Life / Bishops defend Polish family [105]

Congress has never been more dysfunctional because the Catholic Church is trying to get the Republicans to legislate morality

Dude..Who are all the CATHOLIC republicans you speak of. How many are in Electoral College? We are rare and hassled by family all the time! MOST CATHOLICS ARE DEMOCRATS.(see above). You keep parroting it-give ONE solid example? Who when ? Did they meet even the Pope-are they often invited to Archbishops Councils?

You want to bash Republicans and Catholics so bad you are making them into a chimera. You must be very extreme Left to be so focused and obsessed on unsubstatiated theory. you may truthfully and correctly say radical Right supporters. But the rest is whiney biased hogwash. And kinda offensive.

And you are unlikely a US Catholic are you...or you would know this.

The Church didn't require a priest at marriage until 1563, so for approximately 1200 years all people had to do was move in together which is what they did.

"SURVEY SAYS?" Bzzzzt!
A simplistic view... the Church still had rules. As did non Christians. Which "The Church " do you refer? After it as called Catholic? As did non Christians. There were many SPECIFIC rules for marriage even in primitive culture.. though no piece of paper. Modern property law was not as it was then, nor couples raising children themselves instead of in big family clan units. I know Cherokee didn't just "shack up " and it is instant marriage bann.

Because it was all about land ownership-specially the later styles of marriage. At least these customs provided women with some limited freedoms.

Catholicism was the practiced religion, and everything revolved around the parish church. Before a marriage could take place, the church required that there be no relation between the couple. This issue was debated for centuries, but as early as the 13th century, it was fixed at four degrees. (This means that a couple who shared a great-great-grandfather could not marry.) This often created a problem for the people living within a small village. A preexisting marriage or prior marriage agreement could also prevent the marriage (Marriage: MOwest).

blogs.wp.missouristate.edu/creativewritingcontest/2008/07/19/marriage

However Ancient Egypt did

Marriage was an agreement or a contract between two families[/i] that involved the exchange of gifts and property. (...)

In Catholic Scotland it was required to obtain a marriage license or to have the banns read in church for three Sundays in a row

Wedding rings-more durable than paper is as old as 2800BC Egypt
Which finger is ring finger is as old as 3rdBC Greece
Marriage Customs from 200 N. EU like carrying the bride over threshold are with us today

During European feudal times, all public announcements concerning deaths, taxes, or births were called "banns". Today we use the term exclusively for an announcement that two people propose to marry. That interpretation began as a result of an order by Charlemagne, king of the
Franks, who on Christmas Day in A.D. 800was crowned Emperor of the Romans, marking
the birth of the Holy Roman Empire . Charlemagne, with a vast region to rule, had a practical medical reason for instituting marriage banns.HE issued an edict throughout his unified kingdom: All marriages were to be publicly proclaimed at least seven days prior to the ceremony.

Your use of "cynic" is clever but does not apply in context. they were a cult following of Antisthenes (socrates lesser disciple angry that favor was given to the monied student; Plato. asn had a political bent against teh affluent which is were his preaching morality =no materials craop came from) who became famous for being alybaout rabble and for viscious physical attacks on the rich Good reads:

Oh and The Holy Bible. It really is a good read..agree or not with its content. New testament mostly applies to today with exceptions Jesus mentioned from deuteronomy and numbers. And the Didache...though you may not consider THAT scripture even if it is a compilation done by the living apostles of Jesus and their disciples. The Scriptures do not use word "MORTAL" but you are shaving hens teeth. However Jesus, John and Paul ALL address the sins of eternal Death and their works are considered 'Scriptures" The Catholic Church named the deadly sins venial and mortal. But they were named and split in the time of Christ. The sins you could chance dying with versus the sins that were one way tickets to hot town.

wow what a waste of my classical education..... the internet.*sigh*

Life / Made in Poland clothes (Warsaw) [12]

Americans think they are too good to make clothes

Aww that is not fair..

