Law / Buying a USED CAR in Poland, my personal experiences and TRAPS to avoid !! [133]

An Australian complaining about buying a car in Poland, Oh the irony!, Firstly in Europe you get what you pay for and secondly they get sold for Market value. I bought a Volvo XC70 from a dealer here in Sydney, Its 3 years old and done 60k KMS and its spent months in the garage being repaired at my expense as the garage refuse to honour the warranty and Volvo say its not their problem, I've had a catalogue of electrical faults which on a 30k AUD car isn't acceptable. The dealers here are just as unsrupulous even through they are licenced, I bought mine from a volvo main dealer and its turned out to be rubbish.

Personally I wouldn't buy a car in PL after seeing the rubbish they drag into the country to repair and much prefer driving somethig with the steering wheel on the wrong side which has been maintained from the UK and I know where its been/

I've only really bought used BMWs and you can call any BMW dealer, give them the vin and they will fax you a copy of every service the car has ever had and work thats been carried out. Also Its always worth doing a HPI (REVS check in Australia) but i'm not sure if this exists in Poland.

Travel / Changing trains in Poznan [29]

You should be fine changing in 5 minutes, Does it say which platform your connection goes from in advance?

Anyway trains from Poznan to Leszno are quite regular so even if you miss your connection you'll be fine.

Love / WILDROVERS FIVE YEARS IN POLAND....come to an end...! [132]

That Maluch is going to Moscow, Thats amazing! Its still going then :) I might have to import one here,

Sydney is awesome but with working flat out and flying all over the country for conferences i haven't seen a great deal. I pass the opera house every morning on the ferry to work which is cool,

I might have to take a trip to Moscow at some point, It looks equally as interesting!

This is what you want..... tiny.cc/9c58k

Life / Smoking vs. Grilling on Balconies / High Rises in Poland [66]

I had a f*ck off massive inflatable paddling pool on my balcony last year and the neigbours hated it, You know those ones where you inflate the ring at the top, I was told off by the administration people as they explained it could make the building fall over. The spoil sport neigbours even complained when i emptied it.

As for having a BBQ's We had one on Sunday and nobody complained.

Love / 20% of adult Poles are single and live with Mummy! [241]

With the average wage being so low and property prices being very high I don't think its they don't have the guts just its not possible.

In my experience Poles leave home when they go to Uni and don't often return to live when they have finished, Where did you get the information from?

Also its more common to live with your parents for longer in the UK as leaving home is very expensive.

Travel / Renting a car in Jelenia Gora [4]

Hire from a larger company, Hertz, Budget and the like as a local polish company is more likely to rip you off with extra charges, Insurance penalties etc.

Law / Import a car from US to Poland [23]

I seriously wouldn't trust a Pole to put my car back together at this end. Have you ever seen Polish workmanship? Its dreadful and bordering on dangerous.

Australia / Thinking about moving to Australia [40]

Just out of interest how cold is it likely to get in Sydney during the winter months and also how early does it get dark, I'm sort of coming to terms with the fact that this year I will have endured the horrific polish winter and then will have the Aus winter and I despise dark nights, Small price to pay I suppose.

Australia / Thinking about moving to Australia [40]

you're more likely to be hit by a hoon in a ford/holden (gmh) here than be eaten by sharks.

I'm planning on staying there for good, The standard of living looks to be far better than in any european country and I don't think I could ever live in the UK again its just a mess. I've always dreamt of emigrating to australia so looks like my dream has come true. I can't wait its a matter of weeks now before I leave :)

when i was in the uk, all i was asked about were bugs, spiders and snakes. people are fascinated with it.

Its all we really hear about in the UK, Maybe its government propaganda to try and keep the entire working population from leaving to go and live there.

I was really paranoid about the spiders but everyone i've spoken to assures me that they are fairly rare especially if living in a modern apartment in the city.

Anyway roll on April I really can't wait for the good food, good way of life and some great skiing this summer.

Jesus Christ you are ****i ng thick!

What a typical moronic polish view on something. Poland is violent because of the idiots that live here. Aboriginal people also have nothing to do with black music, rap culture etc now shut the **** up you failed abortion.

Australia looks to be an amazing place, hence why i'm leaving to go there in a few weeks, They have excellent ski resorts between july and October and as everyone knows great beaches.

The countryside looks much more diverse than the baron, flat peasant infested polish countryside where they still farm by hand and eat their young and you can go from surfing in the sea to skiing in the mountains within a matter of hours.

