News / Mister President Andrzej Duda - Best Poland could get. [96]

You are absolutely right Crow. Duda is not good enough, If Poles support him then the country will move towards Eastern Europe and you, the nationalist world of old. If we, the Polish taxpayers, have any sense, then we will vote for a pro west candidate who realises that Poland is in central Europe, not eastern Europe. as Duda would have us believe (and you would be forced to remember that your country is a backwater)

we Serbians succeed. I

You Poles can consider yourself extremely lucky for we Serbs holding attention of the foe for few decades already.

PiS are right. Poles haven't murdered or supported the mass murder of anybody, at least since the Middle ages. They want nothing to do with your recent past, so I would forget it.

International English Language Testing System

Yes - sclerosis set in there:) I guess that the OP is trolling - heaven knows why. Actually jon - it is a "training "system, because IELTS builds the students# ability to summarise points (visuals for example) in a succint and "professional way" to mirror real life decisions. That why I always get it confused as a "training" system.

I don't pretend to know anything that other people don't really but after 30 years of making a living in education I must be doing something right. Please enlighten us what those two qualifications mean to you.

TEFL advanced could mean a myriad of things as jon says, as the term is generic (either some foundation course for teaching, or a student course) IELTS is exactly what it says on the tin. An international English language training system. Next problem? Not sure if I can help you with that though.

Mrs S

I have sent a PM with the address of a portal that you can log on to. You would get some enquiries and some ideas from that. Neither of those above are teaching qualifications as such - the second, as you will know, was originally designed for those non-native speakers who wish to carry out their professional lives down-under, in that God-forsaken country of Australia, or New Zealand to be more precise, to prove language competency.

News / Purturbing opinion: Poland is not a woman, it is a drunk, inept guy in depression [30]

the obsession with the past

My football team is the only English side apart from Liverpool to have retained the European cup. Living that glorious past has meant they forget to live in the present and are nowhere to be seen. That wont happen to Poland, but only if they get shot of these jokers masquerading as politicians pretty sharpish.

In the absence of Delph - the poster who would help you....

1. Register here. Then members can PM you.

2. Register on Polish life tutoring portals.

3. Language schools today generally employ locals and only employ 1 or 2 natives. The reasons are many. Cost is the obvious one. You can always visit their website and cold call them. I get offers all the time from schools. (see 2)

4. You will probably only work in the state sector if you have a pedagogical qual and hold a Masters degree. Though why you would want to.....as you know, Poland will probably never pay its' teachers properly.

5. TEFL a minimum if you want to be taken seriously.

As I said, the poster known as Delphdiomine and others will advise you better than I can. It also depends what type of teaching you want to do. Why restrict yourself to schools (by which I suppose you mean language schools) Do you want to teach schoolchildren, or adults etc (as in, what are you good at?)....for example I concentrate on training off-shore workers and technical/maritime English.

cynically comments Gretkowska

Your opinion or a quote? Obviously the latter. Please make this clear - otherwise it's biased reporting. Are you saying that you disagree with the allegory that she puts forward?

Nut job

That would be the speaker of the Sejm - but you suggested I couldn't speak my mind on that , as I am not a "citizen."

Life / Why do Silesians hate Poland? [41]

though Cesky Tesin is incredibly rundown compared to Cieszyn.

Now now Delph - you are being selective. Please don't tell me that Cieszyn is a tourist town. I used to frequent there every second Friday after college teaching: Tesin is the industrial part of the town as it was historically. It has always been ugly, apart from up by the park. However its' pubs (being Czech) are or at least were far superior to anything Cieszyn has to offer if you like good solid food and drink.'Tis true it has lost its' glamour for zloty earners because as you will know Czech used to be a boozers' paradise, with J&B and other quality whisky for 28 zl a bottle and the exchange rate was a steal.

Those were good days:)

Edit: Absolutely on topic MODS: You don't need me to tell you about the story of Lower Silesia/Tesin - which is one of the most regrettable stories in 20th century Polish history,

Lower Silesia/Tesin

Sorry - upper Silesia of course....

Life / Why do Silesians hate Poland? [41]

they tend to think the Silesian dialect is loaded with German words which may be true only in reference to urban Silesian.

Very interesting comments Ziemowit. I used to run a school in Chorzow and the local twang was very Germanic.

Serbians...Croats.........

Yeah.............So johnny and Mods? WTF? PS. On Topic. I lived in Silesia for 23 years and am entitled to complain about such an important thread being hijacked by a Serb nationalist. And if you want to call that out Johnny, then good luck with that.

Life / How to vote in the Polish elections? [23]

don`t vote for Duda

Difficult Crowie. We have a self serving clown where I live who has been in power as long as Putin, (and has made a living out of pretending he is "independent" - aka, he licks every orifice, depending on whose ******* needs a good cleaning at the time) and he is far too comfortable, and has burnt all the city funds on a fecking airport :(

Thinking of voting PIS :) :)

At no time ever has my wife or I felt threatened by them

Agreed. The drunks in my area are actually quite pleasant; they live in some sort of social housing scheme, and though I do wonder why they never work, I generally stop and chat when they make a fuss of my dog, and depending on the vibe of things I will dip into my pocket. Live and let live.

I would cross the street when I spy drunks in the UK.

