Life / What is customer service in Warsaw like? Poland. [8]

Service in stores is terrible in all 3 places, Nothing to do with being Slavs and everything to do with the legacy of communism and the slow inroads made by modern retail (which only started 20 years ago and didn't really get going until 2004).

Life / What is customer service in Warsaw like? Poland. [8]

Once I arrived and my luggage got lost on the way the next day I knew that if I got to the shop I could buy a set of clothes and get back to my hotel and change in time for my meetings.

It was freezing about -7 and at 925 I was camped outside the door of a store obviously waiting to spend money, But rather than let me in

the security guard just paced up and down outside the door until it was 931 and then the mgr unlocked. Just one of literally thousands of examples I would have a poor service in Poland.

In Romania it is not. I visit often. However I do think that Romanians responds to tipping much better and recognise regular customers much better.

In Bulgaria there aren't hardly any shops I've only been a few times but I don't remember it for outstanding service. In general however the people are extremely friendly.

News / Poles march against Mandatory poisoning by vaccines [202]

I suppose so - though his wife did say the kids were vaccinated a few years later when she had a book to flog about her family.

Being unsure about compulsory vaccination is totally unrelated to supporting homeopathy. Its a cheap argument - I think homoeopathy is nonsense and of course it is not forced on anybody.

The argument about a small number of kids undermining supposed herd immunity is also overblown. At the risk of sounding like Dirk I bet there are probably 50,000 unvaccinated kids from Third World countries wandering around London Paris or Los Angeles. Are their parents also guilty of child abuse and wilful murder?

As IS says the argument is not simply anout vaccines, most of which work, but rather about free will and whether the states right supercedes the parents wishes.

Travel / Poland - never again [593]

You could not buy a house in those days without Ministry of interior permission.

You could not get a work permit for any old job - only in cases where there was a need or a missing skill, teaching English would be one such skill. It is an extremely valuable skill as it is help produce a management class in Poland who have been able to absorb lessons from the west and help develop Polish businesses that can be global.

The Marriott brigades that you denigrate were also people that had missing skills - economists, accountants, bankers, lawyers et cetera. The legacy today is that Poland has probably the strongest economy in the post communist world.

You have simply no idea what it was like to try and make a living in those times.

Doug seems a pretty well adjusted guy - If you're only method of valuing people is by the money they have then that is a sad and dispiriting way to view the world

If you think it was easy to make money in those days, maybe join Crow in Serbia and double your existing millions since that is a pretty good approximation of what poland was like in 1992.

News / Poles march against Mandatory poisoning by vaccines [202]

So would mandatory vaccinations extend to forcing it, probably with violence, onto Amish or others with genuine religious objections ?

Would you prevent unvaccinated children e.g. from Pakistan, Nigeria or Iraq entering the country?

Would you prevent children below the vaccination age from travelling to other countries where vaccination is not in force?

The black-and-white view simply cannot apply in every circumstance.

In fact before all the controversy about the MMR jab started, there were about 8% of kids in Western Europe not vaccinated - I do not remember this causing massive rates of measles, munos and whatever else it is.

Let's also consider what might happen if there was a genuinely controversial drug - like thalidomide- it was not withdrawn overnight, there was a decade-long debate about whether or not it was safe and started obviously from someone questioning the clusters of deformities. If we were in a similar position now would you insist on mandatory vaccination of a drug that was possibly seriously harmful from? Why not tell parents the risks and let them decide?

There are obviously modern diseases which are growing - autism, certain cancers, certain neurological conditions. as I said I have no idea what is causing them, but it will be something that we were previously told was safe - whether its diet, environmental, medical, radioactivity et cetera.

News / Poles march against Mandatory poisoning by vaccines [202]

But what if someone is coming from Pakistan on holiday ?

There are some vaccines only adminstered when the kid is older - what if you need to travel in the meantime ( i had my TB jab when i was about 13 and yes i travelled before then)

What is the magic percentage below which this heard immunity does not work ? If it is 90 percent then is the 91st person ok but the 89th a child abusing murderer ? Any really clear statisitcs on herd immunity with undeniable results ?

Is state education compulsory ? Of course it is in almost every country - but some remote risks are deemed more important than that principle ?

What if a new vaccine is invented - in Poland would you retrospectively jab 6 million kids ? If not then wont this herd immunity thing be useless ?

Again - what jf major doubts are being raised about a treatment ? Should parents carry on regardless ?

There is little coherence to the mandatory vaccination argument - it seems more to come from a platform of posiions in the liberal press.

