Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

he's an aloholic

That might explain my experience. I avoid alcoholics like the plague, and can't stand being around drunk people. Not that I have anything against (very) moderate drinking. I might have a good beer or glass of wine a couple of times a year myself.

Although the ratio of sober to impaired mass goers in Poland at midnight on 24 December is also rather amusing.

I never saw anyone who was not stone sober at Pasterka in all my years in Poland. Not in Chojnice, not in Skierniewice, not in Lowicz, not in Wrocław and not in Jelenia Góra. Nor have I seen anyone, of any generation, get drunk at Wigilia. A glass or two of wine was the max for the whole evening, and most didn't even drink that, being satisfied with kompot or tea.

Work / Water purifying system services and airconditioning system services engineer - in Poland? [3]

Concentrate on finding a job with a western company in a challenging environment like dessert, jungle, tundra or off-shore oil installations. They pay is very high, engineers are in demand, and this is probably the best way to advance in the corporation, earn your wings, and get a transfer to the home country. And save up a lot of cash in the meantime. It may mean living apart from your family for five years or so in tough conditions, but the best time to do that is when your kids are still young,

Network, network, network. The best jobs are advertised face-to-face, person-to-person in the real world. Internet job sites and recruiters get the table scraps. and rarely have any truly good jobs to offer. So focus on expanding your network of real-world personal professional contacts to include fellow Indians who work or have worked in challenging environments.

Study / British School of Warsaw in Wilanow [73]

Don't you think it's about time to get in direct touch with the admissions departments at these schools and ask them your questions? You could set up a Skype video call with them and get the answers straight from the horse's mouth.

Law / Polish Citizenship by Descent Question - Polish Citizenship Acts [36]

Please let me know what you think!

I think that if you want useful information, the only way you will get is by paying a good attorney with lots of experience in Polish immigration law, and not by asking on any anonymous internet forum.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

@Veritas1

No. Many are derived from personal names like Maksym or Makary, or from other words like "makry", the Ukrainian form of "mokry". See Stankiewicz:

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

It's a fairly common name that was used by many unrelated Polish families all over Poland, especially southern Poland. Were any of them Jewish? Perhaps. Without documented evidence, guessing will get you nowhere. And documented evidence is going to be extremely difficult or even impossible to find unless you have a concrete place of origin for your grandfather.

Work / How can I found job for Hebrew speakers in Poland? [46]

Why would you think that Poland would need Hebrew speakers? There is effectively no Hebrew speaking community in Poland. There are very few Jews living in Poland, and most of them do not speak Hebrew.

Work / How can I found job for Hebrew speakers in Poland? [46]

About the only way you are going to be able to do that is to find a job with an Israeli company doing business in Poland, or a Polish company doing business in Israel, and they are not going to be much interested in hiring you for a job in Poland unless you speak rather fluent Polish. In either case, you are looking at a very small market with very low demand for anyone except for very experienced sales professionals with a proven track record.

Work / Hi, I am Indian and will be shifting to Poland (diploma in Mechanical engineering) [47]

reputation

No idea. Check glassdoor and other sites.

Wouldn`t I have a better chance of finding a better job in richer European countries from working in Poland than from here in Pakistan?

No. It would be MUCH easier for you to expand and develop your network in Pakistan than in Poland. Let's not sugar-coat things. The job you are being offered in Poland is a "windowless basement" job that no one else wants. You will be cut off from serious advancement in the company. and your only contacts will be other low-level workers who can do nothing to help you advance.

UK, Ireland / Polish passport - UK citizen [16]

Both renounced polish citizenship decades ago.

That's a hurdle that will be difficult to overcome, if it is at all possible to overcome, without the help of an experienced Polish immigration attorney. Make sure you have the originals of all of the documents you will need: parents' and grandparents' birth certificates, passports, etc.

@marslan

You'll be able to live decently for a single young male. However, your savings are going to be rather unspectacular. The big problem with working in Poland is that wages are too low to make serious saving possible.

You would be better off finding a job either in a richer country with higher wages, or in a challenging environment like remote petroleum or mining installations.

