Travel / Best places to visit in Poland [87]

Language / Is this true about Polish pronunciation of English (that some words sound identical?) [34]

Try -ough. There are nine ways to pronounce this in English. But one of my favorites is beach, as in there are many beautiful beaches in Poland. It comes out as bitch. I won't tell you my answer to that one . :)

I've got lots more... Choir. Great story behind this one.

Polish pronuciation is regular. English isn't. No wonder it makes my students crazy.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [656]

I have lived in Poland for four years. Most of what I've read here has been pure generalization, though some of it has been pretty accurate. There's a Polish look, but I can't describe it because it's really too diversified. I will say that I've seen a lot more overweight Poles here in the last couple of years, and I'm talking about the young people, but it ranges across the board.

What do Poles look like? Good question, although I was on a web site for biking in Norway, saw a photo of four people and said to myself that they were Polish. I was right.

I met a guy in a pub a few nights ago who didn't believe that I'm American. He thought I was Swedish or Danish-he's Danish-go figure.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

And to further complicate things, piwo becomes 'piwa'.

and piw

Piwo is the most important Polish word , so of course I learned how to say two beers-dwa piwa. And piw only comes into play after four, and by then it really doesn't matter, does it? :)

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

tomAYtoes

I say toMAYto, you say toMAHto. Guess what? Americans say both. It depends on where you're from and what your parents taught you when you were young.

I'm American, and I speak American English which means that you can hear the R when I say "I drove my car to the airport and parked in the car park".

No big deal. My books are British so I teach British English, but I also teach the difference between the two. Boot and trunk etc.

News / Poland reveals its new super car. [56]

My favorite Ferrari is the 275GTB. Memories. I had a friend with a 1957 Corvette convertible which had a $1500 dollar custom candy apple red paint job. (This was in 1969 as I remember). He was a pretty talented mechanic and machinist, but one day while fiddling with his carbs he experienced a backfire through the carbs that burned a hole in the fiberglass hood (bonnet).

A few years later, when I was in the Marines, my best friend left for a six month deployment and told me not to let the battery go flat in his silver 1969 427 Vette ragtop. Believe me, I didn't. What an awesome car, except on one rainy night. I was on a two way four lane road through town when I came to a red light. Stopped next to me was a VW Beetle. When the light turned green, he chugged on ahead while I spun my tires in the wet, even though I had used no throttle while while letting the clutch engage.

Ah, the good old days of motoring. :)

And my first car was a 1959 Jag XK-150 drophead cabriolet. Don't get me started on Lucas electrics.

News / Poland reveals its new super car. [56]

not driven a new one , the one i wanted was the old 60,s version...looks nice , but just does not handle....

i am sure they have sorted them out by now....

Oh, they have. My first new car was a 1970 Camaro SS 350, a pretty fast car for its time. I had initially fallen in love with a 1965 Corvette convertible with a 327, but my beloved ex-wife said no. A year later a friend wanted to trade his 1967 fastback 427 Vette straight up for my Camaro, but again, wifey said no. In 1964, I found a red Ferrari 250 GT Lusso for $8000. I had the money. Wifey said it wasn't practical because by then we had three kids. Aaaargh! It would have been a second car, but she had no love for things like that.

And for a million other reasons she's now my ex. Thank God. Check out the price for a Lusso today. Oh well. That's life.

News / Poland reveals its new super car. [56]

The current Corvette is anything but a dog, and even with that V8 it can get up to 30 mpg on the freeway. It's an amazing car at a fraction of the price of most European supercars.

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

Let me try to give you an unemotional response. I understand your reasons for carrying and they make sense to me.

As a kid, I had a .22 rifle which I used only for target shooting and plinking. I had it until I finished high school, but it was stolen when my family moved back from Japan to the States and I didn't miss it.

During my 12 years as an officer in the Marine Corps, including a tour in Vietnam, I didn't own a personal firearm, though I was around them every day. I never saw the need for one, and never put myself in a situation where one was necessary. I did bring my kabar to Poland, but only for nostalgic reasons and it remains in my room as a memento.

