History / Digital reconstruction of Warszawa - Miasto Ruin - rebuilding the destroyed Warsaw [31]

After the war, certain ruined quarters in central Warsaw were named Wild West by residents.

In the area of the "Wild West" there were ruins and rubble after war damage as well as temporarily renovated tenement houses supplemented with various types of barracks, workshops, shops, sheds, extensions, stables and dovecotes. . The housing was chaotic, the newly erected buildings were of various sizes, made of various materials. The characteristic elements were blind walls of tenement houses, which were previously adjacent to buildings demolished during or after the war, as well as labyrinths of backyards. This part of the city was famous for high crime, the presence of nonky-tonk bars and hideouts and was considered a dangerous place.

History / The restoration of Polish cities from WW2 destruction [123]

I like those mixed buildings - half old, half new.
A very good example is an office building in Warsaw whose bottom part was an element of the Jewish Ghetto wall during WW2. Hats off to new owners they kept the historical part.

"Myśl Polska"* (I know, I know... but I can't resist)...

We forgive you this weakness. But don`t do it too often coz you might soak with their horrendous ideas. :):)

I bet they really want to find something on him, but it takes time.

It still shows the incompetence of those guys at the helm - they can`t find enough evidence for 5 years!

History / Ghetto Uprising better known than Warsaw Uprising? [111]

anti-semitic sympathizers such as Dmowski, later Mosicki,

Mościcki probably wasn`t antisemitic at heart. But he acted like a puppet, being a very passive weak politician - so he closed an eye to the antisemitic campaign by his political buddies from the government and was silent when Jews were persecuted at universities etc.

President Duda is an active skier.
His political opponents say it is the best activity he can do in life. Pure malice on their part.

History / Ghetto Uprising better known than Warsaw Uprising? [111]

I've noticed that when I search for Polish history on-line oftentimes Jewish history comes up

Quite impossible. When I just tried to google out Polish history, I got Polish links, not Jewish.
My advice - change the browser for a more neutral one.

Apparently he was acquitted of those charges

The investigation is still running, he was released on bail in 2018. This well shows the inefficiency of PiS state - 5 years long proceedings.

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

there is nothing more to add.

Of course not. Vodka is the so called river topic in Poland.

Vodka which used to be produced before the WW2 comes back to Poland . E.g, Baczewski vodka - when I saw those labels a few years ago I had no idea where they were from. While Baczewski was the biggest producer of vodka in Poland in late 19th century and later on too.

After 1945, the descendants of Józef Adam Baczewski reactivated the company in Vienna and spirits are still produced there today under the JA Baczewski brand . The JA Baczewski brand returned to the Polish alcohol market, first in the 1990s as a product of Polmos Starogard Gdański under an Austrian license, and again in 2011 with specially designed original bottles (Polish designs differ from others released on European markets) in the shape of decanters and labels.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

Of course, the essay got maximum points. It wasn`t a long one, it isn`t necessary at the exam. But it was nicely arranged into paragraphs and used detailed references to literature which show that a student did read those books. That`s what the examiners check - if students read the books from the reading list. Or any books at all.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

At the Polish language final exam in the eighth grade, students of primary school, aged 15, are expected to write a composition, based on examples from Poliosh literature they did throughout 8 years or other books they have read on their own.

Here is an example of a topic from past years and an attempt by a final grade student

Curiosity - does it make life easier or harder? Write an essay justifying your position. Illustrate your arguments with examples from the literature.

Curiosity has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it is helpful, but it can also be dangerous. Generally it is considered a good character trait.

Curiosity guided the behavior of the main character of the book "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry , who came from the asteroid B612 and began his journey to various planets, including the Earth. The Little Prince watched the world through the eyes of a child, he did not understand the laws governing the world of adults. He was curious about the world, looking for answers to important questions about happiness, suffering, life and death. He learned how important love and friendship are in life, that they are values worth cherishing. Traveling made him mature and appreciate his rose. He understood that for him she is the only one in the world. Certainly, in his case curiosity made his future life easier coz at last he gained vital knowledge and experience.

Another character who displays curiosity is Andrzej Radek from "Syzyfowe Prace" by Żeromski. Radek is a son of poor peasants who don`t have enough money to educate him. But one day he is invited by the village teacher, Mr Paluśkiewicz, to look through some interesting books. It was like a complete shock to Radek - he hadn`t realised that books can offer so much fun. He was curious to read more and more, gradually improving his education and finally becoming a student of a local high school after which he could develop his career even further. If not for his curiosity, he would have remained a poor peasant all his life.

Curiosity, when used well, can guarantee us success and happiness in life. It can also help us solve the problems which nurture us, especially when we don`t know much about life. Andrzej Radek and Little Prince are good examples of characters who used their curiosity wisely and achieved a success in life.

News / Unfulfilled promises by PiS [559]

the Polish teachers

This recent scandal doesn`t concern teachers but certain foundations whose main activity is to help educate children. The problem is that most of the foundations which got donations are related to PiS or created by PiS political gangsters. And in some cases, their activity is far from educating children.

Excellent comment to a PiS politician by an opposition politician:

You bragged of being a party for millions, but you are a party of millionaires, because you create millionaires. You transfer money from a pile to a pile only for your own and you only think about your own interest.

News / Alexander Dugin is coming to Gdańsk! [17]

Mateusz Piskorski,

Am excellent example of old Targowica tradition - to unite with Russians against the interest of Poland, but for your own interest mainly. Simple speaking, a traitor who was already accused of being involved in Russian espionage in Poland.

