News / Why is Amazon not present in Poland? [57]

1. It is worse than working in the Post Office or in a factory - where there is comaraderie and banter/ chat to pass the time.

Yes, that's why jobs in Post Office are very desired in less developed regions (basically all small towns).

It is an unsustainable model and produces nothing, just distributes.

It's not up us to worry about Amazon making profit. Services are equally important as production, especially, that with technological progress less people is needed in production.

Therefore we have more roads, more transport, more noise and light pollution. For what? By your admission - so that other countries can get their post free cheap goods.

Is it such a big problem, that few more cars will travel on the highway Poznań - Germany and Wrocław - Germany? They will have to pay for it anyway.

Again, it suggests that Poland is the dumping ground - and "those Poles will work for less".

Of course these are not R&D jobs, but still jobs. Germans will miss them.

Of course it damages local competition. I take it you do not run a small business?

Average salary ratio to GDP in Poland is too low, so little extra competition for workers, especially unskilled shouldn't be a problem.

The point is not the pay. The pay is low. A lot of people in Poland work for low pay - and that is irresponsible of the employers and they can get away with it.

And still you're against extra competition for workers? Have you heard about supply and demand?

Travel / Do trains in Poland arrive on time? [38]

Can I trust this schedule that such intercity trains should arrive on time? Or can I expect some delay?

Nobody really knows, because it's a new train to Poland and this track is still being renovated. Better count some extra time for delays if it's very important.

Life / Move to Poland or UK? (Advice needed) [51]

P.S Business administration from Komvux is not enough to get a job in Poland I assume?

I don't know if you have experience with work in call center. I think that Nojas tried to tell you that it's better to have a degree in order to get a job where you could progress. Many call centers do simple telephone sale. The work is boring and tedious. You can be replaced any time by anybody who can speak the language. I remember watching American movies from 70' where such office jobs are presented as the worst kind. It came little later to Poland. As DominicB says call center workers are 21 century cotton gatherers. And the problem is that such easiest jobs are first to disappear during time of crisis. So it's not enough for you to just be ready to live simple life and do simple job. You should also gather savings all the time in order to survive few years without employment (or be elastic to change a country).

News / Why is Amazon not present in Poland? [57]

There is no need to complain about Amazon. Currently it's only positive for Poland:
- it decreases unemployment in the region
- it doesn't compete with their products with local companies as it exports services
- it increases salaries in Poznań and Wrocław because it competes for workers.
Many Poles work already in German Amazon, so now don't have to emigrate. They provide free transportation to work, so give work not only to citizens of big cities, but also many smaller located near Wrocław and Poznań. It isn't only employer in the region, so people don't have to agree to work there if conditions are too bad. It can serve as employer of last hope ;)

You can see forum users profiles, like here: ?action=userinfo&user=52023. If somebody answers yes to "Speaks Polish?" then probably is Polish, so yes I am.

Work / Salary Expectation for HCL Senior JAVA Developer with 4 years experience in Poland [66]

This one? linkedin.com/jobs2/view/12484114
When searching for work in bigger companies it's good to see what Glassdoor says. But I think, that for Kraków department there is too little data:

glassdoor.com/Salary/HCL-Technologies-Krak%C3%B3w-Salaries-EI_IE553909.0,16_IL.17,23_IC3017091.htm

If you haven't seen these salary reports:
tiny.cc/hays-pdf (add 10%, because it's few years old)
hays.pl/en/media-centre/HAYS_712672
gazetapraca.pl/gazetapraca/0,74897.html (search Java)
placeprogramistow.apphb.com

Basically median is 6000PLN gross. If you are a perfect candidate for the position, then you could ask for 10000 gross, but perhaps it's over the budget since they search for employees from India. Here you can see many job offers for Java programmers in Kraków. Some of them have information about salaries:

4programmers.net/Praca/Szukaj?q=Java+Krak%C3%B3w

@1: Apartment with fees 2000 zł in the center, 1600 zł away from the center. Food cooked at home 400 - 1000 zł. Transportation 150 zł. Internet + telephone 70 - 150 zł.
numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=India&country2=Poland&city1=Mumbai&city2=Krakow+%28Cracow%29

@2: I guess that Kraków had bad climate for Indians (used to warmth) during autumn and winter. If you choose good neighborhood (away from blocks) then it shouldn't be bad place to live for you.

