Life / "Whiskification" of Poland? [32]

And Japanese, Canadians, Americans, Poles, Indians..

All copies of something that originated in Scotland and Ireland

it's still a traditional British drink.

It's not Anglo Saxon though is it?

Life / "Whiskification" of Poland? [32]

I'm half Scots half English, and I've honestly never felt there's much difference.

how can there be no difference when there's no such thing as English whisky? Only Scots and Irish make whisky, it's just not an English thing

Life / "Whiskification" of Poland? [32]

Pretty much the same. A Martian wouldn't see a difference and anyone who would get worked up about it should find a nice hobby instead.

pretty much not the same at all

News / Polish journalist charged with insulting Belarusian President [16]

Here is a link to the story of the farting Pole...

Police hunt farting dissident

Police in Poland have launched a nationwide hunt for a man who farted loudly when asked what he thought of the president.

Instead the court ordered the police to start a nationwide hunt for the man, and interpol have been alerted.

I suppose the police will be using sniffer dogs to find him

Life / Girls in Poland shaving side of head!? [30]

It is "popular" the way that 1 in a 100 teenage girls/young women has it.

It went out of fashion here about 20 years ago, it was called an undercut

News / Poles -- Europe's very best? [21]

Where do they find these people to answer the questions? I've never been interviewed for a poll and no one I know has ever been interviewed for a poll

News / 9 year old Polish girl and 10 year old brother killed by World War II bomb [46]

How long would you want to keep the hatred going , fifty years , a hundred , maybe a thousand....?

Don't even bother to ask.......a UXB was found near to where I used to live, we were evacuated from our houses for three days, while the army came in to make it safe and remove it. The best of it was, the damned thing was underneath the local football pitch, which was also used for local fairs, with hundreds of people running and trampling all over it.....I'm sure there are plenty of UXBs yet to be discovered in Germany as well.

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

I wouldn't worry about it - the English have insults for everyone! ; )

That's because everyone has insults for the English

What's with this Polish chaos?

Why not stereotype Ukrainian or Russian chaos?

Because Poland is nearer.
When I was a kid visiting my grandparents and my cousins were there and we were all fighting and making a noise, my Granddad would say "it's like a bloody Irish parliament in here" meaning a lot of shouting and arguing but no one listening. If you look at the trend here, it's the neighbouring countries that get quotes about them

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

Never heard that one - are you sure??

yes, I've heard it used in that context by members of my own family, if a woman was with a man who was suspected of not being her child's father, he was referred to as a 'Dutch uncle'

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

English lacks such references to Poles, but it does contain the notion of getting gypped (from Gypsy) or to jewing someone down (haggling to pay a lower price)

Never heard of either, I take it you're in America?

Also Dutch courage

Dutch courage refers to drinking gin for courage, gin originating in Holland

Dutch uncle

a Dutch uncle is a man you call uncle but isn't related, usually used to refer to a man your mother is having an affair with.

History / How much Poles trust to France? [93]

Poles don't believe in Polish-French friendship, Crow. All they believe in is the Polish-Serbian friendship.

It's looking serious.........I think Crow may now have developed multiple personality disorder :(

UK, Ireland / A Mexican-Polish citizen is moving to UK by summer 2011 [38]

Its our UK benefit system, its not for lazy as$ Poles that know every trick in the book to come over and abuse

To be fair, it's not just Poles, it's the whole bloody world, they're coming from all corners of the globe to abuse the system. A lot of Poles work and pay taxes here, I'm sure they are equally pissed off with their countrymen abusing the system, especially as we are suffering huge cuts to pay for this abuse. we are getting worse from other countries.

It actually make you a dog, I refuse to be a dog and growl at the dogs from a neighbourhood because they pick few of my master leftover !
He doesn't care.

First they are not leftovers, secondly they were paid for from the taxes of the British workers. The country now has a huge deficit because of all these generous welfare payments, the country is broke and people are losing jobs because of it. There will be fewer tax payers to fund the benefit cheats.

The whole point of the welfare state was, you paid in while you were fit and able and in work, to pay for a safety net for any time in the future you were unable to support yourself. Now it's being abused by people who have never paid in and they're too thick to realise that the cash cow is about to die because of it.

If you took out an insurance against unemployment, would you allow someone who has never bothered to pay into an insurance scheme to claim off of your insurance?

Off-Topic / How would Poles react to a visit from Queen Elizabeth? [72]

Coat trailing about the destruction of the Irish language, laws and society is highly offensive and a lot more complicated than The Irish preferred to speak English or The Irish preferred to be ruled by the Normans.

No one here is speaking the true English language, the Normans banned English from being spoken, but it survived among the peasant community, when Norman French was dropped in favour of middle English, it had become unrecognisable from old English. a lot of old English words have survived in rural dialects, these are regarded as slang. How We'd Talk If The English Had Won in 1066.

Isn't it amazing how donations to Noraid went down after 9/11?

I imagine some Poles will see a Royal visit as a bit of a novelty and may go and have a look out of curiosity, but this would probably be older people and children. I doubt the rest will even notice.

History / Slavic vs Germanic thinking.... and the philosophical differences [251]

General passivity as a feature is what you describe as lack of expressed will

It's the quiet ones you have to watch ;)

I was watching the reaction of one Danish couple on the beach while they were observing ordinary Serbian kid routinely ruining his toy

You get spoilt brats in all countries. If the mother had asked for my help, my answer would be "he broke it, he can look for it, maybe he won't break his toys next time" to quote my father "the mother spoils them, then every other mother's child has to suffer them"
