Language / Ideas of messianism of Adam Mickiewicz - more info needed [21]

By calling Lithuania his "Fatherland" Mickiewicz was referring to a region of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth he loved. Let us not forget that Mickiewicz wrote his masterpieces in Polish and that he was a Polish patriot as he died in Turkey raising Polish forces to fight against the Russians in the Crimean War in 1855.

History / Poland's January Uprisings of 1863 [86]

The January Uprising was the longest Lithuanian and Polish uprising against the Russian Empire: it began January 22, 1863, and the last insurgents were not captured until 1865. It started as a spontaneous protest by young Poles against conscription into the Russian Army.

History / Poland's January Uprisings of 1863 [86]

Patrycja ,

for example what did the Warsaw uprising accomplish? nothing

The Polish troops resisted the German-led forces until October 2 (63 days in total). Losses on the Polish side amounted to 18,000 soldiers killed, 25,000 wounded and over 250,000 civilians killed, mostly in mass executions conducted by advancing German troops. Casualties on the German side amounted to over 17,000 soldiers killed and 9,000 wounded. During the urban combat—and after the end of hostilities, when German forces acting on Hitler's orders burned the city systematically, block after block—an estimated 85% of the city was destroyed.

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

Arien wrote, "My salary: (If I manage to work a whole year! ) 20.000 € a year.:)
.. it's impossible to have a mortgage! So what do I do? I rent a cheaper appartment and throw a party untill I do get a chance to improve my situation." :)

Arien if you can't afford the house because you don't make enough $$$ then work 60-70 hours a week. save $$$ for the downpayment. :)

Arien,

You see Poles work alot harder and longer then Americans or Brits do. :)

Poles are hungry for both money $$$ and power.

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

we Polish people like misery:) we celebrate every failed National Uprising and battle.

we don't like to smile , if you smile too much in Poland then something is wrong with you.

we Polish people are very jealous if our neighbour is doing better financially than us.
There is a Polish joke about a three farmers. the Jewish farmer is rich and has 3 cows while his neighbours the German and Polish farmers are poor and don't have any cows.

Each night before going to bed the German prays "God may I one day have the money to buy a cow"

while the Pole prays " God may the Jew's 3 cows die ":)

The most horrible thing is that Poles mistreat their countrymen abroad. :)