My problem is not ith vaccinations but by the insistence that the state knows better than parents and that the medical professions views are both settled and infallible.

Work / Is it difficult to make a living playing Soccer (football) in Poland? [54]

If you havent played semi pro in England i think that would be difficult to get amything in Poland worth more than a few hundred zloty a game.

Think my Dad played for Dunstable for a few games a long time ago ! He was in a few non league teams round there.

Why not try and get a coaching badge and get work at a summer camp for kids ? Dont know if that is feasible but its more realistic than playing pro

There are some bizarre things in this thread but the idea of building a cement factory in a few hectares site in a residential district of Wroclaw is pretty much the weirdest.

Life / Americanization of Poland - good or bad? [43]

Apart from macs, kfc, bk and starbucks i cannot think of an American retailer that has a serious presence in Poland. None of the food, clothing, sports, DIY or drugstores are American.

Gap, Footlocker and Exxon have been and gone but i cant think of many others.

Almost all malls have polish food available - there are chains like Altana, and Chlopskie jadlo plus pubs and plenty of stoisko selling sausage, cheese etc plus you can often eat at the deli counter in the supermarket which has plenty of kapusta and schab.

Did you really visit here ?

Since you don't live here and you don't have any kids to be corrupted then I don't really see why you are so angry about that.

I'm not so sure myself about them adopting kids but if they want to have a march and argue for equal treatment then that is totally fine. Certainly rather that than 60.000 football hooligans tanked up on Warka and speed - that is one thing nobody would let their kids anywhere near.

UK, Ireland / Former minister admits UK messed up on immigration [78]

[moved from]

But the EU has already accepted the British letter saying they will leave and have given them a concrete date to do so and a transition period with an end date (which the British are now trying to leave as open ended).

Only problem is the British are now in chaos - they have reduced immigration alright, thanks to the collapse in the pound then its not attractive any more compared to Spain, France or Germany. However the side effects of that are disastrous and already costing British families and the British govt dear - the govt might fall this week because they still cant decide how to manage Brexit and still cant be honest with the voters about the huge clusterf**k it will cause.

The kind of malls you are used to are obviously those where skinny permatanned botox models drive up top of the range SUV, have it valet parked and spend the oligarch husband money on tasteless shoes and handbags. Meanwhile the ordinary Russian punters have their noses pressed the glass watching what their thieving overlords are doing.

There aee hardly any families At this moronic 11th of November march - no responsible parent is going to let their kids anywhere near those violent and repressed thugs. I have witnessed it on a few occasions and 90% of the crowd are young males, mostly in Hoodies and solid boots and with a backpack full of mocne

Proud of bring themselves probably - certainly beats being a paid troll in a poorly lit Moscow basement while the boss is having parties on the superyacht.

Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

Sure - they are proud of being themselves and not compromising their idenity by pretending to be somethIng different.

That is better than pretending to be a retired PolAm engineer in some dull suburb of Chicago for instance.

Life / How do Polish people see homosexuality? [152]

So imagine if you got terribly sick in some horrible small town in Illinois on a Sunday and there was one pharmacy with the drug you needed. But when you get there the owner says that he will not serve Poles. Is that ok ?

Businesses expect the protection of the state if they are robbed or on fire - in return they must live by the laws of the state.

Russia has a big army, an untrustworthy leader, an extensive programme of espionage ained at subverting liberal democracy and a history of military intervention - in Georgia, Ukraine, Syria plus othet conflicts like Yugoslavia, Moldova.

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [869]

Rich you keep asking for specifics but they are provided to you - on its own Russian subversion of democracy in central Europe is damaging. We want the freedom to be able to choose our own idiots - not those favoured by Russia.

It is clear that democracy sit somewhere outside the Russian psyche, and it's somewhere within the western European psyche. In a country like Poland we want to develop as a democracy and not as a buffer state for paranoid thieves. We also want the fruits of our labour to flow to the ordinary people and not to a tiny group of oligarchs

Good result last night - they will be dancing on the streets of Chicago

History / Whom do the people in Poland hate more: Germans or Russians? [869]

I wouldn't say they are trying to impose their own version - but they certainly wish for policies that weaken coherence of Western Europe

That is why they have funded Le Pen in France, Brexit, Trump, probably some people in Italy and Germany as well. In Poland, check, hungry then they are very active and probably have a good number of spies in different departments et cetera

1 yes
2 yes probably but Russias weak economy is caused by its own choices
3 its a guess
4 russia's
5 nothing to do with refugees - more the peaceful alliance that has lasted imperfectly since 1945
5 dont complain - you earn good money for that
