Burial sites are paid. If the cemetery is owned by the city, you pay to the proper municipal institution. If owned by a local parish, you pay to the priest who takes care of the area.

Standard period of "leasing" the burial site is 20 years. Then you have to renew the contract and pay again. In big cities it can be 1800 PLN, in the countryside cemeteries 3 times less.

If you don`t pay, the tombstone is dismantled and offered to a new client.

About 10 years ago I took a photo of a certain site in our village cemetery which was "decorated" with a liquidation warning. The gravestone was in a very bad shape and it seems nobody paid coz the site was levelled and left unoccupied till today.
