They haven't even debated it yet, never mind sent it to committee stage, had amendments proposed, returned it to the lower house then referred it to the upper house. They haven't abled the amendment,; in fact, they haven't even written it.

Even the Daily Mail article (a newspaper that's normally the Tories' strongest media support) quotes more voices against the idea than for it. It would also conflict with certain basic legal principles as well as evolving laws around the internet and is likely to face internal opposition within the Tory party before it could even get that far..

....well....I wonder about Mrs. Patel though....that is not a smart move, she can only lose with it. Either that proposal gets shut down and she is left looking stupid, or it gets taken on and she will be seen across Europe as an enemy of press-freedom!

German whistleblowing and document leaking seems to be mainly about money though!
Maybe there is not much to "whistle blow" or to leak concerning the failing immigrant policies and the bad state of our national security is already very well known...*shrug*

It may well not even get as far as being an official proposal. It's an internal consultation for which they're still accepting submissions. There will certainly be submissions from lawyers and relevant agencies as well as from representatives of the media, and they would only go forward with the proposal if they thought it had "legs". They would certainly take support/opposition within the parliamentary Tory party into account.

Some politicians use such "leaks" to the press to gauge the reactions to certain ideas...if something would be worthwhile to follow up or even not...if that is the case here we should never hear of it again!

Honestly, I suspect that the law aims less against the kind of leaks that threaten national security and more acainst those that embarass the government. Like when Johnson was quoted as saying "Let the bodies pile high" or Hancocks' affair was made public which finally forced him to resign.
