News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

Did Mr MacShane deliberately used Polish "Pan" Mularczyk instead

Dr MacShane speaks Polish as well as both English and French and certainly knows how to choose words carefully in all three languages.

His name as a child, by the way, was Josef Denis Matyjaszek.

Real Estate / How much is rent in Katowice? [15]

I guess that has already changed.

I suspect so too, espcially that nice uphill are behind the station with the 1920s buildings.

When I was still renting my house (divided into 2 apartments), it was a hobby.

Me too. It was just my home that I planned to return to one day.

Now the situation with landlordism and buy-to-letism has become absurd and toxic, with individuals and companies exploiting society's assets (for that is what housing is) for profit. I read about the disturbing situation in Berlin and hope the city council there intervene.

Off-Topic / What's your connection with Poland? Penpals. [595]

It seems to me that the word "resident" only refers to a temporary stay in a place

In the UK, it tends to imply residence for tax purposes, banking, voting etc.

Off-Topic / Ukrainian language [50]

When it comes to vocabulary, it is fifty fifty.

There's a big difference between Ukrainian dialects. Listening to people from Lviv, I can understand 100%. due to similarity with Polish. Kyiv people? Maybe 50 or 60%

Why did I decide to adopt that one?

The more the merrier? Company for the other two? He needed a home and you couldn't say no?

Real Estate / Would you rent from me? [24]

Best to disregard the above post.

Atch, btw, is right about evictions where there is a minor in the home.

Perhaps check out some of 'cargo pants' other posts here and decide for yourself on his credibility.

History / November 11th, what does it mean to you? [24]

PiS propaganda

Yep.

A certain political tendency that exists in most if not all countries trumpets loudly that things ain't what they used to be, that the town/country/world is going to hell in a handcart and that all that is sacred is disrespected by the younger generation.

Cobblers of course, but it gets a result from its intended audience.

Real Estate / Would you rent from me? [24]

I would like to become a landlord in Poland

Why not take part in a workers' cooperative or a not-for-profit housing enterprise?

News / Future of Polish-Ukrainian relations [669]

Ebonics,

Easy enough to understand.

Surzhyk is removed from Russian.

It isn't a dialect of that language.

And its death knell started to sound the day Vladolf Putler invaded.

Surzhyk is a pidgin version of Russian?

It isn't of course.

It's a variant of Ukrainian corrupted by influences from a hostile neighbour.

Surzhyk is what illiterates speak

Oddly enough, the person I hear speaking it most has a doctorate. It is (or was) the language of the urban proletariat (and no shame in that) however people are obviously moving away from it towards purer Ukrainian since it is increasingly seen as tainted.

History / November 11th, what does it mean to you? [24]

Yet I get the feeling that younger Poles don't feel it so much

I was out and about on 11/11 in Warsaw. Like most people from Western Europe, I certainly don't celebrate or party on that sad of reflection and remembrance of The Fallen, however here in Central/Eastern Europe the day is regarded differently and I saw a lot of young people returning from the Independence parade which always has large crowds.

Even russian speaking Ukrainians want

UK, Ireland / Would life in the UK be very hard for a 17 yr old Polish girl? Advice needed please [33]

trickle compared to the deluge before

Of course, since so many came before. About 900,000 and since then, the Polish economy has improved and there's far less unemployment in PL and far fewer reasons to move to the islands.

Plus of course people who were in their 40s when they moved there in 2004/5 are now thinking about retiring and returning home as was always their plan.

this funny dance is performed. What exactly?

The dance to a maxillofacial surgeon's waiting room.

Sorry Paw, I'm sure the folks in the photos are all really nice but they need to sort out the facial problems; maybe dermatology, but they've all got an extreme case of something.

Life / Funeral Traditions in Poland [68]

hire a musician/band for the funera

Sounds similar to the Last Post, very seasonal for this time of year when we remember the Fallen.

I attended a funeral in Warsaw where they had a trumpeter. He played Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World".

his family house - a case in which his son in law

You may well be right.

He's quite a good bridge player though. I've not partnered him since he plays club based systems (as is usual in PL) and like most people from English-speaking countries I play ACOL however he is (or used to be) not bad at all.

he is a total nutter!!!

Mad as a box of frogs.

Genealogy / Is "Lubrant" a Polish last name? [7]

Lubran

There are certainly people called that in Poland, most of them around Wloclawek and Kunice.

As the link suggests, it may be a variant spelling of another name.

but I'll miss that crazy b@str@d when he's gone....

Do you remember those stickers that his deranged fanboys used to put everywhere around election time?

One had a picture of a gallows on and the other had a slogan that translated as "no scaredy-cats in the army".

If you think those eyes are 'evil', then you have never seen ones that actually are evil.

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

the right and duty to choose the party that got the largest amount of votes

This is true, however Poland of course has the absolutorium vote which is a hurdle for anyone trying to form a coalition government.
