Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

But people commit more murders if they have access to guns. Your statistics about Britain are right but the level of crime is tiny compared to the US. If the U.K. really were the 51st State it would be more than twice safer that then next best (Maine).

Czech, Norway and Switzerland do not have free access to guns. Ammo is strictly controlled in all cases and automotive weapons are banned. In any case there is little difference between the murde rates in Czech and the U.K. Norway and Switzerland are safer for the simple reason that they are richer.

According to a CBOS and TV republica survey then 86 percent of Poles are against any liberalisation of the gun laws. I hope that is a source you can trust !

And there is nothing leftist and it gun control - all parties in Europe favor it . I reckon the Spanish laws were probably put in place by Franco. The issue has only been raised once in my memory in Polish politics by Kukiz - unfortunately he chose the day of the Las Vegas shootings to do it and end3 up humbling the usual nonsense about how triucks can be just as dangerous.

News / Goodbye Sunday Shopping in Poland - Hello Electoral Reform [246]

Most stores are not closed on Sunday - all Major chains open 7 days a week and the only places where stores close are small town high streets.

The law has so many holes in it that it will soon be scrapped - people should be able to go shopping whenever they feel like it. If any employees really object to working Sunday there are plenty of other jobs going

I don't know what an FOID card is but we don't have them in Poland and even if you have a 3D gun you could not get ammo. Which is good because guns are dangerous and the vast majority of Poles don't want them on the street.

The U.K., France and Germany all have far lower murder rates than the US.

Wouldn't it take about a week to print it though ? Plus a lot of power ? Can you print the ammo too ? By the time you do that you might have calmed down and decided the best way to deal with your noisy neighbor would be to call the Straz, rather than shoot him.

News / Goodbye Sunday Shopping in Poland - Hello Electoral Reform [246]

I think the reason they went for the 2 closed days is to see how the tax revenues drop. In Hungary it did not put much of a dent on the foreign retailers market share (big retailers had big car parks and were more able to handle the Saturday extra sales). It did however cause a big fall in Vat as people had less time to spend on discretionary and fun items.

Those were different times in the 90s - people had no money and even if they did there were no nice stores to visit. Now it's very different and people will miss Sunday trips to the mall very much.

To me it's a question of free choice - want to go to church on Sunday ? Fine. Want to shop on Sunday ? Also fine

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [229]

You can subtract them and you can subtract Latinos and you can subtract young black men if you think their lives are worth less. The number of white native born American gun related murders is higher than all the deaths in the West from terrorism.

In fact I reckon you could pick a very white peaceful state like Minnesota or Maine and the same would be true.

My guess is that US gun deaths far outnumber deaths from terrorism since say 1989 when the Cold War ended. It is consistly over 10.000 people per year, including babies, grandmothers and literally thousands of other innocent victims.

What is it with you guys and the schlong waving about pay stubs and cars and how educated you are ? I am always reading that of the apparent reasons for the attractiveness of the far right is that US males feel insecure and this kind of playground talk would back that up. I think the last time I compared pay stubs with someone was after a particularly hard week at Waffle House.

As I have said on countless occasions, wanting genuine refugees to be treated decently, in accordance with UN treaties and with Christian moral codes, does not make you a leftist. There are refugees in my own family and I think in most families in this part of the world. I don't expect to be rewarded for that view - it's just what we are taught in school and in church.

Like many Americans you seem obsessed by this idea and feel you have a duty to save Europe from some terrible fate. Rather you should look at this as a complex problem which will take time to fix. Your own govt needs to look at its own actions via a vis two of the main drivers - instability in the Middle East and climate change.

Like many people in Europe I see Trump as a greater danger to security than I do muslims.

You are back ranting again about your cruise ship. 50 Euro per head per day - consderably less than the cost of locking up a prisoner in Illinois.

You know the difference between ancestors and descendants right ?

The same arguments about our ancestors building the country are used by racists everywhere but especially in Britain against Polish immigration.

Before getting Democrats to work with him, Trump first need to get republicans to agree with him. That's not going to be easy to do, when you have spent the past two years insulting and belittling them. I thought this guy was supposed to be the worlds greatest deal maker?

He was elected, probably fairly, and he has a Republican house and Senate. It is up to him to deliver his agenda and not pass the buck all the time, especially regarding laws that were passed a generation ago.

It is the same with Brexit - now that the idiots that organised it have to deliver on their promises, they are suddenly blaming everyone else for the fact that it is very difficult and everything is still the fault of the EU or Remainers.

