History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

@berni23

If you still believe Poland is a eastern european country after this information then there is no hope for you ;)

Central Europe as a region connected to the Western civilisation for a very long time, including countries like the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Holy Roman Empire, later German Empire and the Habsburg Monarchy, the Kingdom of Hungary and Bohemia. Central Europe understood in this way borders on Russia and the South-Eastern Europe, but the exact frontier of the region is difficult to determine.

History / Destructions of Poland thoughout centuries [55]

Have swedish film-makers or novelists ever tackled the Deluge?

No, they actually see the "Deluge" as a good thing from their perspective.

Is it well known to today's Swedish popular culture?

Nope.

History / Destructions of Poland thoughout centuries [55]

Aristocracy and gentry in the Polish part of the Commonwealth were all Polish. Not Jewish, not Russian, not German, not fekking Martian. They were Polish.

Excuse me?

They greatly contributed to Poland`s fall.

They also contributed to Poland's rise.

Chocim Castle

Noone of these are located in Poland today, but they were built by and for Poles during the PLC era.

David, sorry, they don`t. If you want, start a new thread titled Palaces of Poland. There are many of them.

You can do that, i'm to lazy ;)

The reason i asked is because Poland and later on The Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth kinda abandoned the idea of building castles to protect important trade routes etc..

Since the PLC govement was kinda decentralized, it was more up to the Polish nobles aka Szlachta to build up the defences in the country. The most common defensive structures became the Palazzo in fortezza (fortified palace)

Krzyztopor

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [859]

The president was not the only one dying in that crash.

You should also take into consideration that the twins were very anti-russian.

Except all of those things had a political motive. What use would killing a lame duck President be who was going to lose badly in the Presidential election?

Could have something to do with the politics maybe?

And please skip the "duck" thing. Not even fun to be honest.

Because I think it's insulting to the dead to keep on mentioning all these conspiracy theories.

That just made my day!

So we should not try to find out why they died and take the russians for their word? just like Katyn?

News / Should Poland leave the EU institution? [147]

Poland should stay, but it should relax and stepp down from the international politics for 20-30 years or so.

The czechs are a good example. They are quite and they still enjoy economical growth.

Right now Poland is growing to fast in the Political arena and is only pissing other countires of by its succes story.

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1410]

There has been a significant increase in the number of infants with Flat Head Syndrome in recent years.

There is no such thing as a "flat head Syndrome".

Ever been to France, Germany or Italy? If you've been there you probably have noticed that like 50% of the people there got the "Flat head syndrome".

It's just the way it is.

Life / Why Polish Diminutives/Nicknames are so popular? [14]

Nowhere in the world is it so popular to have Diminutives/Nicknames like in Poland, but why?

Some names can get a nickname that is so far away from the original name as it can be.

An extreme example must be the diminutive of Alexandra that will be nicknamed into "Ola".

Some examples:

Michal: Misiek, Misieczek.

Barbara: Basia, Basiulka, Basienieczka.

Janina: Janka, Nina, Janeczka.

Katarzyna: Kasia, Kasiulka, Kasiuneczka.

Piotr: Piotrek, Piotrusiek.

And lets not get into the Extreme Petnaming on people like "żabka, córeczka, kotek, ptaszeczek"

WHY????

My family calls me or well called me kogutek untill i got so mad that they didn't dare to call me that again haha, depressing... ;)

Now it's Pericles, i guess i can live with that...

What is your family calling you?

History / So called "inconvenient parts" of Polish history - what do you think? [157]

Interesting that you don't use his full name. Would that be because you also know that Czesław is not a Jewish name and don't want people to notice that? He was a Polish Catholic (see here for details).

WOW seriously dude you just linked the details from a nazi forum, idiot.

Heck, even Serbs and Croats are dreadful for this. Maybe it's just a Slavic thing?

Maybe you should just stfu?

I'm tired of your trolling on this forum.

Why don't you just stfu or actually contribute something to this forum? All you do is trying to make Poland look bad and call all "American-Poles" non Poles or like you usually say "Dumb Pollacks" just so you can feel good about your miserable life.

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [221]

Who shall go first?

In my opinion, the creators and supporters of Targowica Confederacy in 18 century.

Today we can call them for traitors.

But if we gonna see it from their perspective we will have to try to understand why they did it.

The reformers wanted to reform the whole countrys system. They wanted to abolish the serf system enforce new taxes and give more power to the people.

And the Targowica Confederacy "the conservative party" just wanted to have status quo ante which means "same as before".

How they dealt with it is can today seem like stupid but remember that those magnates could never guess that their "ally" mother Russia would choose to take a large part of the country as a war booty. Actually i dont even think the Russians knew it before it happend. They just cease the moment, so did Austria and Prussia.

News / Poland reveals its new super car. [56]

Then again, what could realistically have been expected?

An Leopard Roadster?

Poland's forte has never been cars.

Ever heard of Syrena Sport? One of the best sport cars designed in the 50's.

Or the CWS T-1 Torpedo in the 20's?

Or the PZInż 403 Lux-Sport that would have been produced if i wasnt for the ww2.

What engine does this Polish supercar have in it....?

6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine

History / Were Nobles during Commonwealth constituting the Nation of Poland? [37]

Where they a separate race as they claimed?

No. They just romanticide their past and called themselfs Sarmatians, anyway it was more of a lifestyle.

The Sweds romanticide that they were the decendants of the Goths since their name sound similar to their ancestors the "Geats"

Where they constituting a body of citizens, not unlike those of the Romans of old?

Yes they were the backbone of the P-L Commonwealth.

Maybe only nobles were Poles and the others were only Mazurian, Ruthenian,Zmudzian and the like?

The nobles in P-L were all equal... Atleast in paper.

I'm sure you prefer the national ukrainian dress of the time:

Made my night thanks!

In case of Commonwealth it was their rights, which made them standing out not only from other social group but from other nobles in Europe and the world. They had a rights not unlike Roman citizens of old, no matter poor or rich, every noble enjoyed the same rights. Freedom breeds a different kind of men.

On paper yes. But if a lets say Mr Potocki wanted the tiny little village of the poor Mr Piotrowski he took it by sword, and then bribed his way out of the court.

I would put the blame on the foreign origin of elected monarchs. They had no understanding of Polish constitution nor the will to work according to the guidelines of the law in Poland,

That's the reason why the Szlachta wanted foreign monarchs. Why have strong king with power that will make you his puppet while you can have a weak king that will be your puppet?

History / Where did the power of Poland vanish to, since... let`s say, some 300 years ago? [180]

Who opposed Koszcziuzko's reforms and liberation of the serfs - and sided with the Russians? The church and the aristocracy.

Not that many actually. The problem was that the ones who opposed held some key areas like one of the Lubomirski members that was supposed to hand out rifles, cloths and gun powder. Instead he blew up the arsenal.*

Those kinda people messed up the uprising and made sure that the logistic would not work as it should have done.
