Before the Polish-Lithuanian union that turned our attention east, Poland was pretty much integrated into catholic Europe. We were not a core country, like the Kingdom of France, but had a status similar to kingdoms of Scandinavia. Grand Duchy of Lithuania received western Christianity via Poland. Our first royal family, the Piasts had strong dynastic ties with Sweden, Norway and the Germanic duchies, Jagiellonians on the other hand with Czech and Hungarian kingdoms,and later also with Habsburgs.


Hungary is too butthurt towards virtually every neighbor (and doesn't conceal the fact it wants to steal their lands). Even Czechs and Slovaks were unable to closely cooperate after 1989 and had to divorce in 1993. Central European block is an unrealistic illusion. Even our former ruling party, Law and Justice, which loved to indulge in such fantasies, didn't dare to propose leaving the EU for some unclear central European alternative. They knew the Polish people would swiftly end them like the Ukrainians ended Janukovych's regime.

The tragedy was the Commonwealth fell the moment it started to fix its government, overcome the corruption of the regime - the reformer faction that brought the Consistution of 3rd May 1791 proved to be too weak to defend it against the imperial neighbours. If the Constitution survived many aspects of public life - including the exploitation of peasants and underdevelopment of cities - would have to change. Especially with the revolution happening in France.

Alas, we lost our chance and had to wait another 123 years until another opportunity would arise.

At the beginning of the war, how did you anticipate it would unfold? I assumed that Russia would quickly conquer Ukraine, besiege Kyiv, and despite militarily defeating Ukraine, they would encounter a huge problem establishing a pro-Russian government or achieving full-blown annexation. Dozens of millions of Ukrainians would flee to the west, with Poland and the Baltic states becoming full of extremely long refugee camps. Most of the remaining population would engage in guerrilla warfare at this moment. They would make Russian occupation very costly but wouldn't be able to defeat Russia.

If someone had said that, despite adopting mobilizations, Russia using thermobaric weapons, hypersonic missiles, and only avoiding nukes due to the fear of the end of the NPT, which is not in the interest of other nuclear-armed countries, they would only conquer about 15% of Ukrainian territory even after Ukraine stopped receiving US aid for months, I would call that person crazy optimistic.

In 1989 thinking in terms of conspiracy theories was as popular as today, so I'm sure some cynical people commented "ah, those Poles and their desire for freedom! How naive! Poland is just a fool tool for some very different designs!"

But the fact is, today we're more free and prosperous than we've ever been before 1989. If some nefarious plans were realised thanks to us reclaiming independence, so be it. If somebody's happiness depended on our subjugatjon, fu*ck them with a sharp stick. We don't owe this fu*cks a thing.