The Carolinas were big into textiles AND assembly wel into the 80s. Many well known and respected Union label brands were outsourced when the textiles mills moved out of country. Many were brands that were for Older Dept stores. But Land & Sea, Tanner , Levi's, Wrangler (which I belive is in Poland ;p now )

1 in 10 manufaturing jobs were in clothing assembly until mid 80s. American brands were usually union lables so cost was often 3x more than say asian made before markup. And sweatshops for clothing assemby were becoming more common during the phase over to outsourcing. Once the tariffs and restrictions were removed from these corporations about operating overseas asn "importing" brand product. Especially private label"

Various trade liberalization initiatives and import restrictions on textiles and apparel have defined U.S. foreign policy in the industry over the past several decades. In 1974 and four times after that, some 45 signatories—including eight developed countries and dozens of developing ones—signed a pact called the Multi Fiber Arrangement, which established restrictions and quotas for the import of textiles and goods from developing countries into developed ones. This 30-year buffer expired in 2004. In 2005, apparel imports from China increased by almost 100 percent. And the biggest rapid decline was DIRECTLY thanks to NAFTA.

Walmart coaxed big textile giants like Cannon do move overseas for cheaper production.

The Free trade agreement wil take the last of local cotton and textile overseas. I wonder what links there are left nowdays. Plenty prolly.

*sigh* PHX I want to go home to Payson soooooo bad. I hate humidity!

Life / Bishops defend Polish family [105]

An article from 2008? ABOUT AN EVENT IN 2005? Really? in the ..*cure dramatic music* OPINIONS section? Something that is 2 elections ago?
An opinon piece by a writer who used to have a bias against the catholic church but became a Catholic and is part of NCR and here:

So in any article he would REACH for catholic connection-firstto bash..now to praise. He is actually a celebrity of sorts in conversion.

"...The second trajectory setting encounter ((**for his conversion**)) was with a Catholic co-worker whom I hassled regularly. In my mind she was not a Christian[/i] and thus a target for evangelism. Worse yet, she was a wolf among sheep (we worked together in a prominent evangelical ministry). After a year of patient replies to my constant prodding, she announced that she was leaving. At her going away party she asked five of her co-workers to sit on high bar-stool like chairs prominently placed at the front of the department meeting area.[/i]

I guess part my fault..I didnt specify on TODAY'S regime. and it still the article no STATISTICAL evidence on the lawmakers of time, only names which were obvious AND Republican. But any President would meet the NEW POPE elected 2005. DOH! That does not indicate closed door negotiations. Bush sure aint no catholic. Sometimes the right meets and shakes hands in views on Conservative, traditional values. That's all.Tsk!

Theoria, Praxis, and the Contemplative Life after Plato and Aristotle
edited by Thomas Bénatouïl, Mauro Bonazzi (About the Hellenistic Golden Age an philosophy schools)::

" ...it might seem natural for philosophers to embrace the contemplative lifeor some version of it, thus promoting their own devotions to philosophical teaching asn research in order to gain more followers. Clearly this is not what happened. After first generation of disciples of Plato, we have no trace of explicit defence of contemplation in the Academy. As to the new philosophical schools, the Cynicsor the Pyrrhonists** , the Epicureans or teh Stoics, they clearly did not subscribe to Plato's and Aristotle's Lebensideal and even attacked several aspects of it."

**"The Cynics are probably the most radical opponents of contemplative life[/b], since they do away not only with knowledge of heavens as useless but also intellectual knowledge asn imitation of god as a whole: See Diog Laert. 6.27 about Diogenes moking astronomy, also Diog.Laert.9.64-65 AND Sextus Adv. Math 11.20=fr 60-62 by Caizzi***

And um dude..no false God.. if there is a flaunt to the Commandments it would have to be..IDOLTRY...IMAGES. And who says allCatholics think it proper?

And I think the words of Daniel Burke can apply:

"A friend of mine who had preceded me to Rome confronted me with the most difficult choice I faced. "When are you going to recognize that there are only two options? You either submit to the Church and the authority that Christ established, or you rule yourself on the basis of your own judgement" - which, he reminded me, was the fundamental choice that had spawned over 30,000 denominations since the Reformation. His question resonated with me and brought it all down to a very simple equation; I would either trust in my own limited judgment [...]"

something gone crazy with bold-I cannot correct edit it- mod plz?)

