History / 'Poland: A Knight Among Nations' - Book about Poland by an American Author, dated 1907 [51]

Wow! I mean...wow! you most certainly are a "pollack" polak...

From the book:

"Ancient Poland had no middle class, no bourgeoisie, A class so necessary for the perpetuity of a nation. It was in consequence of this inequality in the national character, and as a result of certain fatal diplomatic mistakes, and a false political method, that Poland was reduced to a state of internal anarchy in the 18th Century. She then easily fell a prey to the three neighboring monarchies."

Life / Bringing my best American friend to Poland. [7]

I found a list of "problems" that kinda rain on my parade.

Let things happen. Spontaneity is always more fun.

Ohh yeh just be sure to tell your mate not to run around shouting his mouth off like many Americans do when abroad.

Be yourselves. Americans are loud. It's what the Euros expect, don't disappoint them.

Work / Opus Dei opens school in Warsaw [21]

Roman Catholic Church is a highly politicized institution. Religion is just used as a front for their political activity. Wasn't Pope Pius XII or was it the XI kicked out of Poland in 1925 for political meddling? (It was the WWII pope).

In 1930's Spain Opus Dei was involved in the Spanish Civil War and took the side of the Franco's fascists.

News / Potheads attack police in Warsaw [40]

but it has been studied just seems that the studies don't fit into all the righteous drunk's idea of what they think mj is so those studies are discounted..

Nothing has been studied as much as tobacco. MJ is not in as widespread use as tobacco. Studies and effects just haven't been done.

mj has a fraction of the poisonous chemicals that cigarettes do..
etc.. it's not even close to the kind of poison alcohol or tobacco are

From the mouths of babes. You don't know what's in mj that you get on the street.

mj is not addictive..

From my personal experience when mj was much more common than it is now, I disagree. Yes, it is addictive. Most if not all drugs are.

Let's not lose our heads here. It's just marihuana and what does it matter if they want to smoke a joint? It really doesn't. I've never seen sb who was stoned start fights, like ppl who are drunk do.

That's because marijuana is much more of a depressant than alcohol.

actually tobacco is more dangerous then mj

Don't know. Mj isn't in widespread use as tobacco and hasn't been studied as much. Also it's hard for me to believe that when smoking maryjane you hold it in your lungs and that doesn't have a detrimental effect on your lungs.

News / Warsaw a "big winner" in city life quality index [26]

I don't trust this ranking Krakow, Wroclaw and Poznan do not make it into the top 50 BUT CHICAGO DOES!!

Of course it ranks in the top 50! Why do you think that more Ex-Poles live in Chicago than any other city outside of Warsaw??

Life / Poland's population predictions [59]

According to the 2002 Polish census there were 1,541 "ethnic Americans" living in Poland. Another website, refering to the same 2002 census, puts the total number of US Citizens living in Poland at about 30,000 dual US-Polish citizens, and 1000 US Citizens.

I'm sure most Americans living in Poland are Ex-Pat Poles who've managed to get an American Passport.

News / Komorowski for complex-ridden Poles? [94]

Seanus

I played football today and stormed off the pitch due to their lack of heart. Some young here just lack passion, like their souls have been crushed

Poles who live in the States are highly competitive and motivated.

I encourage people to listen to Peter Schiff on how business has been stifled.

Peter Schiff is an idiot. The guy lives in La La land. American business has been stifled? Gee, how so? Quite the contrary, they've gone berserk. All they've done, since The Bush family have risen to political power, is lower our wages with illegal immigration and cheap Chinese imports. What we have in the US is crony capitalism.

Whats the skinny on Linux? I'm on Slackware's mailing list but I haven't had time lately to fool around and load it up.

Is Linux virus proof?

I use lots of engineering apps, where is Linux on Cad programs?

What about Windows Emulators?

Interesting post. IMHO Poland needs to look inward. It spends too much time looking to other countries for it's solutions. Poland needs to depend on Poland.

