Food / Polish kishka [76]

I couldn't see any on there...and I am pretty sure blood sausage (be it kaszanka, black pudding, boudin noir, etc) in any of it's forms is not kosher, so it seems like a doubtful source.

Life / Polish Wedding March & Funny Hat [37]

Sounds like a load of tosh to me.

It could be, as said in the post above, a Polish-American thing. But I have been to plenty of weddings in lots of different parts of Poland and I have never seen anything described in the link we were given.

So, Angelbina00, I agree with Magda here. If you know it to be a tradition with your family then go for it, but I wouldn't say those are traditions as such.

And, concerning that wedding traditions website. I wouldn't give it much notice, I just read the Scottish Traditions and, like with Polish and 'Czechoslovakian' it seems to be quite a lot of folk tales and little village traditions that are rare or outdated.

And, I am sure a Polish person can fill you in with the proper lyrics, but every wedding I have been to have had people singing "Nie pijemy wodki, nie pijemy wodki..." and so on for plenty of different verses while the bride and groom kiss.

Work / Poland Work Permit / Study Visa Processing Times [191]

This doesn't really help, but I am just annoyed by the whole visa process. I had a friend in New Zealand from the UK (commonwealth country of course) and she has been trying for 3 years (while in New Zealand) to get a permanent residence with her fiance. She pays a fortune in lawyers costs and just as she is about to get it they say "but you have overstayed your time" to which the response is always "that's because I was in the middle of YOUR paperwork!" and the process starts again.

t should be made more simple and if you have guaranteed work then it should be fast tracked through.

Law / What are the bike laws in Poland? [30]

You should always yield to pedestrians.

One of the things I hate about walking about the centre on a nice day. Bloody cyclists going fast winding inbetween pedestrians without a care. I have lost count of the amount of times I have almost been hit or have seen others get hit.

I have no problem with them being on the pavement, just if they would take a bit more care when it is busy then I would appreciate it.

News / Nuclear Power in Poland? Yes, please! Absolutely nobody disagrees! [73]

Chernobyl was a disaster, yes. However it was also badly maintained. France has a huge nuclear power base, and as far as I know there are no disasters there. Nuclear energy is much more safe now and, to those who compare it to green energy, provides an almost infinite amount more power for the area a reactor takes up.

Take it from a physicist, nuclear power is the way forward.

Food / What's your favorite Polish coffee? [73]

I personally am not a fan of this style that a lot of people here seem to enjoy (ie. putting the grounds straight in hot water and drinking with the grounds still in it) because I am just not keen on the grounds...but each to their own.

I have always liked espresso style coffee, I quite like Illy or Azzuro beans and a nice strong double espresso.

Not a huge fan of what I think of as American coffe (ie. filter coffee) but I will happily drink it if it's fresh.

Life / Giving tips in Poland [235]

That's probably the issue. But I know a few exceptions that may keep the balance :)

I have found the exceptions are increasing in number too. I think opening up to a wider tourist market has had a very positive effect on service here. An easy example is to go to a bar in Rynek Głowny (Kraków) or Kazimierz then go out to one of the places in the suburbs...they are worlds away from each other.

Bartender for 8zl? I'll take two please.

It was a struggle on that. But I have heard that gradually wages for service staff are going up, which is a good thing. However, not as fast as living costs are going up...but hopefully we'll find an equilibrium soon.

Life / Giving tips in Poland [235]

That's below minimum wage....the golden arches start people off at 8zl

Well when I started as a bartender I was on 7zł and moved up to 8 working behind a cocktail bar. There are plenty of people I know on as low as 5zł per hour and not only in the hospitality industry.

If that is below minimum wage then there obviously aren't very tight checks on it.

Life / Giving tips in Poland [235]

how much does a waiter make per hour in PL... ?

It varies quite a lot. I know some waiters that are on 5zł per hour, others who are up at 10. Bar staff are paid slightly better (between 8 and 15). As you can imagine, that is not a huge amount of money, but still I wouldn't expect a tip from anyone.

I would appreciate it when I get one, and be disappointed if I go to extreme lengths to keep a customer happy then received no tip at all...but that's just life.

Life / What gifts to take? Presents customs in Poland. [167]

a roll of gold $1 coins

So is there 2 different types of $1 coin? Because I have heard silver dollar mentioned in movies before and so I presumed them to all be silver.

Life / POLISH DANCING (how to to this holding hands and such?) [11]

I was just wondering if Poles learn this from their parents , or at school , they all seem to be pretty good at it

I wondered the same to be honest when I was at a wedding. It made me feel rather out of place because I just don't know how to dance like that beyond a basic box step and a that spinny roundy thing where you hold their hand above their head and they spin.