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

Wow, as I was dithering and lurking; this thread sure took a turn!

I 'm an opinionated cuss myself ..but no need to get so mean and personal.

Though I have met very few former native Polish here in US (I must live in places that dont interest them?), I have met a plethora of people...and quite a few illegals as well. Though I've seen some use the system (and big fat momma from Okie town don't?), in general I have only seen a widespread use of the system by latinos and Armenians. Mostly Mexicans.

Regardless of that , I must say to OP; I have -as a fairly white looking rehead American with Southern accent- met very few new arrived/1st generaton "foriegn" people living in US that "Hate" Americans.

Many cultures regard us spoiled and lazy. They are not wholly incorrect. But they are usually the ones cringing in expectation of me saying something terrible because my sterotype acccent.

Horrible suburbs? are just neighborhoods about to become ghettos. The real Estate booms that hit in 80s ( i was home in AZ during the Keating 5) and then again in the Bailouts left ghosttowns that were not maintained and brought down rest of the area. But most suburbs I know still look nice even being 30-40 years old.

(I admit that the Valley in LA, Geary Ave in SF, Virgina Beach, VA; Phoenix/Mesa AZ; and Oly , WA are the only large Cities that Ive lived in Suburbs instead of on post. Most areas I've lived were Military Compounds and Rural suburbs. But I've only seen that kind of hellhole in mostly abandoned hoods or places where govt did sudden relocate of the not best representatives of some countries en mass)

The few Polish I have met that were able to communicate enough, were pessimistic, introverted dry weisenhiemers that got totally bombed when partying. But Hate American's? Nope. Goes for most transplants I've met incl illegal : Laotions, Vietamese, Mexicans, Dominicans, Russians, Armenians and one surly canuck (whhhyyyy? lol. He stayed in Phx and worked undertable. too surly to get along with other canadians?*snerk*). Goes for military spouses from other places.

All I ever got in a consensus is our food sucks and is bad for you. >_<

I sure don't want to live where these people posting have lived. P|0x- give locations to avoid-Thx!
____________________________________________________

Okay I lie..! That one location sounded interesting! most I made as a general contractor was 21/hr. That company went under when owner's wife got cancer. I went Army. But whatever state that is ; warszawianka ? I want to work where I make 50/hr under table!! !! Me! Me..pick me! I do drywall, plumbing, plasterwork, brickwork, stonework, framing and carpet. I also do tile work, including pool as well as roofing including slate tile when I was licensed. I never got trained or wanted electrical or AC work. I can operate heavy equip(thx uncle sam). I read blueprints, can mix concrete. I also can weld wrought iron. I can pretend to know bad english..I'l speak enough pidgin basque or tsalagi. I 'll dye my hair dark and be their big dumb indian the whole building season for 50/hr tax free!

And those easy benefits! My youngest is disabled and I have to fight and prove Im not rich overnight nor him cured EVERY 3 months. Though mostly Boheme, I have "Hispanic" and 1/8 "Native American", I'm female. Over 40 AND a 10%disabled VETERAN. I'm the token EVERYTHING! I get? NADA In NC/AZ and FL this applied. It must be same trick those hoodrats in designer gear with bling and iphones use in SW US.

Man, I should get EVERYTHING in that state! ;p

Do I HAVE to be pregnant? *sigh* I'll take the job first. Concrete work I did undertable in AZ only paid about 10/hr in 2009.

Hey seriously-they pay 50/hr under table_Im looking for shithole apt in that zone like yesterday! And I'll hire one of those girls you mention, that has children that look wellfed and clean to watch my kid. She can be like my wife on loan.

I am soon going to stay with my mom and work at the axle plant for far less to catch up my finance a little and get savings back up. I'll be making 11/hr after probation as "temp".

Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

I can't say I "love it "since it is romantic concept til I actually begin living there. I better learn to love it since the long range plans with my betrothed is retiring there.. ^_^ Which is part of reason I am here. To learn more of present poland.