If you want to put this back on topic, then I would suggest that recent vote in Austria France, Holland and Germany show that people have now had a wonderful one year live experiment before heir eyes showing what it's like to put idiots in charge. To solve deep problems you need to engage all of society not just 50% and deliberately antagonise the other 50%.

I can't think of any government in the developed world more focused on redistribution, and more opposed to liberal economics than PiS. 500 plus is to be followed with a pensioners version, effective tax rates are increasing as deductions are cut off, banks are taxed half of their profits, state owned companies favor employee benefits over shareholder value.

All of that has to be paid for by about 9m taxpayers, which is roughly the 39 percent figure you use :)

Work / Is it difficult to make a living playing Soccer (football) in Poland? [54]

Probably quite low - there is a limited number of professional teams here and outside the top 2 divisions the money is probably less than you would get working minimum wage in the U.K. So you would probably need another job to support yourself.

Well you probably have more experience of those places than I do. Most of my exposure to the Muslim world has been in Pakistan and Bangladesh, but I haven't really travelled in the Middle East. There are plenty of unsavoury aspects of western culture, I have just come back from my morning swim, where I saw vapid tattooed girls taking endless narcissistic selfies (not that I minded !).

Of course, you have no problem taking their money! Not sure what line of work you're in - defence? But in order to pay you they must have some level of civilisation.

I am not in favour of unrestrained immigration, but I am in favour of genuine refugees being treated with the same dignity as Poles and Hungarians were in the 40s and 50s. I also believe that Poland should aspire to be a modern, cooperative member of the EU and not just to replace the UK as the awkward squad. That means working with our neighbours to solve big problems and little problems.

Thinking Poland should abide by its previous agreements and contribute to the EU does not make you a radical leftist statist.

And the EU was certainly far more than just an economic entity when Poland voted heavily in favor of joining in 2004.

I'm generally a right wing person - business owner, believe in low taxes, individual responsibility, small govt; but being honest I see more danger in the world today from Trump, Putin and Erdogan than I do from any migrants or from what you appallingly refer to as 7th century cultures.

Life / Gdansk Tips for Person relocating there [26]

Yes possibly - but they would struggle to wash, dry and iron in 100 zloty session ? With a dry cleaners you just dump the mess on their desk and let them do their thing. I guess I am normally dropping off a few other things - suits, ties etc that I wouldn't trust my cleaner with :)

Dry cleaning is slow and expensive in Poland but getting better. You will pay about 80 zloty for a weeks worth - most shopping malls have a place with convenient hours. I don't know of any Service where they pick it up from your apartment.

Work / Is Poland's ZUS obligatory for a one man LLC? [13]

I was not aware of that change which was implemented last year. It seems to have closed a loophole whereby you could pay yourself as a director and avoid ZUS. Not sure what country you are from, or if you have the possibility of one other person taking 81% of the shares, but it's best to discuss that with an accountant.

Work / Is Poland's ZUS obligatory for a one man LLC? [13]

I think maybe the terminology you use is confusing. If you mean a limited liability company, sp z o.o, then this does not need to make any ZUS contributions. If you pay yourself as an employee then you would need to pay ZUS at circa 19 percent.

If you are not talking about a limited company, but rather a sole trader, dzialalnosc gospodarstwo - then you need to pay the flat rates of ZUS described above.

So when you say "we" does that mean you are active in one of these idiotic Dads Army operations ?

Their anti semitism is not just "one unfortunate thing" - it is a very important part of their ideology.

But from what I have seen most of these morons are more interested in casual violence, cheap amphetamines and souped up cars than in real politics so they are mostly harmless and comical.

News / Poland on course to end European winter/summer time [19]

Finland, the Baltics, Romania, Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus are all in the EU and would all be on the same time zone if we changed, it's a matter of geography not politics - I'm in favor as I hate those dark mornings taking the kids to school. As it stands Poland is not in its natural time zone (edit having looked at a map it probably is, but at the edge of it and I still hate getting up in the dark)

I didn't know Moscow has changed its time zone in 2014 - thought it was still two hours ahead so I learn something every day !

Life / Price of cigarettes in Poland? [192]

PM have been making them in Augustow since communist times. They don't taste the same as US Marlboro, but the packaging and branding is the same.

Many other US products have been made under licence in Poland - Miller in Poznan, Gillette in Lodz, Snickers near Warsaw.

Law / Weapons laws in Poland. Carrying a concealed handgun? [918]

I see that with great timing Kukiz 15 have proposed liberalising the gun laws. Only 11 percent of Poles support this and 40 percent say that rather than being left alone the laws should be strengthened.