But I guess they would have the same issue if they were to come to a ceilidh (but we are taught all dances at school).

Life / POLISH DANCING (how to to this holding hands and such?) [11]

but its not quite the sort of dancing i was talking about

Just what I was going to say.

kingpolkakamon, I think you are getting the wrong idea. The videos are great, but it is of Polish and Russian girls trying to dance in a rather Afro-Caribbean fashion not evidence of typical Polish and Russian dancing surely?

I am sure wildrover is meaning the kind of dancing that people do at weddings and such like.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

Afroamerican (Afrobritish, afrocaraibbean

I actually heard some mock offended handwrigner say that this is all now racist too because african should not be shortened to afro.

So it is African-American/British/Caribbean.

Nonsense the lot of it. You can tell if someone is being offensive by their tone and intonation, there is no need to brand certain words as illegal or offensive.

Just like when amongst friends, you can refer to someone as a silly ba**ard when they spill their pint and no-one cares. You go up and say the same thing to a stranger who you have just spilt the pint of and it's a whole different kettle of fish.

Life - it all comes down to pint spilling analogies.

Work / Teaching English in Zakopane, is it safe? [45]

Really quite worryingly popular. There is a really popular one that meets on a Sunday morning all around the country and they burn things and chant and talk to dead people and deities...

But seriously, I think they will probably be like most other places, minorities mainly with a good mix of rebellious teenagers just for good measure.

WB just wants the Autobahn (it rocks!), I assume is his main argument here.

And quite a good one it is too. Autobahn is the way forward!

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

M-G, I was talking specifically about soups. Go to the Baxters of Speyside website as an example. Generally, I don't rate Scottish food so highly (fish and soup being the exception).

In the way you were meaning it, we are wizards at making something out of nothing. Stovies, Tattie Scones, Haggis, Mealy Pudding, Black Pudding...the list goes on of food basically made from leftovers and non-prime cuts. And M-G, you were missing out by not trying haggis, it's delicious (and deep fried mars bars are a running joke to most people in Scotland).

But back to Pizza. I love pizza! I love Italian style pizza, cooked in no time at all with a thin crust and a wee bit of fresh mozarella, garlic and oregano. I love polish pizza with the sweeter tomato sauce and mountains of toppings. I love my deep fried pizza out the chippy. I love my cheap spicy chicken and sweetcorn pizza out the late night pizza shop that is only half cooked and so delicious. I love chain pizzas, greasy pizzas, doughy pizzas, thin pizzas...

...are we getting the point?

Personally my favourite pizzas are the traditional Italian pizzas with minimal toppings. However I would love to go to Chicago and get a full on deep dish bad boy. To follow on from an earlier post...let's arrange a world pizza and beer tour...now THAT would be awesome.

Food / Your all time favourite Polish Dishes! [108]

how could that be a (favourite Polish dish), if i wanted leaves in a sandwhich

Not a bread roll!!!

It is minced meat rolled in a cabbage leaf and then cooked, often with either mushroom or tomato sauce...it's well tasty!

Food / BREAD IN POLAND IS DETERIORATING [90]

Morning rolls, I think I know what you mean. Soft and good for ham with mayo?

The ones that are proper crispy round the outside but soft on the inside.

Tattie scones are legendary

I might make some for the Paintball tournament.

where are the decent bread rolls?

Glasgow, you don't even get them in Argyll. Glasgow is the only place for decent morning rolls.

Food / BREAD IN POLAND IS DETERIORATING [90]

use of polepszacze (bread improvers), packets of chemcials ensurign high yields at the expesne of flavour and nutrition;

You will find this mostly with supermarket bread. People just often don't have time to do all their shopping in independant bakers, grocers and fishmongers. Plus they don't have time to go shopping every day for a loaf of bread they are likely to have to throw out. It's not a good state of affairs but that's just how it is. People are more likely to go shopping once/twice a week and so need bread that will last, even at the expense of flavour/nutrition.

Life / nasza-klasa.pl - If you looking for your classmates or friends in Poland [95]

Firstly, whats the point of a non pole joining Nasza Klasa?

When I was living there I met and worked with lots of people who did not have facebook accounts. Now that I am going back it gives me an easy way to keep in touch with them (as my phone was stolen before i left) and meet up again.

I can, just, see your point. But if you have a few Polish friends you want to keep in touch with then not using NK because it's "only for Poles" is a bit of cutting off your nose to spite your face, no?