But I did always like archaic history of the region including, Polish history.
I was always *le sigh* as a lil girl over Hussars, specially the Polish Winged Calvary. Sketched historical battles, dinosaurs, puppies, horses, castles and Hussars. Oh and fair maidens. Still do, well not so much puppies and dinosaurs anymore.

And I like the sound of it spoken more than the Boheme I grew up with. So soft. And I certainly love the foods.

My bestest best friend in all the world is 1/2 Polish 1st generation stateside. Been in Germany last 6 years.
My chosen sister for 13 years is Slovak
My second bestest best friend... is gonna marry me and is native.
There is something beyond coincidence in this.

Realistically I am hoping it it is not too humid, I am asthmatic. I hope I find something to do while retired. I'm normally kinda of outdoorsy. This past 2 years is unsual. I don't think it will be Golf. Allergies.. meh. I'll deal. I might get ancy in the winters but Germany and SNOWBOARDING are not far away-WOOOO! I'll miss hunting wild pig, deer and elk. I am sure there are some things I am spoiled with , that I may miss. Product availability, infrastructure EVERYwhere (mostly I am spoiled by fast reliable broadband internet) maybe.

USA, Canada / Getting a VISA to USA by a Polish person nowadays [339]

It is hard..
there were so many hoops to leap that this Sept a visit was cancelled. He is wholesome college student from good family and no bad record.

If the rate of complications that military friends had is anything to go by, it is tougher for quite a few EU nations it seems, especially E and Central.

But I have been instrumental in getting legal and illegal mexicans Visas (my mum married a legal and his cousins were NOT). Yet when I used the same process for a simple visit Visa? it PHAiLD. I was shocked. The whole summer was wasted trying to do this. At least most the funds were returned.

Next time it will be a finacee Visa. And I had that process set up for me by an atty, so when we are ready I just date everything and send the packets.

I only hope when we and our kid(s) go other direction it is not so hard.

Sorry, guys, I have bad news for you. It is another crap, even worse than 1920 Battle of Warsaw.

Life / Bishops defend Polish family [105]

it's not the philosophers that we're talking about here, it's the Catholic Church.

^ .. v ? ? ?

The Roman Catholic Church "Contemplative Life" comes from the Greek cynics. The whole concept that the material world doesn't matter.

So now you are talking of something different? And not saying cynic philosphy is where the Church got Contemplative Life? Or that the behavior, politics, philosphies and beliefs of cynics can be applied to even the most hypocrital and evil person calling themself Catholic (much less the main body of members)?I missed the memo. Pardon.

And quote me anywhere where I have put forth that none may have personal relationship with God EXCEPT for the Pope. Or Mentioned the Pope? You started out with general exaggerated statements and I provided more details.

You can be so familiar call me silly? Because the information provided shows your examples were not quite fitting? How forward and childish.

Yes it is obvious our viewpoints disagree..but ownership of one's opinion and familiarity of the counterpoints could make things where it informs instead of disinforms. And doesn't resort to name calling?

I should read the Bible? Really? My personal Bible is here at my desk near my bed. Where is yours located? It went to Kuwait with me, Panama, Somalia and many posts. It stayed in my left cargo pocket in protective cover. I read it once a week, sometimes more when I need strength. I am not a theologian. I cannot randomly quote a passage for every occasion. As to what Christianity means to YOU? it is not necessarily how it is defined by any Church, incl RC. christianity as set forth in Bible is MORE than about charity..and it has RULES. And Christ never said to throw away the Old Testament. Quite the opposite. I read ALL the New Testament..not just select pieces. To be general and paraphrasing; Matthew's Gospel is mostly of evangelism, for Levi the tax collector who called himself later Mattai was called to convert. He worked hardest as an educated convert to convert the Jews. And the article of faith concerning the Church on Matthew's lips: "Credo in sanctum, ecclesiam catholicam-I believe in the holy, Catholic Church." It is the only gospel having the the word "church" in it and it appears twice from the lips of Jesus. "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (16:18) and a Church that has the power to expel heretics from its midst (18:17). Jesus says that: "I have not come to abolish the law...but to fulfill it" (5:17). "Not everyone who says Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven. Only those who do the will of my Father" (7:21)."Whoever breaks the least of these commands and teaches others to do so, shall be called least in the kingdom of God" (5:19). (It is Paul that stressed acts of grace more and corporeal acts of mercy)