This is Poland. I've been here for four years. You don't need a weapon of any sort here, and I think carrying one on the street would be crazy for all the reasons posted before. Poland's a safe country. Enjoy your stay here, but please leave your guns at home.

News / John Paul II's Beatification [134]

Also regardless of a religion, JP II was a great and a powerfull man, he'll be remembered next to such figures as Mahatma Ghandi and for that alone he deserves recognition that sainthood brigs with it.

John Paul II isn't being beatified because he was a good man, although he was certainly that. Beatification is the first step on the way to becoming a saint. First, the person must be dead, and he or she must have performed a verified miracle. John Paul II has done these. To become a saint, the Pope needs to confirm a second miracle.

Interestingly enough, not one of the almost 100 Poles I spoke to last week thought it was important for John Paul II to become a saint. They love him for the good man he was.

Btw, I'm neither Polish nor Catholic.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

I speak Polish, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, and English fluently.

That's impressive.

Any list that has Japanese ranked below languages that use Latin alphabets is not worth taking serious.

Oops. Not so impressive. It should be seriously. But overall, excellent stuff. Now could you be bothered to become a member?

History / Tuchola in Poland - roots of Katyn? [220]

Really?

Really. If you weren't so obtuse you'd see the obvious difference. And no, I'm not Polish, just objective, unlike you.

History / Tuchola in Poland - roots of Katyn? [220]

We can call shoots in Katyn as epidemic too.

Yeah, it's called lead poisoning from Russian bullets fired by Russian soldiers. There's no comparison.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish Americans mocked in the American media? [226]

As for this topic - are you all implying that polish jokes disappeared?

Take the word "Polish" and substitute any other ethnic group. The jokes are still the same.

Why are you so thin skinned about this, especially since you don't live in the US. And I still think you're a troll. You can't even be bothered to register.

I love these people who post provocative threads as guests. They can't be bothered to register. Sheesh! GO AWAY TROLLS

Scottie half of the posts here proves that you have some problems and complexes because of it

Check your grammar, then disappear troll. No, I'm not Polish, but I live here.

Work / CV/Resume style standards in Poland [17]

Wow. I took a peek at the CV link above and my jaw dropped to the floor. Omg, totally unthinkable in the USA, in color, with a picture, age? If any company requested it on the resume here they could get sued...you are not even supposed to say the year you graduated from college. Only your credentials count. I'm speechless.

I agree. My students can't believe it when I tell them that. The first year I was in Poland only a few friends knew when my birthday was. Somebody mentioned that they could always look at my CV to find out. Not so. My resume is not a CV per se. No picture, no date of birth, no cover letter, etc. I got my job after a face to face interview. There were four other Americans teaching at my school that year, two full time and two part time. None had photos or dates of birth on their resumes. No problem.

Marital status? You've got to be kidding me. Unfortunately, what Bolle mentioned does happen here.

Oh, that obsession with the left ear is so right on! And don't smile.

Law / Foreign retirees taxed in Poland? [25]

OK, here goes. I'm an American teaching in Poland. As such, I pay Polish taxes on money earned in Poland, as I should. I file US taxes annually and have to declare how much I made in Poland. I provide the appropriate Polish form to document this. I can earn up to 91,000 US dollars in any country or countries outside the US before I have to pay taxes to the US on it.

I have applied for US Social Security-yep, I'm old. That money is not taxable in Poland, but it is in the US. It's a pretty simple system, and I've got the IRS publications which explain it.

History / Ghetto Uprising better known than Warsaw Uprising? [111]

Americans confuse the two, that's if they even know that there were two uprisings. In fact, when asked about the Warsaw Uprising, the usual response is; "yea, that's when the Jews resisted the Germans".

Man, that's a pretty broadbrush statement. Some of us actually know a little Polish history. Tread softly here.

History / Ghetto Uprising better known than Warsaw Uprising? [111]

How could they have done anything. They were somewhat busy in other parts of the world, or don't you know WWII history? That's not meant as a slam, but I thought your comment was rather pointless.
