Life / Examples of popular Polish music? [997]

@Miloslaw
I didn't know that particular song by Frąckowiak but I know the artist.
Your parents, grandparents, TV and now youtube help you get to know old songs.

As for Krystyna Pronko I have two favourites
Psalm stojących w kolejce

youtu.be/aU-3t8Wav7U

Jesteś lekiem na całe zło

youtu.be/HeyX1H3HTVQ

I actually didn't know Trafić w czas but it's good.

@Zlatko
The most famous one is Metro, I think.
First performed in the 1990s.
Litania by Edyta Górniak

youtu.be/fNOEJuScx9I

There are more I think plus Polish versions of internationally known musicals.

@mafketis
I think it was used in certain dialects -perhaps still is-not necessarilly Eastern ones.
There's this funny article about the Silesian dialect about three boys from the same neighbourhood that I can't find right know. But the whole point was to show the differences within the dialect like calling grandma babcia, oma and starka but also addressing their grandparents. I can't remember the exact examples but it was something like:

Co robisz?
Co Babcia robi?
Co robicie?

Genealogy / Polish & Prussian/German town name cross-reference. [100]

@Peter Taylor
OK, where do these documents come from?
Poland or the US? Especially the one you mention in your last post?
All of these names look somehow Germanised but still get no results in Google searches.
Have you found her immigration documents?
Was she RC or Jewish?
When did she immigrate?

Actually my dad often refers to his parents as babcia and dziadek. When he talks about his childhood he says Mama and Tata, though.

Also when you address your in-laws, it's common to sort of replace pan/pani with mama/tata like Co Mama robi?

@Chemikiem
I don't think I know Czerwony Tulipan yet the first song sounds familiar. I must have heard it before.
Samotna is just beautiful.

Akurat is great and their version of Do prostego człowieka is one of my favourite songs. The pretty much still up to date poem by Julian Tuwim from 1929 and Klaptocz's interpretation is just amazing.

Another poem by Tuwim in Klaptocz's interpretation this time with Buldog -Chrystus miasta

youtu.be/1_bEzlu4S74

And another one: Do generalow

And one more

Genealogy / Want to find a person [755]

@rmcdnepa
Were they from Kolbuszowa or Suwałki? They're pretty far from each other.
Start by garhering info about them in the US like immigration records on familysearch etc.
To be certain you find the correct people or know where to look, it'd be best to know their place of birth and religion.

Here's a site that helps you find out in which branch of state archives you may find archived records (some are available online )

szukajwarchiwach.pl/

Another useful tool is geneteka where millions of records are indexed but since it's a tedious job done by volunteers not everything is indexed.

geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=se&lang=eng

Kolbuszowa is in podkarpackie and Suwałki is in podlaskie.

Genealogy / Popular non-Poles of Polish descent [17]

Perhaps it would be more obvious that Pat Benatar is of Polish descent if she used her real name.
I had to google her anyway.
However, Sambora doesn't sound particularly Polish but it is apparently a Polish surname and Richie Sambora is also of Polish descent.
Johnny Galecki and Simon Helberg from TBBT also have some Polish ancestors.
And there's this comedy actor Danny Pudi who is half Polish and half Indian. Here's a video of him singing Płynie Wisła

As for alleged hatred towards the Polish diaspora, Moja droga ja Cię kocham seems to be quite well known here.

Genealogy / Polish Romani (gypsy) surnames [64]

@Taven baxtale
These are not Polish surnames - the diactric marks suggest another language.

@Kuchinski
It's a Polish surname.
It might be used by Polish Gypsies like other Polish surnames.

Genealogy / Popular non-Poles of Polish descent [17]

@Lenka
I've heard of her Polish roots as well. Though their ancestors might have come from what is now Ukraine. I remember her posting about her visit to Kiev. But I don't know really.

And there's the actress who plays Leonard's mother - Christine Baranski.

@Miloslaw
I also thought he was Italian. His surname looked kind of Italian to me. It turns out Sambor is an old Slavic first name. Oops.

@Chemikiem
I didn't know about Jon Bon Jovi though.

But apparently even Steven Tyler has some Polish ancestors.

@Joker
Some say his ancestors were Lipka Tatars.

And Bronson kind of reminded me of others. I have a biography of Lauren Bacall who was apparently friends with Kirk Douglas when they were teenagers - both of Polish Jewish descent.

@Chemikiem
These were nice.

Now something that some kind of hum in a sarcastic way when you need to wake up in the morning and you're not happy about it.

I kind of always 'knew' it was that old joyful song but just recently I came across it on YouTube and even though it begins as I expected I got really surprised when another singer joins in at 1:25 or so. It sounds great when that lady sings it.

As a curiosity really. And those hairdos and fashion :) I wonder what people will think of how we dress now in some 45 years :)

Radość o poranku

youtu.be/4yB7M5u3urA

Apparently someone agrees with me and uploaded just the part of the song when she sings.

I fajnie.
Mądrzy i mniej mądrzy. Ciekawi i nudni.

@Ironside

History / Project to set up weaving factories in Lodz in the 1880's [2]

The development of the industry in the 19th century Łódź was to a great extent. Within a hundred years it changed from a village of less than a thousand people to half a million industrial centre.

That's where the term Lodzermenschen comes
de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lodzermensch

In popular culture it's the topic of the novel and then film The Promised Land. It tells a story of three friends a Pole, a German and a Jew trying to set up their own factory.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Promised_Land_(novel)

Łódź was also pretty multicultural with Poles, Jews, Germans and Russians and their respective cultures and religions.
You may try contacting the state archives in Łódź for information about your family's metrical records as for their work experience I'm not sure the archives may find it easy if you don't know where he worked but that information might be in the church records assuming your family members were born, married and died there. Usually only their social status is mentioned though.

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [395]

There are posts on Facebook (and probably on other social media )that try to ridicule the W hour in Warsaw. They say that the decision to start the uprising was a tragic one.

Personally, I think people want to pay their respects to the victims and survivors. That's how I feel about it.

History / What do Poles owe to Jews? [586]

Carp is a must on Christmas Eve for me.
I eat it once or twice a year (if there are leftovers) and I truly enjoy it.
My sister-in-law doesn't eat carp and I can't understand why on earth anyone would eat other fish on that day if you can have it all year long.

It's in my blood, I'm sorry.
Actually I'm not :)

History / Cursed soldiers controvercy - not all Poles respect them [266]

There were good and bad ones in all Polish social classes and within ethnicities living in Poland at different times in history.
Not all NOBLEmen were that noble.
Take Targowica or Potocki who refused to cooperate with the Polish underground but was ok with hosting Gorring in Łańcut. There are more and more examples.

As for Jews in the communist/stalinist authorities , there were many but it wasn't only Jews who were responsible for Stalinist atrocities in Poland.

As for cursed soldiers, we can't judge them as a whole but their individual deeds.

Life / Understanding Polish Mailing Addresses [21]

00-910 is the postcode

The second line should be like:
ul. (Name of the street) 18 m.17

Ul=ulica -street

What seems to be missing is the name of the street. 18 is probably the house number and 17 is the flat number.
