Genealogy / I have Jewish DNA, but only know of Polish ancestry . [120]

But the requirement for membership of the ethnic group which is set by that group is (and please do correct me if I'm wrong here) having a Jewish mother, right? Meaning that somebody who has a partly Jewish father isn't Jewish, yes?

That's the traditional Orthodox view.

Here in America, Reform/Reconstructionist Jews and secular Jews view someone as Jewish from either parent.

so if you read the old book and it said that everyone comes from Adam and Eve and then they come from Noah after the flood are we all Jews?

Noah was not Jewish...

I'm not surprised a Catholic has poor knowledge of the Bible...

Love / The sexual lives of Polish immigrants (they have more sex than in Poland?) [16]

According to that survey the British people were the most promiscuous in the 2008 and I suspect it didn't change much since that time.

British is a pretty broad term. I'm willing to bet those with more of an Anglo-Saxon (Germanic) background are not as promiscuous as other Brits.

News / Parliament in Poland clears way for nuclear plant [78]

Is adopting a 19th-century technology really a progress?

The first nuclear power station wasn't built until the middle of the 20th century.

Nuclear power plants have greatly improved in safety over the years. In my opinion, it's better to have nuclear power stations rather than coal plants. Nuclear power stations don't pollute unless a problem occurs. Coal plants on the other hand constantly pollute. There is a small risk of a disaster with nuclear plants but I think it's worth it.

Poland should also look into replacing coal with natural gas. We've made huge transitions to natural gas here in the USA and we've cut our emissions greatly even though our energy demand is growing exponentially. Hopefully the EU will put pressure on Poland to do so. If they don't, maybe America should...

According to this link it doesn't grow:

As population increases and more areas in the US become industrialized, the demand is going to grow.

The use of energy has curbed because of our energy policy. We've become far more energy efficient over the last few decades. In fact, no other industrialized nation has made the progress we have in becoming more energy efficient. That's not going to last though unless we continue making drastic changes.

Just look at California. Half of the cars you see on the street are Prius cars or some other green car!

Love / What do you like most about Polish men? :) [51]

I'm not sure what good qualities Polish men can have. Whatever they are, they certainly don't have anything to do with their physical appearances. Never have I ever witnessed so many ugly men as I have when I was in Poland.

it's true there are not very many handsome Polish men but in which country in Europe handsome men are majority?

This is my point. Handsome men are a rarity in Poland.

most of people in the world look average.

I agree but most Polish men are not average. They are well below average!

USA, Canada / Bilateral Visa Waiver Agreement between USA and Poland [47]

I think the US citizens should be admitted to Poland under the same rules that apply to Polish citizens applying for visa to the USA.

Polish politicians wouldn't dare let that happen.

hats just the point isnt it ... surely if you asked a hundred americans where they would fancy going on holiday next summer- ,,,those wanting 2 hop foot it to poland -you could count on one hand , and thats being generous

I agree with you. Poland is not interesting at all for a typical vacation. Most Americans are much more interested in countries like the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Netherlands. However, there are some Americans that visit Poland for historical reasons. For example, I know quite a few Jewish Americans that visit Europe for historical sites and Poland is one of those countries they visit.

He could pass for a German. Germans have pretty diverse looks.

Life / Polish people are the most ignorant people in the world! [331]

I think it is wrong to call them ignorant. I'm sure there must be some who are individually that way, but on average I'd say they're more knowledgeable than us Brits, and therefore about 1000% more savvy than a typical American :-)

Funny how Poles have contributed far less to academia than Brits and Americans...

The Polish education system might be good at teaching people to memorize things. However, it fails at teaching people to think creatively and logically.

Anyway, a few weeks ago, I heard a Polish woman talking on her cell phone and saying some racist garbage about Hispanics and African-Americans in her surrounding. This is not the first time I've heard a Polish immigrant spew racist garbage.

Many Poles seem like really nice people when they speak in their broken English. However, once you learn a little bit of their language, you realize how extremely rude and racist many of them are.

Life / HBO's Looking. Would such a show air in Poland anytime soon? [3]

In America, HBO is airing a fantastic new show called Looking which is about the lives of three homosexual friends. Many people are praising the show. I know many young people (including straight people) who love watching the show. America has come a long way on the issue of homosexuality. 10 years ago, homophobia was a problem and unfortunately in some areas such as the south, it still is. However, homosexuals are definitely more accepted in American society today than they were a decade ago. State-by-state, same-sex marriage is becoming legal. So many celebrities have come out of the closet because they no longer fear rejection. Making fun of homosexuals and using the F word is no longer so popular among America's youth. (Although, unfortunately there are some low-IQ people who still do this.)

My question is, would such a show ever air anytime soon in Poland and be successful at the same time? I mean, let's face it, Poland is not as progressive as the US on LGBT issues. In many states, homosexuals can get married whereas homosexual marriage is illegal in all of Poland.

Here is a trailer by the way.

Life / HBO's Looking. Would such a show air in Poland anytime soon? [3]

Such a shame. Even if the show was written by one of the best writers in the industry?

Good news folks. The show has been renewed for a second season by HBO. Also, each consecutive episode aired has been gaining large amounts of viewers.

Genealogy / Would DNA test show Jewish genes? [10]

Yes, but at the same time, Ashkenazic Jews are more likely to possess genes that are linked to high level brain function.

It might explain why Jews have contributed more to science and academia in general compared to Christians or Muslims (per capita).

News / Is this the first clear and open signal that Poland makes preparations for war with Russia? [163]

Let's see how the US keeps its word to protect Ukraine before we agree to a crazy plan like that.

We promised to respect Ukraine's sovereignty and independence (as did the UK and Russia) so I'm not sure why you're singling out the US.

I also don't see how the US is obligated to protect Ukraine. We kept our promise. Russia didn't. It's not our responsibility to risk going to war with Russia just because they invaded a pro-Russian area of Ukraine that probably wants to be part of Russia anyway.