I do not think anywhere in Matthew does he say Christian "charity" trumps obedience. You may not agree with the Catholic Church as she is today. But any wrongdoing on her part does not allow for other wrongs

And guys? Isn't there ALREADY a thread to discuss the vagaries of "pedophiles" in churches? That arguement was brought up in a thread about the offcial view on traditional convervative values and stance on abortion? Really?

And what church has the most percentage? (um as compared to incidence in other positions of power over minors... schools, daycare, ozarks or Kansas?) And what about less sensationalized cases?

And one church "does it more" means what . 0_0 And the arguement itself is always brought up as a way to attack the Church in whole instead of condemming the abominable pervsions of individuals.

You are all so obsessed on that subject one would think it's a fetish! Unless the thread is about that subject it is very crass to bring it up as a foil to bolster personal opinon.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1303]

What do you know about lecho?

Lecho also yumm. Bell pepper, tomatoes, kielbasa, some boczek, spices... Good for winter! And Hungarian paprika-impotrant :)

Oh Yum That sounds like a Bohemian Basque dish my Baginski/Bagɲes family brought from Portugal ! tavă

Simply means literal grilled or skillet cooked. Main Ingredients are salway spicy Sausage,Bell Peppers, Peppers, Tomatoes, Onions, Garlic and usually a squash added last like zuccini or summer squash or Eggplant. Added spices are Paprika, Tarragon and Cilantro/chinese parsley and sea salt. Regionally add Mushrooms, Ham and fresh firm seafood. Usually langistino or prawn

After braising teh main ingredients and all meats; you add the tomatoes and remainder and simmer about 2 hours in iron skillet or pan (and in alternate last 30 minutes you add the soft vegetables during last 30 minutes). Eat over a sturdy fresh bread. Mmmmmmmm!

It will probably be in a reasonable distance of his hometown of Białystok.

While in the States I'll settle us in an area where his education will do him best.We figure it will be about 5 years to get the padding needed to purchase a suitable place, steady up after the move of such distance as a cushion for as we settle in

I myself am overeducated huntress and not City-oriented, so his plan is fine for me.

I go to exercise classes. I do not cook

Though the very few Polish in my acquaintance are "old Fashioned" I dont think it quite applies without details.

1) Are you on maternity leave from employ .... or UNemployed? were you full time before or part time?

A change in finances make eating out and having gym memberships is costly. WHO watches baby while you are at gym? Does it cost?

2) Is he working long hours? He is working LONGER hours to make up for your being out of circulation?

WHO is to clean? Babies SLEEP a lot just not very scheduled. You should be napping and catching up on household sanitation every time that lil creature closes it precious eyes. Modest cleaning IS part of taking car of your baby.

3) How much household chores did he have allocated before?

And as for not cooking.. is he expecting full traditional meals ?or something my 7 year old is capable of preparing?

It is hard to say if he is being an overbearing chavanist on what you say...

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

YAY! I am Westerner and I cook!
I got abt 6 recipes from ever grand /grt grand in families. (I had to cook -if dad was away mom was TERRIBLE cook and only cooked 4 things. Only thing she made I liked was liver.if that tells you anything. I learned to cook at age 5...in self defence!)

As well as some from in -laws (great chinse actually! My mum in law was born in Russian Enclave in Tietsien).
I can make Beof Wellington and chicken Kieve from scratch, I make pastry, pie, candies, fudges, divinities, pickles. all manner of Boheme, Basque, Portuguese, Spanish, Kosher, German and Scott dishes. I can roll sushi. I can make canapes all scratch. I can pat tortillas. I make cream sauces, chow chow, chutney, and salsas. I am a minor winemaker and have also brewed beer. I also know how to make shine. I prefer fruit to corn liquor. I also do a lot of Southern dishes (which are simply really imported German/Irish peasant food all fried).