That guide of the cost of living was excellent, thanks for that :) Rent in sydney looks to be quite expensive though 400 - 500 pw for anything decent.

The main thing that worries me is all the deadly animals and insects there but I would much rather die being eaten by a great white shark surfing in Aus than by getting hit my some moron here in Poland who thinks is Daewoo/Skoda can break the land speed record in the moddle of the city.

Travel / How do I go by ferry from south of England to Gdynia? [15]

Do Dover to Dunkirk and then its a flat out drive through europe, Should take no more than 16 hours, Aim to travel through europe on a Sunday to avoid traffic, I've done it more times than I can remember and its a really easy drive. You could even do Portsmouth to Cherbourg and then drive through france if you want to avoid the dreaded a303.

Law / Contracts for IT staff in Poland [12]

Register your company in the UK, It can be done online within 20 minutes, Tax is lower than in Poland and its also easier from a creative accounting point of view.

Drop delphian a PM and i'm sure he can help if not I can also put you in touch with an excellent accountant who will point you in the right direction.

Travel / Driving to Poland from Ireland end of jan, Need Advice [26]

I've got a set: they're sitting in the basement. Snow: fail.

Are they 205 60 15? Wanna sell? :) I can't chage the bloody tyres now anyway as i left the locking wheel nut in the UK without realising :(

.A car with the engine at the front , and the driving wheels at the back will be a bit hopeless on snow

Yes I agree, Coming back through Germany the other week it was strange to see that the BMW lane had moved from the outside lane to the crawler lane where all the rwd cars were practically stuck or the drivers were to scared to even breathe on the accelerator pedal for fear of spinning off in a ball of flames.

It was really funny to see one of those utterly ridiculous porsche cayenne 4x4 things stuck in the snow though, I still fail to see the point of such a creation.

Remember to top your washers up with fluid that won't freeze too, Mine has been frozen for weeks after filling it with water and i can't get it out until it melts :)

News / Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport to close in September [27]

Why do you say that? What's incompetent about closing a runway to perform needed maintenance on the slowest weekends when it is still safe to do so?

Nothings incompetent about closing the runway when it needs to be repaired, They should have probably told the airlines who use the runway that it is being closed to avoid any problems.

They have telephones and the internet in Poland why is communication such a big deal? If communication was utilised here then there wouldn't be a string of engineering fuc k ups ie the train tunnel which isn't big enough to run a train through, the motorway which the 2 halves miss each other by miles etc. I know Poland is still developing its infra structure but it seems to be undertaken by corrupt and mindless officials who don't have a clue. Add to that bone idle workers with the don't give a damn attitude which is so profound in Polish culture and cases like this just keep happening.

That said once they have repaired the runway they will probably make such a hash of it they will have to close it again 3 weeks later to replace the lot in true polish style.

Travel / Driving to Poland from Ireland end of jan, Need Advice [26]

Get winter tyres fitted, we struggle back the other week on summer tyres and ze germans don't seem to grit or plow the roads very often. If you are thinking of travelling in a BMW forget it as they are utterly useless in the snow as we found out! 30 mph most of the way back.

As for hotels, essen is a good half way point to stop and there is an etap hotel which is reasonable, well actually really basic and **** but its clean and really cheap.

Make sure you keep your tank topped up as you could be stuck in traffic for hours if the weather is bad and you will need to keep your engine running for heat. Regarding towing a trailer if you can avoid it but be prepared to take it really really steady.

In good weather I normally do North Cornwall to Poznan in one hit and it takes around 15 hours and costs around £180 each way in fuel. Get the ferry from Dover to Dunkirk as its much cheaper £25 each way and top up with fuel before you leave the UK as fuel in the euro currency zone is really expensive.

If you need any more advice drop me a pm as I do the trip quite regularly and would be happy to help.

Law / Polish EU Drivers Licence - can I get one the easy way (by paying for it)? [185]

not in the uk they won't change it over, i have also seen 6 mths term in other countrys

If you can already drive then passing the test in the uk should be easy for you and take a matter of weeks, do your theory which is easy and then do a weeks intensive course which you should pass,

sorry our laws don't allow you to drive on a provisional in europe but you can see it makes sense.

Although the oz way does seem to be quite a good way, do you have to take a test or can you just jump in a skyline attach the p plates and go for it?
