine to Poland would result immediately in a large and capable armed resistance.

That's a given. Amazing what an absolutely jaundiced view some people from outside have.

It's true that people in the Ukraine want EU membership, albeit it's a far off dream for them, but there isn't a cat in hell's chance of them being annexed in Poland, and nor does Poland have the wherewithal (or international support) to do it.

I can assure you that many Poles know fine well that the United States is not going to protect Poland in the event of war with Russia.

Quite. Through 4 decades of cold wat they certainly weren't going to do any such thing, at Yalta, their leader sold Poland to the USSR and very few of their citizens could even find it on a map.

One reason the Polish public support the EU so strongly.

Their tricks are rubbish anyway.

Quite - that polirical tendency has a reputation for crying wolf anyway, so the current crop of dirty tricks will mean that they can get away with less, and should one of their lame excuses ever in the future be half true, nobody will ever believe them.

I don't thing PiS have fully cottoned on how the Internet works. When they do, they'll probably try to ban it.

Back on-topic please

It's actually very much on topic, since the topic involves the current crop of dirty tricks and anti-constitutional behaviour by terrified PiS supporters. Basically they're wrong-footed on every level by the pro-democracy movement and whereas here they can only resort to abuse, in real life as we saw with today's bomb scare and last week's hacking scandal,,Poland's post-election political scene has become very dirty indeed.

Please stick to commenting about that because you clearly know absolutely nothing about Europe or Poland except what you find on Wiki or what you hear from other, equally ignorant Americans.

Spot on. Neither of the major parties have suggested for a second that a Brexit would lead to deportations.

And in the even far less likely event of Poland leaving the Union there is equally no chance of deportations.

Here in Poland the EU is very popular and enjoys widespread support.

One of the highest levels of support among member states.

Whatever various Americans with scant connections to Poland and no real understanding of life here think, Poland is not about to leave.

Looking in the mirror when you wrote that? Just a weak mirror, by the way, of the various dirty tricks that we've seen.

Your post, Po3, is a prime example of such nuttiness.

They forgot to mention whether he was using a lance or sabre

He had a duplicate key cut and turned up in the middle of the night with goons.

Soon, Po3, soon, sanity will triumph and Macierewicz and Kaczynski will be out.

If anyone isn't up to date with the sheer nuttiness going on in Poland at the moment, this article is a good one:

Polish military police have raided a Nato-affiliated counterintelligence centre in Warsaw in the latest of a series of moves by the country's new rightwing government to consolidate its hold on power.

The raid took place at 1.30am on Friday at the temporary offices of the Nato Counter Intelligence Centre of Excellence. According to the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper, senior aides of Antoni Macierewicz, the defence minister, accompanied by military police, entered the building using a duplicate key.

My post is entirely on topic. How will leaving the EU benefit Poland economically?

Exactly. All on topic, all accurate. It seems like some people who abandoned Poland long ago would prefer it to be like the old days before all the billions in infrastructure funding.

what do you need the EU funding for?

Roads, trains, trams, buses, hospitals, schools - and too many other things to put in one post.

Now do t be disingenuous - you know (or perhaps you don't, having been away from Poland so long) how well the economy improved before (obviously with considerable help from Europe, Poland being the largest net recipient of EU subsidies) and what a mess the current (hopefully temporary) regime are in, subsidies or not.

Of course, that gross amount will be lower in 2016

Plus of course their inability to deliver on their promises, like last time.

I do love the way that PISites know so little about Poland that they don't even know what the minimum wage is.

Figures and statistics are just another topic that they can only lie about.

'Fat-shaming' now, Po3?

I wonder how many of the PiS flappers could do with losing a kilo or two...

Yes, it is strongly supported (no matter how you may personally dislike it) - in fact approval ratings for the EU are particularly strong in Poland.

I'd prefer a referendum on Duda right now.

Yet another scandal and there will almost certainly be one. He hasn't done well at all. I wonder what his approval rating is.

The idea of a country where EU membership is strongly supported and which is the largest net recipient of EU funding leaving is bizarre.

Life / All Things Christmassy in Poland [332]

And in Scotland, the first visitor over the threshold after midnight on New Year's Eve was ideally a tall, dark haired man, as this was said to bring good luck for the year! He was known as the First Foot.

And always with a lump of coal. I do this in Poland too.

Incidentally, the latest poll shows that 72% of Poles think that Duda is a puppet of KaczyƄski.

And the rest think he's his cat.

Yes, any attempt to rush through late-night legislation (as is their usual tactic) will mean the end of Duda, the clown

The writing's on the wall already for both him and the party leader he is a puppet of.

Nostradamus, are we?

Based on last time PiS crept into office on a low turnout, it was heartwarming to see the large turnout that got rid of them. The pro-democracy demonstrations across Poland suggest this may well happen again.
