UK, Ireland / I need help!! (problems with my Polish coworkers) [41]

You're toast, there's nothing you can do. Let go and move on and find another job. Maybe work for yourself, get ahold of a food cart and sell sandwiches on the street corner.

UK, Ireland / Cultural misunderstandings - Polish and English [26]

"Go fast" is just doing everything as fast as possible, no patience for anything, don't stop for anything ever, just go, no need for safety gear, don't bother with glasses/goggles etc.

Poles are impatient.

Law / Poland on its way to Greece? [64]

Sorry, but Poland's choice in the long run is to repeal the Treaty or join the Euro.

If it was up to me (of course which it isn't) I'd vote for repeal. As for the the money Poland has received from the Euro zone just consider it war reparations. If Poland accepts the Euro they'll become another Ireland.

Seanus,

Chicago Pol? Materialism is not so intertwined with religion IMHO. Again, a simple label slap with no real rational thought behind it.

Roman Church preaches anti-materialistic message but Vatican walls are encased in Gold. Material wealth is morally neutral.

Travel / Would Polish visit Greece for it's islands or for it's history ? [30]

I just came back from Greece, it was wonderful. The Greek people are very nice, outgoing and pleasant. Rude? I never met a rude Greek. I've been to the Islands and the mainland and there was plenty to do there. Plenty of beaches, lots of historical stuff. If I lived in Europe Greece would be a must see every year.

Law / Poland on its way to Greece? [64]

They have it bad because they gave up their currency for the Euro which is really the German Mark. The Euro is much stronger of a currency than their economies can support.

Law / Poland on its way to Greece? [64]

Materialism is overrated? Spoken like a true Catholic. Roman pagan hogwash. But getting back to the point, Poland won't go the way of Greece as long as they keep the zloty. If things get bad they can do what Iceland did and reflate their currency. If they give up the zloty for the Euro they need their heads examined. Give up your currency, give up your sovereignty.

USA, Canada / Moving from United Kingdom to USA. Is it worth it? [136]

Hi. I've been working in London for the last six years as an electrical estimator for an electrical contractor. My permament job is perfect and I have no doubt about it but there is a housing problem in London.

Canada is economically doing better than the states due to oil. Canada exports the stuff. Only drawback is brutal and long winters. Weather wise Western Canada would be my choice, Calgary and all points West.

Working in the States? Well being an electrical contractor you can forget California, Florida, Arizona, Nevada. If you're Polish speaking Chicago may work, but Texas and the Plains States have better economies. North Dakota oil fields are booming, probably your best shot but weather is Canadian-like. Contact State of North Dakota Job Service Center. You can get them on the net, here: jobsnd.com

Love / Advice on a Polish girlfriend who suddenly stopped contact. [32]

Im an English guy. I was dating a polish girl for about 3months. And I've never dated somebody so beautiful and down to earth. I would definitely choose polish women over english any day.

Stick to English Women. They can cook, they have a sense of humor and they're honest. What more do you want?

Love / Is the Polish wife the boss? [33]

Bill Cosby, the well-known Afro-American comedian, once said in one of his famous one-liners: The basic thing about marriage everyone should know is that the woman's the boss!

That's because in America it's a matriarchy, regardless of nationality, certainly by the second generation.

In Europe it's the guys who wear the pants, hands down. Guy says jump and lady says how high.

Real Estate / WOODEN HUNTERS TOWERS ON MY LAND in POLAND.....is it legal....? [59]

I'm curious. Here in New Jersey it's illegal(I know, I know it's done anyway) to hunt at night especially with lights, that blind the deer. Does the same hold true in Poland?

Hunting at night? Not likely, too dangerous.

Law / Those of us in Sterling GBP are having our backsides kicked [35]

Greece would benefit greatly from a devaluation right now, unfortunately they gave up that option when they switched to the Euro.

True, Greece gave up it's sovereignty when it joined the Euro.

The US on the other hand is double punishing itself each time we print extra money as "cheapening" of the dollar means more expensive commodity prices.

Inflation of commodities helps America because that's one of the few things that we export. That's why the ag sector has been doing so well, additionally Inflation acts as a tariff on imported goods thus manufacturing moves here.