You're not going to punch or kick anyone

Dolno was referring to the local postman, who according to Dolno thought it was funny not to even try to do his job. I was simply saying that I wouldn't let the man get away with it. Would you?

Didn't think so.

Poland hating troll Dougpol1

At least I'm not as smug as you Dolno. Not brainwashed either - probably because I know Poland better than you seem to. And I refuse to believe that Brits are living the "good life" down on the Polish farm. There is no way that Brits would put up with retiring to the catholicity and tedium of a western Polish village - obviously you mean those of Polish descent like yourself....... For the rest of us, the entreaties and threats of the local priest to "assimilate"into parish life, or rather, join the congregation, would no doubt end in the newcomer offering to punch him on the snout

And what's more Dolno, sorry that you don't like it, but I have contributed more than enough to have my say in Polish politics - more than you on that score. Employed status ZUS for 7 years, plus 1,400 zl in ZUS a month for 22 years, and employer ZUS for 15, is.........let's see..................that little lot would buy a house of some size in your village.........

So , in the meantime, to reiterate, in case you didn't get it, this Poland that you misguided souls are building is sending you back in time to the past, which is only glorious in children's history books, and those same children will be left to pick up the bill.

I treat it as one big game especially the bureaucracy

Idiotic post, if I may say so. It might be a game for you, but that joker would get my steel boot up his arse. Then we would see whose laughing. It must be fun living in your village if you're retired, but your scenario wouldn't be so amusing for those of your neighbours who don't have the time for being messed about.

Delph - don't you think those 51 percent state controlled companies will be swallowed up by global players eventually? How can they raise enough capital investment for infrastructure going forward when the state holds them back, under the guise of expansion through diversification - and why should we the taxpayers be held accountable?

Mystified.

why did citibank buy and take over Bank Handlowy?

Yes, I was a customer. They were the only bank who would pay out on international bankers' draft. The word in Katowice at the time was the bank was under capitalised and it was an aggressive takeover. Dunno; I was pretty shocked too, thinking BH w Warszawie was a big player. Wrong.

Same with a lot of the plants. Restructuring. Asset stripped. Reverse takeovers. Wholemeal closures. It was bitter, but hats off to Balcerowicz, otherwise Katowice would still be in the dark ages, instead of the viable metropolis it is today. As for the coal mines, it's a shame, but Margaret Thatcher, hated as she was, has been proved right when she realised that coal was of a bygone age. Her decision to decimate the UK coal industry, and Polands' decision to "invest" in Polish coal is political too.

And costs a lot of lives:( :(
All of the above had to go. Progress. No investment from the west, and you would still be shovelling coal into your cellars like your parents before you. Ask them if they enjoyed it.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Yes, it will have to wait now until next year probably and the 75th anniversary. It shouldn't be like that, but that seems to be the way of the world. Each country has it's own specific anniversaries and nobody cares about the collective anymore.....

get back to the bar

Not drunk in 10 months (it was a metaphor). And actually my voice does matter, because I have right of stay, and if I make a complaint to city hall, then they have to log it. That's all I need as a local inhabitant. After a certain period of time, Poles will come to their senses and normal service will be resumed, have no fear.

he is a major traitor of the people

Yes, I suppose we had the same controversy over Churchill. That's the way of great figures in history. I was talking with the wife tonight after the barney with Dolno. She was saying how selective my memory was. What communism was really like. She said that if you buckled down, didn't create a fuss, did as you were instructed, then in a small place like Dabowa Gornicza there was nothing to worry about.

She forgot to mention the simmering undercurrent, the curfews, the beatings, the internments (she suffered this herself, and if she could identify her captor today, I would nail him to a tree), - so I reminded her, and she said - oh yes - people didn't do anything - because after all that - they were scared.

Walesa wasn't scared, and neither were his colleagues. They had balls (of iron).
You should all be ashamed.

Polonia can go suck an egg

How many more times....
People (bus drivers, cleaners, dishwashers, street buskers, even ex university employees - who admittedly were never qualified to work there in the first place) who have lived in this country for 30 years and paid taxes have more say in the way in which Poland is governed (in terms of their rights to an opinion and lobbying their representatives) than anyone of Dirk's age who has lived their whole life in America.

IMO. And that's all it is. Irrespective of whether they can be arsed to be citizens or not. Citizens don't pay more taxes than non-citizens. .or vice-versa.

I am maybe overly happy to snipe at a member of Polonia who loves his mother country so much. So much that I am sure that he cannot wait to come here and don his Doc Martens and pay taxes and join in the fun.

I also will be returning to my Alma Mater in Blighty in due course, either alive or otherwise, but will not be leaving until I am ready and have served my 65 years - if I have Dirk's kind permission?

First off that was under POs tenure and second a polish bank took it over.

But everybody knows that SKOK was a PIS ploy - that's what brought them down. Just like in communism; finance playing politics. Or rather, politicians playing with finance.

What about the general with the sunglasses? Do keep up.I have consistently, since I came on this board, mirrored my Polish families' side of things that he should have answered for his crimes. Admittedly Harry and Delph saw things differently, but knowing what we know. old Wojciech was a wrong 'un.

Walesa on the other hand is only guilty of being not very bright and bombastic. But Poles elected him, and you keep cheering for the ballot box, so why be selective.

Just asked the wife. They were local informers, party members, who took umbrage at my photographing steam trains. So no guns.
