News / Germany After the EU and the Russian Scenario - future of the European Union and Poland [310]

EVERYBODY KNEW THEY WERE LYING!

The Greeks called it "creative accounting", if I recall correctly. Not really lying, but shuffling money around to make the significant economic data look good.

The architects of the Euro should be in prison for economic malfeasance.

Lock up the French then. The Germans certainly didn't want it as they were more than happy with their Deutsch Mark, but they had to pay a price for the reunification. I remember vividly how the French media were celebrating a new "Versailles" after Germany agreed because the French somehow got access to the reserves of the German central bank after that (can't remember how exactly anymore).

News / Germany After the EU and the Russian Scenario - future of the European Union and Poland [310]

Only 5 of the NATO countries pay their fair share.

"Fair" is relative. The USA has global ambitions and therefore a much larger military budget than anybody else. So if we decide to spend 3.3% or more of our GDP on the military, that's our own stupidity. Others don't have to follow. The 2% GDP mentioned earlier is not even binding. It's an objective.

Who's been covering their A$$ since the1950`s?

The American troops in Germany were part of an occupation force, remember? Even if the occupation officially ended in 1954, it's no secret that American, French and British forces were not only there to protect Germany from the Russians, but also to protect themselves from the Germans.

you better starting paying your NATO bill or be kicked out

The US pays 22% of the operating budget of NATO, Germany pays 15%. The 2% of GDP that was agreed upon has nothing to do with the NATO budget. Each member is supposed to spend that cash on its own military by 2024 (and not 2017!!!). There are no dues to NATO or the US, as tRump tries to spin it.

News / Germany After the EU and the Russian Scenario - future of the European Union and Poland [310]

since Merkel's attacks on Greece

Did she send her Stukas and paratroopers again, that naughty woman? :)

With Germany assuming it's rightful place as the most hated country in Europe

Germany would think twice and even trice before tries open war

Oh no, it's 1939 all over again. The sky is falling. LOL!

Germany is listed as one of the top 25 most reputable countries, and its military is so weak (on purpose, by the way) that they couldn't even invade Vatican City. You need to chill, folks.

Genealogy / Common surnames in Poland NOT of Polish origin ? [87]

@Chemikiem

Sorry, forgot. Did you see that a man named Teodor Labenski was looking for the Chaskiel Froudist listed in the Yad Vashem record I linked above? Maybe he thought that Chaskiel was killed in the Holocaust when he actually survived. Another relative?

Try this one, and then click on the English flag. Their database seems to change the page ID automatically with every visit:

There are no surviving passenger listings for Bremen

Oh, there are: deutsche-auswanderer-datenbank.de/index.php?id=535&L=1

Unless you have the opportunity to visit the museum in Bremerhaven, you will have to pay for the research. Shouldn't be too much, though.

happy with canabis use

You're happy with vodka use and getting drunk as a skunk five times a week. Paranoid much? LOL!

when I'm in the Netherlands, I see plenty of people showing Polish ID cards when buying

If you think about it, there's really no need to legalize in Poland. Just hop on the car and buy some dope in Berlin or Amsterdam, where it's either legal or tolerated. One of the positive aspects of Schengen.

Genealogy / Common surnames in Poland NOT of Polish origin ? [87]

Could it be that there was a typo in the refugee listing of the Vilna archive and the maiden name of Mirjam-Margarette was Kronenberg or Kronberg(er), or that her first name was actually Miriam?

Here's one Miriam Korenberg (and there's another one mentioned in the record):

Can you tell as a little bit more about your parents? Where did they live in Poland? Warsaw? Were they Jewish, catholic or protestant? That's very important if you want to ever find your ancestors.

Genealogy / Common surnames in Poland NOT of Polish origin ? [87]

Nothing at all comes up for that surname on familysearch.org or other sites.

There's a marriage record from Cuyahoga, Ohio, which lists a Rebecca Froudist:

Dorota,

google for "Froudist" genealogy or "Froudist" Poland . There's a whole bunch of hits showing up - lots from the UK and Australia, it seems.

This one looks interesting, too (5 Froudist on that list):

Life / Poland's Prison System Compared to America's [36]

If you start looking at murder rates per capita America is ranked at number 108 out of 218 countries

That was not the point, Dolnoslask. The question was whether the death penalty is deterrent enough to keep people from killing each other or not, and it clearly isn't. Regarding the murder rate: you should compare the USA to other first world countries, not to some crime infested dump in South America, Africa or Asia. Although, at the moment the country's murder rate is similar to Kyrgyzstan's, Burundi's or Iran's - which should tell you something.

Life / Poland's Prison System Compared to America's [36]

If they were dead innocent others would still be alive.

Well, that comes with the death penalty, doesn't it? What I meant is something else: is the death penalty really a deterrence for someone who is about to kill another person? The answer is no, as the murder rate in the USA clearly shows.

Rehabilitation is a farce.

Has the death penalty ever prevented a murder? Is the Three Strikes Law really working in states like California? Nope.

Travel / Flying from USA to Poland in June - Will Visa now be required??? [31]

I do not see why you would say that.

Don't bother, FlyingOver. Johnny Reb and his alter ego Joker are trolling. They cannot grasp that there are almost a million Americans living in Europe now; and quite a few of them in Poland.

News / Poles call for EU reforms. [67]

Believing that the EU needs reforms is not the same as not supporting it anymore. The French and the Germans are also sick and tired of the way how the EU is set up at the moment. That doesn't mean though that they hate the general idea that's behind the union.

The provided link above is garbage (like the rest of the post, which was completely off-topic). There are no usable historical maps hosted on that server. Instead, they offer a paid download service for something that is available for free on many other web sites. Try these links instead:

Language / Grammar - difference between "jaki" and "co" in Polish language [43]

@Dominic

I agree. "Genauer gesagt" is a much better translation, but there are some cases where "beziehungsweise" could also be used in the sense of "genauer gesagt".

Example:
Der Wert des Dollars, beziehungsweise sein Umtauschkurs, hat sich verändert.
(The value of the dollar, or - more specifically - its exchange rate has changed.)

Language / Grammar - difference between "jaki" and "co" in Polish language [43]

Sort of like "unbekannterweise". Normally, the best rendering into English is "...although we've never met".

I would translate "unbekannterweise" into "unbeknown". "Beziehungsweise" is a little trickier because it can have different meanings in German. "Alternatively", "or", "or rather", "more specifically" for example.