We tend to blame the Chinese no matter what they do but the truth is that their economy is more capitalistic than most western nations, including the US.

It depends how you define capitalism, but China runs a very top down Communist-corporate structure.

As far as a peg to the dollar, the Chinese yuan is NOT pegged to the dollar but rather to a "secret ratio" of several currencies where the dollar and the euro are the largest "ingredients" but many other currencies are part of it too.

It's still pegged and doesn't float.

Japanese yen.

You're showing me a 60 year chart, of course the values are going to change. Japan was devastated after WWII. The Japanese are terrified of a yen stronger than 80 because ... guess what? They lose their export markets.

We have two choices, if you want a strong currency than you have to have tariffs. If no tariffs than our country needs a weak currency.

Chicago P - let's agree to disagree and even better how about you and GW sign a 4th of July peace treaty?? :-))

A country can't maintain a strong currency when they outsource their manufacturing overseas. You have to produce something. A weak currency will attract investment. It's how the Chinese did it. They pegged their currency to the dollar.

Japanese Yen is very strong and has been growing stronger since 2002

80 to the dollar isn't my idea of strong.

News / Citizen-led Initiative on Abortion Law in Poland [50]

It's not about abortion in general, it's about extending the ban to the situations

Why shouldn't it be abortion in general? If abortion is such a heinous sin why isn't it mentioned in the Bible? The fact is the Roman Catholic Church uses the abortion issue solely as a wedge issue to divide the American people politically. Standard Operating Procedure for the Roman Catholic Church, masters at Political Deception. If the Polish People knew of the extent of the Roman Church's involvement with the Nazi regime in the 1930's and 40's the Polish People wouldn't be "So Catholic".

It's called Obanomics, print A LOT of new money, use fancy words for creating inflation such as "quantitive easing" and hope that the Zimbabwean dollar drops in value faster than your own currency.

No, it's called debauching the currency with conducting unnecessary wars in third world backwaters like Afghanistan and Iraq and outsourcing manufacturing that is the reason for the weakness of the currency. The dollar is still way over valued.

History / Poland and Orientalism [115]

Although Poland is now independent we on this forum still see Orientalism quite often in the content of posters from the West who portray Poles as a backwards folk.

This post is a poor analogy. Historically Poland has always looked West not East. Poland may well be the Easternmost Western European Country. Poland Romanticized it's alphabet (it used to be Cyrillic, like the Russians), It embraced the Roman Church. The early Kings of Poland wanted Poland to be West, not East.

Life / Uptight Poles [262]

If Poland wasn't so devoutly Catholic, they may not have been invaded at all. The invasions didn't happen in a vacuum. Roman Catholicism emphasizes sacrifice and suffering. It cherishes quiet contemplation and believes that the material world has no value so that one attains virtue through poverty. In the devout Roman Catholic world civil law (if it exists) is subservient to Church law. The individual and his relationship to God is supreme, no room for the community here.

Should be in both. Actually if you watch this series (which incidentally comes from Vatican documents) and fast forward to the 1930's fascist movement, it makes perfect sense (i.e., the 1930's fascist movement was the 20th century version of the Inquisition).

Life / Uptight Poles [262]

Be that as it may....outside of the Vatican, The Catholic Church has played a very important part in Poland's history. If it were not for the Catholic faith, it may not have been possible for Poland to be Poland after the Partitions.

Here, check out the full story of the Catholic Church's history:

Life / Uptight Poles [262]

The English and other Protestant European countries are anti-Catholic due to the politics of the Roman Catholic Church which they are very aware of. For instance during the Spanish Civil War (1930's) approximately 5000 priests and nuns were killed because they constituted the fascists fifth column. The Roman Catholic Church was heavily involved with Mussolini and Hitler and were responsible for the harsh treatment of the Poles by the Nazi's during WWII. If Poles knew of the full involvement by the Church in WWII they wouldn't be so Catholic.

Life / Uptight Poles [262]

Polish people are abrupt and ill mannered (rude) and they look like they're angry all the time. But that's who they are. It's the culture. It's what makes a Pole a Pole. Probably due to all the invasions throughout their history. Can't relax, you'll never know who's over the hill ready to invade.