I can't wait til I have a real kitchen again.... Mmmmmmmm!

Course when I cook only for me I am terrible(according to studies-I feel fine). I loooove butter. With everything. And true lard I use more often than Olive oil. Becuase flavor difference.

I fry my bacon in butter and what I dont saute' or braise in butter? I cook in the butter bacon grease.

An my physician in Army hated me because he has been to my house and KNEW what I ate. Nope I have LOW cholestrol.
Then and recent.. Bwahahha

On previous subject.... I have one man already claim I took his soul. But am redhead...it is in my job description. But would I make it so you don't miss it; does that call it even? I can feed him well too!

Life / Why is circumcision not practiced in Poland? [701]

So seeing responses; maybe question should be why is it practised across the board in North America?

honestly didnt know there was circumsision and no circumcision i thought all penises looked like a circumsized one

Of course, being American AND Catholic, I have not seen..um much up close. But what I did was bare.

My boys were circumcised at suggestion of physician and pref of the father.
Since I am not a Jew or Muslim there is no religious reason for me. I actually disliked it so much for my first son , I wasn't sure I wanted it for my youngest. I know there are some health issues that are more on women than men (chlamydia and yeast constant.but those stats are for ...well.... for people who eat a little of EVERY thing at the buffet. I lean to long term monogomous. But former have been unfaithful so I am kinda glad they were clipped.)

Here where I am, it is simply something that is done like the blood tests, tons of vaccines, assuming bottle feeding.

This thread freaked me out........

Since so many who post here, specially male are not actually Polish nationals, I wasn't sure what to think.
So I asked my BBF in the world in Germany (who is 1/2 Polish traditional & yes we are THAT close), But he is American and born here. So I decide ask someone that might have a handle on the question.

I then ask a close EU friend (in what she calls my sudden Aspie way- I am Aspie) "Is it true most don't do in the EU". I swear she stays friends for the amusement value. She said I must come to Helsinki so she can educate me, because I need help. ^_^ So she informs me that majority across the pond, are whole.

....meanwhile even as I finish speaking to her, my paramour is online and in view, asking why I am acting so strange..I blurt it out "..is it true?! are You?"

*sigh* I swear one of us turns the other red for a week on a monthly basis now. I am glad we were (he said our level of friendship before he loved me was " przyjaciel"?) trolly best buds or we could never say and ask these things of each other.

Well that is one potential shock/surprise neutralized.

You guys are killing me!
seems this forum always brings me more questions than answers. I never did ask the question that brought me here.

That's Romanian ţuică stuff, right? In Polish transliteration it would look like: cuika, or cłika. This T up front is confusing, because it is T with cedilla.

Cherokee has ts/tsi/tso as s/si/so. It sounds harder.. so I spelt it tz, I couldn't get it to correct phonetically. I never saw it written just heard what it was. And it was said to be Romanian

As I was told, my friend's mother used to produce her booze in the most primitive still ever, made of: "..."

Wow. 0_o I bet you clean carburetors with that!

OoooooooH ! I looove that site! I stumbled on it looking for Fleisch.
Article may not be interesting but the food sure is exciting!

It maybe simplistic because they have English version and Polish of each page?

You been eating in wrong kitchens!

I've found Polish food fairly basic stodge

With all the smoked, pickled items and the sausages added in recipes?
and onions and love for spices..specially proper paprika. I've always though german and polish sausages more flavorful than Bohemian and much better than Anglo versions. Sooo many kinds!

And mushrooms...mmmmmm!

Pierogi. Why on earth boil pastry? It's just wrong!

That is Ruski styled. And you don't eat tortellini or wontons either do you

Polish make them like Bohemes, sauteed in butter topped with fried onions or garlic butted and filled with cabbage with sausage. And my BF says also fruit little little turnovers (I have to try that!). Rus use potatoes kinda plain but if like Bohem then it would be potatoe and strong cheese.

And "omlette" to them is ..YUM! Blintzes!
Dang..now I m hungry!