Travel / How much money do I need to travel to Poland from Argentina? [9]

My two cents...but when I travel overseas I find it's best to use credit cards as they make the currency conversion for you. Keep track of your purchases and you will be able to budget your money.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

[quote]I live in Poland and I've never heard any anti geraman or anti russian joke. In the other hand I think we are the only nation in the world to talk jokes about themselves... but polish jokes about polishmen are funny and really inteligent

Norwegians are worse than Poles when it comes to jokes about themselves. They're referred to as "ole and lena" jokes. The theme is a dumb Norwegian couple.

The movie "Fargo" is one big Norwegian joke.

Some of you poles are much too sensitive.

News / "POLISH death camps" term used by "Parade Magazine" Anti-Polish Bigots [249]

there is no anti Polish bigotry in the United States. Most Americans don't know what a Pole is other than something to hang a flag on. Once Poles learn to speak fluent English, they melt into the general population (Nobody ever asks me what nationality my last name is, never).

The only time that a Pole with confront Polish jokes is from other Poles. There are 10 million Poles living in the US of A and if the society was discriminatory, they would have left a long time ago.

Love / Are Polish still very traditional when it comes to relationships? [31]

Izvirai

and whilst it doesn't bother him at all, he did say that its something his family will probably strongly disapprove of once they know how serious our relationship is and that we are planning a future together

Polish families have a lot of say so in everyday affairs. They're a PITA (painintheass). Steer clear and you'll be fine.

Salvation through suffering,

that's a Roman Catholic thingy. It's salvation through faith and charity. Unfortunately the Protestant Reformation didn't make it to Poland.

I do understand why some women get all emotional and fluffy when you declare your love to her infront of the community though. It means you're showing the whole world you're her guy and her guy alone. I get that. But with all these rules and financial agreements it feels like a form of control to me. Perhaps even a sign of distrust? The most important thing to me is equality, and I really can't see how a man and a woman are equals within the institute that's called marriage.

Marriage is a civil contract. I know this is going to be hard for modern women to swallow but because women are the child bearers they are at a disadvantage and need to be protected through contract law. the marriage contract was originally designed to keep the guy from "buggering off" after having a slew of kids and leaving the burden of family support to the local community. It's in your favor, ladies.

says that you'll love her forever. Noone can promise this.

Nonsense, of course they can. think commitment. Next time get a marriage contract, FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

that is true, but I have noticed that good men are not comfortable when their gf or wife makes more money than they do. The users, yes, they have no problem with it, but most men prefer to be the main bread winners.

Complete and utter nonsense. Guys are interested in good cooking and sex. It's the women who are interested in how much a guy makes. that's a women thingy. That's why so many successful women don't get married, they constantly compare their earnings with their husbands (Poor b*stards, don't have a chance).

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

My sister is one of those people - she can't speak a word of the language, has nothing to do with Poles except for close family, despises Polish people generally, and calls herself "English".

She knows herself. Good for her.

I never call myself English

Why??? If you think this way than you should move to Poland and embrace all things Polish. Why are you staying in England?

What do the Nazi's know? Why are they the authorities when it comes to ethnicity/nationality? Actually your line of thinking does have more in common with the Nazi's.

When one studies the migration of humankind there are no pure races. Poland is full of mutts: Swedish invasions, German invasions, Mongol invasions, Russian invasions, etc. etc.

Pure bred Polish? What's that??

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

BS

My family has been in America since before 1900 and haven't been back. When do I become American? How long do I perpetuate the myth of ethnicity? I mean where did the Poles originally come from? Central Asia?

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

the truth is that your ethnic identity is something that is really up to you. There is no template on who is Polish or not. It still amazes me that some people would want to try to set some standards as to what it means to be Polish, Irish and so on. It sounds like a dictatorship to me and I always find it puzzling.

If you live in Ireland or Poland you're Irish or Polish. If you live in America you're American. If you live in America your heritage is American. If you live in America and think that you are Irish or Polish, move to Ireland or Poland. Be true to yourself. Simple.

