Language / Foreigners speaking Polish - examples. [71]

A British historian who settled in Poland decades ago and specializes in Polish history, Mr Professor Norman Davies, speaks Polish.

Comments:

I have been waiting for such a meeting for a very long time. A beautiful moment. I admire Mr. Norman Davis for his commitment to Polish affairs, for his excellent Polish language, for everything he wrote, for modesty. A great man. .

The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life to escape the snare of death.

History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [503]

BTW - why was there an economic crisis at the time?

Communists took huge loans from Western banks and govs in 1970s to modernise the industry. They hoped they would be able to pay off the credits with manufactured goods. Unfortunately, Western clients weren`t so eager to buy communist stuff and the loans remained unpaid. Soon the cost of servicing the debt was higher than the Polish annual export to hard currency countries. That meant Poland wasn`t able to repay its old debts and interest and had to take new loans.

In 1982 the Polish national debt was 42 billion $, while the annual export amounted to about 12 billion. Hopeless situation. We were cooked. I remember one of our uni teachers tried to get the message across to us but we didn`t believe her - we were so optimistic. The privilige of the youth.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

When rightist PiS came to power in 2015, I naively hoped they would get rid of some leftist regulations which had been introduced by the previous government. Of course, they didn`t do it and if they changed anything, it was for worse, not better. it is amassing how those rightist morons copy idiotic stuff from leftist Europe when it comes to education. :(:(:(:(

What regulations I don`t like? E.g. in the past a student who didn`t bring his/her home assignment to class usually got an F ( students could avoid it by taking "unprepared" option whose number was limited). Today, it is illegal coz students can be assessed only through actual performance. The lack of performance is not a reason to give an F.

In practice it means that a lot of teachers stopped assigning any homework to avoid confrontation and arguments in class.
In my case, most students still do it but there are stubborn ones who don`t and then we waste a lot of time when they try to do it in class. Those brilliant ones usually do well but the example they set to the rest of the group is demoralising.

In practice it means that a lot of teachers stopped assigning any homework to avoid confrontation and arguments in class.

Which is really bad coz it has been scientifically proven that students need additional contact with the taught material out of class. It is especially important in case of English which is not only crucial in job hunting etc but also is chosen by most students as a foreign language at final exams at the age of 15 and 19.

USA, Canada / Cigarettes reach nine dollars a pack in New York [109]

now a pack of Marlboro Reds (the only cigarettes for real men) in NYC costs $16-18.

Amasing! Much cheaper in Poland: about 3.5$.

I used to enjoy smoking and occasionally have the odd one even now

Yes, I also had a weakness for smoking still about 15 years ago - I did it on summer holidays, when I was completely devoid of worries, and the family were already asleep, I sat in front of the cabin and lit a cigarillo at night.

Today it is out of the question coz cig smoke chokes me.

Off-Topic / Russian Views On Poland and Vice Versa [414]

the soul of a Russian, if not everyone, then almost everyone, is consumed with the spirit

The words about the Russian soul being consumed with spirit can be true. Many people in the West have always been intrigued by the "mysterious unpredictable Russian soul" and even admired it as a thrilling element of the overall Russian culture. There is nothing mysterious in it - people in Russia regularly act out of control coz they drink too much vodka which damages their brains. Foetuses already drink vodka with their expectant mothers. Simple.

News / Pawel Adamowicz, Gdansk mayor, dies after stabbing [354]

The murderer was sentenced at last. After 4 years. This is PiS judiciary in practice.

He got life, with obligatory 40 years before asking for parole.

PIS media and politicians had fueled the hate campaign which ended with the tragedy. Tfu!!

which is masculine and okey as long as it is controlled).

Yes, the biggest problem is aggression tends to get out of control easily and things escalate beyond all limits. That is why there are a few fatal incidents resulting from aggressive football fans feuds each year.

promotes feminism and matriarchy.

Yes, you should adopt them as soon as possible, it will spare you a lot of frustration in life. We can see that you are deeply troubled. :):):)

News / R. Trzaskowski, current mayor of Warsaw, future President of Poland [354]

a 'familok' if you know what 'familok' is)

Good you revealed this info coz it helped us see you as a normal person. So far I have imagined you were a PiS official who sucks huge sums from boards of a few state companies, together with your family - wife, uncle, aunt, grandpa etc. - all of them employed at lucrative positions through PiS connections. :):):)

to use quince when lemons weren't in the shops.

Yes, lemons were scarce during the most severe crisis of 1981 so my mum got a fashionable geranium - quite a lot of people kept them.

However, she wasn`t so enthusiastic after all and decided to buy lemons at the open air markets.

PS.
BTW - why was there an economic crisis at the time?

Cut down on this aggression. It is completely unnecessary - Joker revealed that he is just having an innocent act with you. So stop overreacting.

yet they gobble the TVN propaganda

Of course it is wrong coz in your opinion they should gobble down PiSTV propaganda. :):):)

hate PiS - think of turkeys voting for Christmas

Don`t be silly. Smart people see that PiS is robbing them in broad daylight and all their anti inflation benefits contribute to an even higher inflation.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

the PiS Minister of Justice and General Attorney is parading with a gun behind his belt.

That azholish behavious has only two explanations in my opinion:
1 the guy doesn`t trust his security personnel
2 the guy needs such displays to boost his ego.

Anything else??

History / Karol Wojtyla, the man who become a pope (video) [58]

Defence 1:

Defence 2

Fanatic soccer fans put this banner on display during a recent match. It is curious coz in 2005 when the Pope died the main rivaling fan groups declared an armistice on their silly conflicts. They broke it a few months later and resumed fighting in stadiums and streets. :):):)

Hands off JP2!!!

Language / Is Polish easy to learn? [10]

Do you think Polish is hard to learn?

Yes! It is a real challenge and only intelligent people can fully master it.

What's the hardest thing about it?

Chrząszcze, żuczki, dżdżownice and other bugs and worms

it's well worth the effort

Of course. Trying to get the knack of Polish, you will increase your intelligence by 20% at least.

Life / The Legacy of Polish Poster design [36]

The one with the kid is tending towards kitsch.

That is why Polish cartoonists made a parody of that poster - in early 1980s there was a series of hijacks of LOT planes to West Berlin. The spoof poster showed a kid carrying a bomb and pretending to fly to Tempelhoff airport. .

Life / Paintings of artists from Poland? [192]

Yes and the slogan on the poster makes it even worse, I think

Here`s even a more sexist poster. Outrageous. Fekking male chauvinist swine made and propagated it.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

...or be unarmed and die the first a-hole invades your house.

Oh my God, you just reminded me those azholes try to invade my house every day. Yesterday it was a fly and two days ago - a field mouse. hahahaha

A good example why rightist Poles who demand free access to guns shouldn`t get it. Here, the PiS Minister of Justice and General Attorney is parading with a gun behind his belt. He was lucky not to shoot one of his buttocks off. If he wore that gun in front, he could shoot off his balls. hahahahaha

So unbelievably amassing...... and those people demand more guns! Can you imagine???
God forbid......

History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [503]

In another thread we talked about geraniums and pelargonias.
A little riddle from communist times: why did my parents, or my mum exactly coz dad didn`t care much, kept geraniums on the window sill in early 1980s?
