History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [275]

a democratically elected leader who upheld the rules of democracy

But she was in office far too long, crippling the entire political system along the way. After 8-10 years, no head of state is really effective at serving the citizenry - they begin to serve themselves which is bad for the system as a whole.

Worst, she continued the horrifically misguided policy of making Germany into a hostage of a dictator by making the economy so dependent on Russian hydrocarbons. She wasn't the only or worst guilty party in that process but what did she do to stop it or provide alternatives?

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [275]

Do Hungarians really hope for playing the role of a hyena next to the RuSSian bear?

Not so much Hungarians, from what I gather many just didn't want a change in uncertain times... like Putin and Merkel and Erdogan, Orban has somehow convinced many Hungarians that they can't survive without him...

You do see the two maps (the modern and pre-Trianon borders) all over the place in Hungary...

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

People from russia (and perhaps Ukraine too) have more challenges with English pron than Native speakers of Polish.

Quite true. I''ve followed some Russians online who write English at native level but when I found spoken interviews... yikes! I can barely understand what they're saying..

A person's first language shapes their speech apparatus in ways that make some other languages essentially impossible to pronounce really well.

That said, I've had several Russian speaking students who do manage reasonably well.

(Polish speakers are not disadvantaged in English but are horribly disadvantaged in languages in which vowel length is important (Japanese and some other Asian languages especially) they seem really uncapable of producing short and long vowel sounds).

Life / Debt in Poland. (problems at the polish customs?) [8]

if you can't offer any advice other than being an arrogant c*nt then stay off the post. Loser.

Something tells me that the poster is actually the "best friend" and he isn't as cleaned up as he thinks....

Life / Stereotypes about Polish people being stupid? [281]

Borders really seal in culture and cultures can vary widely.

That's why the modern left hates borders.... they reveal collective differences which are intolerable to the left which tends to see humans as interchangeable widgets....

Food / Poland's best cheap beers? [72]

Tyskie beer has become a hit in Germany

Why? I've tried it a few times and gotten terrible headaches each time (before I'm done with the first bottle) yikes, nasty stuff....

Life / Is it normal for men to abandon their children in Poland? [26]

about men abandoning their kids

Brother of a friend has done that twice.... he paid/pays child support but seemed to lose all interest in the kids after the divorce and made/makes no effort to visit (even though they live in the same city).

Before the divorce was very involved but after... ghost.

I've never heard of him

Me either, not really well known in Poland (though he's played with a couple of groups I'd heard of).

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

"pierdalać"

pierdalać is a back-formation

pierdolić = imperfective

if you add a prefix that makes it perfective, odpierdolić

to make an imperfective verb in that case you change some stem vowels to -a- and/or harden consonants and/or and a suffix with -w-

It's the same process with prosić, zaprosić and zapraszać (adding za- makes it perfective and so you change o to a and harden -si- to -sza- to have an imperfecive verb.

Does that make sense?

Work / American High School Teacher looking to teach English in Poland [27]

Poles aren't as didactícally hidebound as slightly older German pupils

short answer... "no, they're not"

Some years ago I knew and Irish guy who had taught in an adult education program. Once he made a joke about his Irish accent... and the next thing he knows there are people going to the administration complaining: They were paying for lessons in Hochenglisch and not some regional Dialekt...

Work / American High School Teacher looking to teach English in Poland [27]

Because we're the biggest travellers in the English speaking world

And terrible communicators... I've seen some impressively awful attempts. Foreign language learning has a lot of secondary benefits that can end up being more important than knowledge of a language for most people so ehn foreign language education is scaled back that kneecaps people's ability to communicate across language barriers.

Classes in the foreign country are a different mater, though in the case of the UK I think that ends up being more related to having a tourist experrience rather than actual language learning (the... very unique Szkutnik* used to have some words to say about that.

*why doesn't he have an English wikipedia page?

prefer standard English to American English

In Poland, saying you prefer British English is a Gricean response that doesn't necessarily correspond to reality (certainly almost no one actually attempts a British pronunciation).

Using the .... British method

How did the worst language learners in Europe get promoted to be in charge of foreign language learning? Makes no sense....

I think there is a time and place for classes with no use of the local language and a time and place where the learner's language is a valuable resource in learning...

Taiwan, ...advertise the fact that their teachers don't speak Chinese!

Taiwan has never struck me as a center of good foreign language learning... even in Asia....

Life / Healthcare Cover in Poland - accessing Spanish healthcare through ZUS? [5]

Polish citizens holding a European health card

I think it's Polish residents paying into ZUS (or permanent residents?) I'm not a citizen but I have karta stałego pobytu and I also have EKUZ (never had to use it so don't know how well it would work for me...)

Collaborators really cannot understand the mind of those who want freedom....

have the freedom to bring fags to elementary schools

How often was that happening in Ukraine?

Again your sick fantasies are not an argument about anything.

Genealogy / Wladyslaw and the English equivalent [22]

her name was Wladyslaw

A man's name, the female version is Władysława (now very rare). In old-fashioned pronunciation you can hear a sequence that sounds a bit like Lotty -łady- (in the modern pronunciation it would sound like 'wotty')

Off-Topic / Ukraine, Belarus, Russia in EU in 2030? [105]

very few Ukrainians would resist Russia willingly

A Russian speaking Ukrainian told me that Russians (even intelligent and well-meaning ones) just don't understand that Ukrainians don't like them very much and don't find Russian social life very appealing (Russians are obedient and passive while Ukrainians..... are neither).

This doesn't necessarily extend to interpersonal relations (this person was happily married to a Russian) but at the macro-level Ukraine has a very different history from Russia (related to different geographic and other factors) and Ukrainians, even if they only speak Russian, have no intention of joining any Russian led configuration.
