History / Pol-Shorpy Photo Thread [950]

Pol-Shorpy Photo Thread
Excellent thread but bears a silly name which I can never remember and lose a lot of time looking for it when I want to post sth coz I always try to find Sharp instead of Shorpy. Torq, can you assign your threads more practical names for the pure convenience of elderly posters like me?

I just read that
The Germans sentenced a 99-year-old woman. She was a secretary at the Stutthof concentration camp

A 99-year-old German employee of the former KL Stutthof camp was found guilty of aiding and abetting the deaths of over 9,000 people. The defense demanded the acquittal of Irmgard F. The court found that the woman had acted voluntarily. The sentence of two years' imprisonment was upheld.

AmaSSing!

Let me remind you that the last public execution in Poland concerned German workers of the Stutthof camp. Thousands of spectators came to see it. A show like in the Middle Ages! AmaSSing!

This secretary sentenced today was so fekking lucky.hahahaha

It took place in Gdańsk in 1946.

Life / The climate for gardening in Poland [340]

I am a little obsessed in the orchard, I must say. I mean I maintain those fruit plants as trees even when they have a natural tendency to grow as bush/shrub. My obsession costs me time spent twice or thrice a year on pruning shoots on the ground level.

Hazelnut trees, not shrubs. We have 3 now. Initially, it was 1 and I was perplexed why it didn`t have any nuts for a few years. Later I read about cross pollinating.

Life / The climate for gardening in Poland [340]

This year I eventually was lucky to see first:
paper apple

Here it is. I didn`t notice it at first coz it was hidden in this greenery. Paper apples were the fruit of my childhood in 1970s - they were very popular then. Strangely, they ceased to. Now they are advertised as vintage apple trees by seedling growers.

News / Dirty deeds of foreign guys in Poland [128]

A 35-year-old Ukrainian man committed numerous thefts and other crimes and misdemeanors in Poland, for which he was expelled from the country. He was taken into the hands of officers of the Border Guard station in Bielsko-Biała, who forcibly escorted him to the border with Ukraine. The man was banned from entering Poland and the Schengen area for five years.

News / Is NORD STREAM dangerous for Poland's natural enviroment? [540]

Are those Scholz Germans such idiots, really???

The American daily adds that at the end of last week, the Polish prosecutor's office sent a letter to Germany in which it informed that the wanted man had left our country. In connection with this, it was supposed to ask for clarification as to whether German investigators were still interested in searching his apartment in Pruszków.

According to a person familiar with the matter, the Germans perceived the letter as "an additional insult to the insult already inflicted."

incredible damaging for Ukraine down the line.

Yes, in Scholz Germany, it might. Scholz Germans have already declared they are going to reduce the Ukrainian aid fund. By half or more. Dupki dzwonce.

History / Recommended Poland's history books [257]

In my effort to learn Polish history

Yes, I have always wanted to say how impressed we are by your efforts but my forgetfulness is really a nuisance. You remind me of myself, I have also always been a maniacal devourer of everything concerning Poland`s history. I started in the second grade elementary school when I robbed my elder sister of her history book for grade 5. :):):)

News / Is NORD STREAM dangerous for Poland's natural enviroment? [540]

Amasing facts are surfacing about German Polish clash over Nord Stream destruction.

German prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian diving instructor, suspecting him of attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines in 2022. . The man was reportedly living in Pruszków recently. However, Polish prosecutors have reported that the wanted Volodymyr Z. already left the territory of our country.

Now, The Wall Street Journal reveals that the prosecutor's office did not execute the arrest warrant. First, it found an error in the German application (Germany denied its existence), and then informed that the Internal Security Agency would handle the case.

The ambiguous attitude of the investigators was supposed to have worried the German authorities, who decided to intervene in this matter in Poland "at the very top," The occasion for this was supposed to be Polish-German government consultations at the beginning of July. The WSJ source claims that during these talks the Germans asked their Polish colleagues to ensure the execution of the arrest warrant. The Poles allegedly refused.

Moreover, a senior Polish official is said to have told a German colleague in a private conversation that any suspect who may have played a role in the destruction of the oil pipelines deserved a medal, not arrest.

hahahahahaha Are those Scholz Germans such idiots, really???

Off-Topic / Pop A Cork - Wine [440]

Enjoy.

