Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Bake it yourself.

We do that in PL, partly because the stuff in the shops nearby is so bad. We also make cheese.

Just doesn't sound very appetising

Without the yolks, it's much less appetising. Provided it's all very fresh though (be VERY careful about this in PL, only buy from somewhere that sells a lot) it's actually quite nice.

What do you think of this? It is Christmas sweet carp

OK for once a year!

t is not proper one from bakery but chemical s..t.

Much the same for me. I saw the 'tost and thought it would be ok ;-)

The chleb/bułka split always used to confuse me ("Chleb, proszę" "Nie ma chleba" "ten chleb tam na półce" "nie ma chleba" itd, itd, itd), however when I felt a bit homesick, I used to buy Bułka Wrocławska.

I think most of these are Italian recipes.

Some, plus sourdough recipes. In both the UK and PL, traditional baking (and cheesemaking) suffered a lot in WWII and the lean years afterwards. Hopefully traditions are returning (and new ones being formed) in both countries.

Genealogy / What does my Polish name mean? [402]

It certainly exists in Poland. According to one of the links below, there are about 25 people with the name, all down in the South-West.

I think it depends where you shop.

This is true. I remember someone complining about British bread. He'd only ever bought the cheap stuff at a corner shop. Going to the UK and just buying Sunblest or whatever is much the same as if someone came to Poland and only tasted that 'Baltonowski' rubbish of that 'tost' which is just long-life Pullman loaves...

meat-cut-packed- not sure what's inside

Remember the methods of cutting vary from country to country (even between England and Scotland). In Poland, even after 3 decades I still find myself looking at a piece of meat and wondering what it actually is.

Don't even mention British sausages.

Delicious, and sausages rather than sausage; two very different things. Have you tried Polish horse sausage? An acquired taste and quite an unusual texture. I bought some, tried a bit and gave the rest to the doggie.

I find that Polish beef lacks flavour

Very much so; not aged at all, in the shops right away, and of course they don't have butchers as much as meat shops, a different thing and less good. If you ask them for something that isn't waiting in the tray, they can't provide it and are surprised that somebody asked.

I find the chicken in PL to be completely tasteless. Fed on chemicals and kept in cages in the dark.

You convinced me. I'll try it.

A couple of years ago it had got to mid-January and I was in Warsaw and thinking of Burns' Night but had no haggis. As if by magic, a friend who works as an inspector of something called and said he'd been given a smoked sturgeon (jesiotr) as a bribe. I thought "Rabbie Burns - Scotland, Scotland - Sturgeon). We called it Nicola and it was actually very tasty, albeit scary looking...

I think Fish n Chips from Yorkshire are the best there is,

We take them seriously in Yorkshire, however Lancashire chippies are pretty good too.

For some reasoin, it's always haddock in Bradford, and cod in Leeds. Whitby (which someone mentioned) has Whitby Woof (there's Scarborough Woof too) which is a sort of catfish. Not dogfish...

In Poland, fried fish is a little different, not battered (so not succulent) and fried a little longer. Nice with beer though. Also, the word 'sola' does for both sole and the cheaper plaice which it usually is. Also, since frozen prawns started to appear in shopds in Warsaw (when I first moved there you didn't ever see them) people prefer the larger ones. These actuallyt have less flavour than the smaller ones, however in PL people serve them as a treat and like the look of large and unpeeled ones.

A good rule of thumb is that the UK does sea fish and Poland does river fish. Except for pickled herring, which I like, however some people from countries where it isn't common just won't touch it.

Now szczupak, just no!

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

Actually, we have 2.5 big city apartments. Is it illegal? :)

Yes. Remember if you do a difficult and stressful job which contributes to society, makes people's lives better and helps to mke the world a better place, it's a strict legal requirement that you live in abject poverty with no possessions except a pair of sandals and a (second-hand) pot to p1ss in.

God forbid that Nurses, Teachers, Care Workers, Firemen etc could ever earn a good salary. What a shocking thought! We leave those riches to people who really deserve it like personal injury lawyers, football agents and reality-show 'stars'.

The teachers union has become the strongest union in the country.

Good!

Some uneducated people dont value educators

Pretty well.

Not the easiest job, sometimes rewarding, though always hard work. I wouldn't like to be one myself nowadays. Teaching Special Ed in a locked Secure Unit back in the day was hard enough.

Travel / American Visiting Polish Military Base. Issues? [13]

You'd need a Przepustka. These are issued by the relevant person at the base and are (or were when I had one) just a handwritten document that lets you in. You'll also need to carry your passport, and be accompanied in certain areas.

Life / Why does Poland need racial diversity? Opinions [67]

Nobel prize winner was ostracized

He still holds his Nobel Prize, so he hasn't been 'forced to give back his award'. Nor has he been 'ostracised from the community', nor did he 'state the obvious'...

The thing he was stripped of was an emeritus academic title from the 'Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory'.

Life / Murder / Homocide rates in Poland [18]

That would be a fatal road accident and would not go into the statistics of unintentional homicide.

In the UK it would be death by dangerous driving, due to the speeding.

the death of the Gdansk mayor became an intentional homicide once

It would be difficult for any lawyer to say it was unintentional given the killer's announcement over the microphone and the fact that he stabbed him several times.

Life / Murder / Homocide rates in Poland [18]

. In any case, 519 is still fairly low given Poland's population of nearly 40 million.

After EU entry, in some small towns the crime rates plummeted. Largely because a particular demographic who can sadly be a murderer or a victim of murder (young, male, poor. drinkers, unemployed etc) had moved elsewhere to seek gainful employment.

Stats are for murders in Poland. They include murders that happened in Poland regardless of the citizenship of the perpetrator or the victim. Poles abroad can and do sometimes get murdered or murder others.

Life / Murder / Homocide rates in Poland [18]

Now look up the amount of people killed on the roads vs those countries.

It used to have the worst road death rate in the EU. maybe that's changed, though I suspect it's still high on the table.

People used to excuse the high accident rates by saying it's the fault of the roads. No it bloody isn't; the worse the road is, the more carefully and safely you should drive...

News / Pawel Adamowicz, Gdansk mayor, dies after stabbing [354]

I'm right you are wrong. Let end it here. :)

If you think it'll 'end here' you'll be sorely disappointed. The trial is yet to happen, and given the thousands of people in Gdansk who liked and respected Mayor Adamowicz, it will be well-reported and much discussed...

when you turn some

No 'turning' needed. It's sadly clear cut. The fact that the political murderer is an 'ex-con' is neither here nor there. Did you see the pictures of the funeral? The city of Gdańsk really turned out en masse to grieve for a 20 year Mayor that they loved.