Conduct a proper job search. Do not rely on internet sites, recruiters or headhunters. They rarely have good jobs to offer. Instead, expand and develop your network of REAL WORLD personal contacts. The best jobs are practically always advertised solely face-to-face, person-to-person in the real world. Internet sites and recruiters get the table scraps that no one really wants. Focus on networking with fellow engineers who work or have worked in richer countries or challenging environments. Be patient and persistent, and you will almost certainly find a much better job than this

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

@TwentiethNov

Absolutely zero. While that name does not appear on Stankiewicz's rather exhaustive list, the etymology he gives for similar names is a shortening of an old Slavic personal names like Wielimir or Wielisław, where the "Wiel" element means "much".

Law / Help regarding Poland's National 'D' Visa Appointment at Mumbai Consulate! [719]

@KnightHawk

A super-fantastic way to get banned from the EU for the rest of your natural life is to present to a consul documents that are not genuine or valid. If you do, you will be entered into the diplomatic databases and will stay there forever. Whenever you apply for a visa in the future, all consuls from all Schengen countries are required by law to check those databases, and they will see why you were denied.

Never, but ever, think for a minute that you are smarter than a consul or that you can fool them. They have lots of experience with people who are hiding important information, and they will see right through you.

Also, any consul in India is going to assume that any documents presented to him are fake until proven otherwise. Indians have a stupid habit of presenting counterfeit or altered documents. It's not a big deal in India. To a European, however, presenting false documents is like raping your wheel-chair-bound grandmother.

Love / About Marriage agencies In Poland [20]

Also, when you break of relations with her, just tell her to go away. Be firm. and, whatever you do, don't explain your actions no matter how much she insists. Once she manipulates you into explaining, she knows that you're a stupid sucker and that she can manipulate you into doing anything she wants.

So just say "Get out of my life" and leave it at that.

@James890

Yes, there is a BIG rat. She is using you to pay for her divorce, and will keep stringing you along to pay more and more as the case draws out. Once she gets the divorce, she will probably dump you. The best thing you can do is completely remove this woman from your life. Don't ever believe a single word she says. It's all lies. And don't let yourself feel sorry for her. She's a vicious predator. No good will ever come of any dealings with this woman, and you will lose a lot of money.

Law / Poland's Temporary residence card after marriage; I entered Europe without visa, the officials are stalking me [48]

@SigSauer

Actually, foreigners studying in Poland can work without a work permit. If they can find a job. However, what you said should be true. A foreign student who is working more than a minimal number of hours a week is unlikely to be a genuine student and it is possible that his student visa will be cancelled when he applies for an extension. From what I can tell, the Polish government has caught on to this and seems to have cut back a lot on student visas in the past year.

Law / Poland's Temporary residence card after marriage; I entered Europe without visa, the officials are stalking me [48]

@Patel_pooja

No. Generally, students on temporary visas are not allowed to bring dependents.

Practically, though, you will not be granted a visa to enter Poland as it will be clear to everyone that you have no intention of ever returning to India, and there is no way that you could convince them otherwise. It would be a waste of money to apply for a visa that you have zero chance of getting.

Love / About Marriage agencies In Poland [20]

She is playing game with you if she told you two or three months. If all goes well, it could take two years. If he is determined not to grant her a divorce and has a good lawyer, then it could drag out for many years, and cost her a lot of money and time. I suspect that you have volunteered to pay her attorney's fees. Don't fall for that. From what you have written, it will cost you a fortune. And when she does finally get the divorce, she will probably dump you.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

@TwentiethNovemb e

As I said, it is appropriate to translate it as "from Bagniewo", which is the name of a village in northern Poland:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagniewo,_Kuyavian-Pomeranian_Voivodeship

It is the name of the village, not the surname, that is derived from the word for swamp. Bagno can mean just about any type of wetland, including marsh and swamp.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

Not starting with "Z". There are no names that start with the letters "ZBAG" on Stankiewicz's pretty exhaustive list. There are several that start with "B", like Bagniewski, but that name is derived from a place name, Bagniewo, which is in turn derived from the word for swamp.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Who is a Pole? Make makes someone Polish?

It's very complicated. But the language and religion of one's ancestors have a lot to do with it. And nowadays, national borders and citizenship.

Like the person above with the surname Gryszczuk it's ruthenian but that doesn't make it not Polish. That person could be 100% Polish.

That's perfectly correct. And they could also have considered themselves 100% Ruthenian, as well. Or he might have identified as Polish, and his brother identified as Ruthenian. Or he might have identified as Ruthenian as a child, and then later as a Pole.