That is why I make my own fruit wine - just fruit, spring water and sugar. And wine yeast, of course.
Now when I recall all kinds I have ever made, the best is black currant wine.

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

When violent crime in "America" stops

The chance that in a bout of dementia you shoot your wife thinking she is an intruder is higher than the chance of being actually in a dangerous situation.

Most guns used in criminal acts were obtained illegaly through home invasion or other theft.

Exactly. So when people don`t have guns, thieves will have nothing to steal.

People commit those crimes, not the guns.

Yes, known fact, the same with knives etc. However, killing a person with a gun is much easier than with a knife. that is why gun killings run in thousands in the US while knife stabbings come by tens in Europe.

Travel / Fishing in Poland - where to go, what to catch? [81]

Expense is my last worry in this case. I am more worried by its depletion in seas. The species is closing on a dangerous level of extinction. But I can`t resist coz it is my comfort food which helps me dissipate depressive moods.

Food / Traditionally-Polish salads, help needed [49]

Members of the family make different salads according to their taste buds` needs.

First, green salad with whatever could be found in the fields: lettuce, kohlrabi, collard, spring onion stems and patison zucchini.
Next, tomato (two kinds) salad with chopped onion:

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1070]

Tragic news from Switzerland - a Polish immigrant who worked as a caretaker in an apartment block was shot dead by a Swiss resident who didn`t like being told off for his noisy behaviour at night.

Another sad news - 20% young males in Poland support free access to guns. Imbeciles! They don`t realise that many of them will die after being shot by crazies or simply furious attackers, like in Switzerland.

History / What do Poles owe to Romanians? [16]

Thousands of the Polish army personnel crossed the Polish Romanian border

Here is a nice article throwing some light on their adventures.

ciekawostkihistoryczne.pl/2012/05/31/polak-potrafi-jak-polscy-piloci-uciekali-z-rumunskiej-niewoli/

The first group escaped from the camp in a very simple way. They pulled a large barrel on wheels, normally used for transporting water, out of the shed, loaded their belongings into it and dragged it, shouting in Romanian:

- Apa! [i.e. water - author's note]

The guard, convinced that they were going for water, opened the gate and let the whole group out. Fifteen minutes later, a large group of soldiers marched out of the camp, carrying in their backpacks boards from a building that had been specially dismantled for this purpose. They were led by a colleague dressed in the uniform of a Romanian guard. And the guard let them out without any problems.

History / What do Poles owe to Romanians? [16]

Yes, that`s what I primarily had in mind while starting the thread. Thousands of the Polish army personnel crossed the Polish Romanian border when the situation became hopeless after two nasty allies, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, partitioned Poland.
Those escapees were officially interned by the Romanian authorities but later on gradually, one by one, they were allowed to leave their internment camps and go West or in some cases return to Poland. Romanians did it out of friendship or bribes.
Whenever I read a story of a famous soldier who fought in the Western Front, I regularly ran into this info: escaped from the camp in Romania and moved to France/Britain to carry on fighting.

We talked about fig trees several times. So, yes, since 2015, this year it has been the second time when they perished during winter with minus 20 temps for more than a week.
I cut down all the dead stems and now am going to grow them in one trunk version which will be easier to protect against frost.

News / Low Priced Ukraine Blueberries have exporters routing around Poland [17]

It seems Polish farmers will forever complain about cheap produce from Ukraine

Similarly, Western farmers complained in the same manner when Poland gained access to the EU. Today we are a major producer of good food for all Europe together with Western producers and everybody is happy. The times of trouble with Ukraine will also pass into oblivion one day. Be optimistically patient.

Are you going to fight in the Kursk region???

That's all.

Still much more than me. I don`t remember when I saw sth from Czechia.

But I do remember they produced awful chocolate in 1970s. Polish chocolate was delicatessen in comparison.

News / Low Priced Ukraine Blueberries have exporters routing around Poland [17]

However, farmers voted PiS and PiS pissed on them at the end anyway

Exactly. It seems Polish farmers will forever complain about cheap produce from Ukraine and when Russia divides into 10 seperate states, other sources, too. Last year it was grain, 3 months ago - honey, now soft fruit.

Growers from eastern Poland are raising the alarm that raspberry prices at purchases have fallen again to levels that make harvesting them unprofitable. Fruit growers claim that we are dealing with market destabilization due to frozen food shipments coming to us from Ukraine. They are demanding intervention.