In 2014, he supported the widely unrecognized referendum in Crimea , during which he led a group of "independent observers."

In May 2016, he was detained by officers of the Internal Security Agency . He was charged with espionage for Russian and Chinese civil intelligence, including participation in operational meetings with contacts and accepting operational tasks to promote Russian interests, for which he was allegedly paid; then, by court decision, he was temporarily arrested.

News / Unfulfilled promises by PiS [559]

Journalists of tvn24.pl described how money from the fund of the Minister of Education, Przemysław Czarnek, went to organizations close to Law and Justice.

Our forum PiS fans and defenders are keeping silent on the matter. Funny ostriches. Let me now gather documents and facts for our future debates with them when they rise their heads from the sand.

Here is a complete story.

tvn24.pl/polska/willa-plus-co-trzeba-wiedziec-o-publicznych-pieniadzach-rozdawanych-przez-ministra-przemyslawa-czarnka-6723659

One fragment about a certain PiS related institution whose bid had nothing to do with education of young people yet, they received a huge donation from PiS Minister

The call for proposals lasted from August 22 to September 22. Between 4 October and 3 November, meetings of the competition committee evaluating the applications were held. Wednesday's "Fakty" TVN showed how their opinion looked like. Arleta Zalewska looked at the subsidy for the Foundation for Common Affairs Megafon . The amount of the targeted subsidy requested for the purchase of real estate and equipment is PLN 4,800,000. However, as the material of "Facts" shows , the assessment of the expert examining the application was unequivocal.

"The educational offer proposed by the applicant does not focus on supporting the education of children and youth, but is addressed to people of all ages, which does not fit into the objectives of the project.""That is why the proposed investment largely deviates from the framework of this programme." "The applicant has no experience in conducting investments from public funds, and the requested investment amounts to a very high amount. Therefore, granting a subsidy could be considered contrary to the principle of rationality and economy when spending public funds" - quote the document "Facts".

Megafon, despite the crushing assessment of experts appointed by Minister Czarna, received PLN 4,500,000.

Thank you, PiS!

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

JD is actually considered cheap whiskey. Its mostly Rednecks that drink it

Thanks! Having read it, I started looking through my collection of whiskey which I got last year from grateful parents of students at the language school where I work. I didn`t find JD but one Jim Beam and sth unusual - Craft Whisky which is Scottish, Polish and American in origin.

The serial number on it is A 0885.

It seems the Polish producer buys crude distillate from Scotland and ages it in American oak barrels. Amasing.

The original, craft whiskey was created from the best combination of Scottish distillates and grain whiskeys, aged for three years in American oak. The secret of its recipe lies in the combination of the experience and talent of Polish artists and the tradition of Scottish masters, dating back to 1814.

I don`t like whisky so it is waiting for a visit from my wife`s relatives who are into boozing.

Life / Poland's Prison System Compared to America's [36]

In PiS` ruled Poland, prison guards used tortures on inmates.

prawo.pl/prawnicy-sady/tortury-w-barczewskim-wiezieniu,519615.html

The National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (KMPT) published a report on the visit to the Prison in Barczewo, which took place on October 17-20, 2022. As reported, the NMPT delegation had reasonable suspicions that acts of violence by some officers against including torture, inhuman and degrading treatment.

According to the Commissioner for Human Rights, a report was prepared after one of such visits. Based on conversations with prisoners in the facility, NMPT employees decided that it was necessary to notify the prosecutor's office because there was a suspicion of committing a crime.

The information provided by the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights shows that during the visit, representatives of the NMPT determined with high probability that the officers intimidate the prisoners, use repression, and use physical and verbal violence. Inmates are dragged out of their cells, brought to unmonitored rooms , where they are then beaten, insulted, intimidated, strangled and even waterboarded .

According to the information obtained, one of the prisoners allegedly suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of the beating . No ambulance was called, the officers independently resuscitated the prisoner, eventually restoring his life functions.

The Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights notified the prosecutor's office of the justified suspicion of committing a crime. In addition, due to the seriousness of the disclosed violations of prisoners' rights, the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture recommends a comprehensive inspection of the Prison in Barczewo by the District PS Inspectorate in Olsztyn.

Thank you, PiS!!!!

I will keep you notified about the developments in this case. I have already read that PIS Ministry of Justice is trying to sweep it under the carpet. I will give them some time to see if it is true.

Life / Poland's birthrate on the decline [480]

Welcome to PiS hypocrites` Poland. Here is a new scandal made by PiS which is just another brick in the wall discouraging women from having children.

Can you imagine that PIS` National Health Fund demands that doctors all over Poland return money for substitute milk for which they wrote prescriptions for children from the wrong age group? Milk was supposed to be for babies up to 18 months of age, and sometimes doctors also prescribed it for older children. One female doctor has to reimburse 160.000 PLN !

Comment under the article:

The last sentence is crucial: embryo, fetus, valid until birth. Then whether a sick child, a disabled child, or a child with special needs - even dietary ones - prolifers or their gov do not care about such kids.

Study / International Schools in Krakow - ISK and BISC? [8]

facilities qualifications for both schools for a friend of mine moving to

You mean the one who lives in your house? There might be a problem - most British school in Poland require the highest qualifications so only true language professionals are hired. Apart from that, they also require the greatest commitment and highest moral standards. I doubt your friend will pass the interview stage if he is granted one.