Life / Move to Poland or UK? (Advice needed) [51]

Don't you have smaller towns in Sweden with less foreigners? Somewhere in more remote regions? As for Poland then we don't have many foreigners, but we don't have high salaries, so most of Call Center jobs don't pay much. But you are Swedish native speaker, so perhaps you can find something paying 1000eur net. As people noticed your comparison Poland vs UK is ridicules. Completely different countries. I wonder why you're not considering warmer regions of Europe.

But surely by moving to another country you would be making that country more Multi-Cultural?

I guess that multi-cultural means in reality not European culture.

Real Estate / Wroclaw....good parts? Any "affluent, quaint European, suburb" areas here? [14]

Just hang around in few places. Keep your stuff in some garage and move each month into new place rent through airbnb.com. I also think that Czech Republic is better place than Poland. It's similar in terms of cost, but it's more organised, cleaner (I don't know about people though). You should not forget about climate and language. It's good to know local language and Polish does not belong to the simplest to learn. Climate in cheap Greece, Portugal or Croatia is very different from Polish. People are quite different too.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

It depends which foreigners. For example Indian cuisine is completely different from Polish, so when Indians want to cook as at home it will be more expensive. Also locals have sometimes easier to negotiate price for apartment. Locals know which pub have good and cheap bear and which market sell products in good prices. Also local know better how to manage taxes, where to buy tickets. But these are thing possible to learn.

Play with Numbeo. According to the website Kraków is 12% cheaper than Prague, so roughly the same.

News / Turkey abolished visas for Poles. [80]

I didnt say being in schengen would be enough except the case of UK .

I thought that you had said exactly that.

So what you are saying is that instead of Russian Oligarchs, it is now Polish "Oligarchs" bringing their dollars to Turkey? :)

Nothing will make up for them. But many middle class Russians will choose Sochi over Turkey, because Rubel's lose of value.

Ireland has a common travel area with the UK and is therefore not a full member of Schengen. Schengenvisas do not apply to Ireland.

Perhaps. I've never been there.

You're right. I meant Spain, or Portugal or Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Norway. All are in Schengen, but need Visa to Turkey.

Real Estate / Bydgoszcz - studio/apartments [19]

Why not?

Because agencies don't deal with it. They rather rent more expensive apartments and don't bother with cheap or rooms. If you want to rent a room before arriving to Poland your only bet is previously mentioned by me airbnb.pl Later you can do as DominicB suggested.

News / Turkey abolished visas for Poles. [80]

, although the second link you've posted is kind of questionable. What does the abolishment of visa restrictions have to do with Polish patriots and the partitions? Also, do you really believe that the EU will ever open the Schengen area to Turkey? Never going to happen.

This is how prime minister and press commented that.

Also if anyone gets a visa for schengen countries with multipass they need to apply for visa especially for england.

But it has nothing to do with entry to Turkey or Turkish Visa...

it means they should put their mind together and get in to shengen.

What Schengen has to do with Visa to Turkey? Nothing.

Work / Average salary to live&work in Wrocław? Local Credit Suisse opinions. [33]

It doesn't matter whether he comes from Catalunya (Singapore) or Catalonia

It matters, because then the company has to prove that they cannot find suitable candidate from within EU. So basically you disagree with EU idea of single work market. Without the single work market, it would be as you want. Permit would be needed to employ foreigner.

IMHO even if I could agree with you in some extent, I don't think that employing foreigners for more than average salary is something wrong. The more people earning over average the more specialists working in the economy. Problem would be if such companies were hiring foreign graduates instead of schooling local. But I don't think this is the problem. I guess that in case of graduates employed from abroad it's always about language competencies unavailable in Poland.

@Paul: so where are you from :) ?

Work / Average salary to live&work in Wrocław? Local Credit Suisse opinions. [33]

Even if from Catalonia (the poster here is not)

but he wrote

Hi everyone, my name is Pau, 28 years old, coming from Catalunya

and wiki says: "Katalonia (kat. Catalunya [kətəˈɫuɲə], hiszp. Cataluña, oksytański Catalonha) "

The relocation bill (if any) for hiring someone from Lublin, or Gdansk, or another town where salaries are less than Wrocław's, would surely not exceed that of relocating someone from another country.

But any Spanish financial controllers working elsewhere in Polnad could be not willing to move.

They are probably given tax incentives to set up shop in Poland and hire locals, yet their sites have head scratchingly large numbers of foreign national "managers" or whatever other "specialist roles" from their home country or elsewhere (in their hundreds if not thousands) and far fewer local Polish workers than should be the case. This seems to me to say that something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

Still it's good for the economy, because their workers pay taxes in Poland.