News / The EU's 1 Trillion Dollar Rescue Package [144]

It works like this. Some brainiac professor (about 30 years ago) teaching MBA courses thought up the idea that corporations can increase profitability by cutting labor costs. So they focused on importing Chinese stuff and cut domestic labor costs further by employing illegal immigrants.

What this does in the long run is that it destroys the corporation's market. If labor costs are cut across the board, no one has the money to buy the products or services that the corporation is providing. So the only way the corporation can maintain profitability is for the government to lower interest rates and provide "cheap credit". This is why the governments' balance sheets are in such disarray. No one can afford to buy anything. No purchases, no taxes. Germany isn't bailing out Greece, they're bailing out the entire financial system. We're going to have to maintain cheap money until we start manufacturing our own stuff and paying higher wages. We have no other choice.

Language / Ski Or Ska? - Polish surname endings [44]

Lina19

In the states you can do anything in regards to your married name. You can:

Keep your maiden name

Combine your maiden and married name together with an hyphen

spell your husbands name with a ska

Have you and your husband combine your last names into one.

I've seen all of the above. This is America man.

News / 1945-2010 Poles will march on Red square [66]

Reading these posts it appears that the Poles are much more forgiving to the Russians than you are to the Germans. But when one looks at history, the Russians can be just as brutal as the Germans (ex.Katyrn Forest (Sp?)., attacking Polish forces while they were being attacked by Germany, they partitioned your country in cooperation with the Germans, etc.) Why?

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

Polish jokes originated with Polish-Americans poking fun at newly arrived Polish immigrants. It didn't start with NBC or Jews or what have you.

All ethnic groups in the US have done the same thing. It's an immigrant thingy. Actually the Norwegians are worse than the poles. You can still buy Norwegian joke books in the book stores.

I haven't heard Polish jokes since the 1960's but if they are starting up again it's because the Poles are still immigrating to the U.S. I don't hear Irish or Italian jokes because those nationalities are not immigrating to the U.S. BTW Jewish jokes were quite popular on American television in the 1960's. There aren't any Black jokes because Blacks can't laugh at themselves. Redneck jokes come from the American South and are told by Southerners (Jeff Foxworthy).

Polish jokes are kinda like an inside joke among Poles. Get it?

Love / Fell in love with a Polish girl, but find it difficult to approach her [620]

A Guy's opinion

Could he really be in love, or is it just enthusiasm? How much time should I give him, should I message him or let him miss me? Should I just give up and go on with my life if he does nothing in a week, or fight for him?

A Guy's opinionYou don't know.

Don't message. The ball is in his court.

Move on. I would start dating other people. He may have a change of heart in the future, but at this stage you have nothing to lose by dating again.

Love / Are the Polish the most suspicious people in Europe? [73]

I was raised in Little Poland Chicago. My folks were suspicious of everybody including the neighbors. I finally went away to school in bumf*ck, USA and found the American people open and candid. They trust everybody. I had to learn to not be sooooo suspicious (ya know imagination can get away from a guy). But the answer is somewhere in the middle. Some suspicion is okay, just don't over do it.

Our friend here form bumblefack Spain is upset because his polish girlfriend dumped his as$ on suspicion of him cheating on her.

Being Spanish, he probably was. He didn't stand a chance with that super sleuth Polish Chick.

Havok, that's the problem with Polish People. Maybe that's why they've been invaded and occupied for the past two hundred years. No trust, no political consensus. You know that old adage, "Divide and conquer".

Genealogy / The last name is Krzywoszyja. Help? Am I Polish? [30]

Racist is an often misused term on this board. Racist means that a person believes that he or she is superior to another solely due to their race. A Caucasian cannot be racist towards another Caucasian.

History / The Polish Blame Culture! [330]

Sokrates, in other posts about this subject I've read where you've mentioned that Poland military leadership didn't coordinate it's units, that they didn't conduct wargames, etc. Why is that? How could Poland be so competent against Bolsheviks and so incompetent against Germany 20 years later? There is a reason for their incompetence. These are the questions that Poles should be asking.
