History / How Polish history is viewed by other countries textbooks [124]

Well, I am not that young to quote books I had studied many years ago. But I perfectly remember that even by the time I left school, I left it in 1993, all textbooks had clearly

I must say Costa, really do find that surprising:)

History / What do Polish people think about Belorussians? [38]

On a personal level i feel sorry for the people of Belarus having to be in the hands of the last dictator of Europe, and i cannot wait for the day when democracy comes to your country. when this happens I am sure that Poland and Belarus will have fantastic business relations:)

I believe that there is a radio station in Poland, partly sponsored by the foreign office that broadcasts into Belarus, telling the people the true state of affairs in your country. This makes the Polish leadership decidedly unpopular with your president:)

Life / Poland's population predictions [59]

Hi All. Just wandering about the amount of Poles of foreign extraction that reside in the country. Since i don't live in the country myself, i would like to get predictions from those that do or have a reasonably good idea.

So the following totals please.

Brits?:

Germans (not those that have been here since WWII)?:

Irish?:

Americans?:

Australians?:

And any other nationality you can think of:)

And if you could make a future estimate, that would be interesting as well, say up to the year 2025.

Life / Poland's population predictions [59]

i found only some statistics from 2009...

Interesting, although that is not a lot of info. According to that the highest number of registered working foreigners in Poland are from the Ukraine, 3500. Does not sound terribly accurate in terms overall population though.

Travel / Anything and Everything worthwhile about Warsaw to share [23]

but the new democratic Poland missed a trick in not downing that Soviet layered cake montrosity and also not investing in logical public infrastructure like a new and safe central railway station for starters.

Mmm, let me think why not. Probably because it cost a **** load of money which a country that saw a 1/5 of its economy disappear overnight did not have.

hague1cmaeron if you want to work in Poland you are always welcome.

I fear that my qualifications are of a type that are not readily convertible to anything of a practical nature:)

According to BBC's Brits Abroad section, there are around 6.000 UK nationals in PL

hague1cmaeron if you want to work in Poland you are always welcome.

Fantastic that is the type of thing i was after, well done that was brilliant.

History / What do Polish people think about Belorussians? [38]

What is the background for such a poor state of affairs between us in your understanding? Really interested in your view. Feel free to pm in Russian/Belorussian if needed (don't speak the last one but will take pains to understand).

You don't have to be a fcuking genius to find out, the Russians were always in favor of dictatorial rule in Belarus which is not what the ordinary people want in Belarus. If it would not be for Russian meddling, the people of Belarus would be free today.

There is DW short documentary on Belarus.

If you scroll down the page and look to the right hand corner you should find it.

I can hardly believe it, but i understand almost everything on this clip below:)

I did not realize that there are so many similarities between Polish and Belorussian, it almost seems closer to Polish than Russian:)

News / Warsaw a "big winner" in city life quality index [26]

Warsaw ranks 84th out of 221 cities in a world 'Quality of living' index by the Mercer advisory company.

I don't trust this ranking Krakow, Wroclaw and Poznan do not make it into the top 50 BUT CHICAGO DOES!!

History / What do Polish people think about Belorussians? [38]

Besides Lukashenko is obviously not a Russian agent on throne. He has his own agenda.

Would you care to explain why he calls himself Russia's best friend, and he considers Russia as his best friend?

A groundless statement on your part. The history doesn't know the conjunctive mood. Besides Lukashenko is obviously not a Russian agent on throne. He has his own agenda.

Hardly if the west did anything to remove him and give the people of Belarus their freedom, then the Russians from some strange and over mighty sense of self importance would go ape ****. Because Russia's prestige comes before human rights and always has.

Work / What jobs pay 10,000 zlotych per month? and Where can i find one? :o) [101]

Well unlike MOST high earning countries, the Poles by and large live within their means and NOT on the credit card, and contrary to popular perception they are doing just fine considering that home ownership is some 2% higher than in a country like the UK.

Love / Can 'engaged' soon to marry Polish men say I love you to their female friend? [62]

give password to the email account that has proofs of adultery on it.

That is going a bit far, it could quire conceivably be platonic in nature.

Besides were is this friend of his, is she is in another country? I would suggest to you that this might be a bit of a storm in a teacup if she is not even in the same country. You would be the best placed know if what he says is accurate in any case.

Love / Inside polish women's psychology and mind [109]

I'd say that many Polish women do indeed want to have children. Those that don't likely fear commitment or circumstances don't permit it. There can be a host of reasons. Still, I admire those that take the plunge and increase the number of young people here. There are too many old foglets. Not on the scale of Japan, no, but heading in that direction :(

I though that Poland had one of the youngest populations in Europe, did i hear wrong?

Now that I take a second look at the cartoon above in the light of your comment, it could quite conceivably be true in your case.

History / Questions about Polish borders, Galicia and Cossacks. [50]

Galicia was always predominantly Ukrainian-a people who until very recently did not identify themselves with a nation state, the word Ukraina is a Polish word meaning borderland, or on the edge. The Poles in the Ukraine mainly consisted of the landed gentry and town folk. The Ukrainians predominately consisted of serfs and peasants.

Poland is a smaller country now because of internal politics, ravenous upstart countries like Prussia and Russia, all the different wars, and a recent urge for independence by countries like the Ukraine and Belarus. And a general combination of these things over a long period of time.

Polish Cossacks are essentially Ukrainian cossacks who fought for Poland, they were very fickle, they essentially sold their services to the highest bidder regardless of nationality.

Genealogy / Any Polish Tatars here? [95]

Minimal, their invasion was predominantly confined to southern Poland and their army was relatively small. Poland at the time was formed from disjointed regions who initially did not present a united front.

Poland was a sideshow to the main invasion of Hungary, which was just as well from Poland's point of view. The towns that were destroyed at the time were quite small and so relatively easy to rebuild, including Krakow.

It would be very hard to tell, but given that the Polish interaction with the tartars continued long after the invasion, as many of them served in the Polish army, there is an undoubted connection. I suppose it would be quite a bit smaller than the present interaction of Brits with Brits of Afro-Caribbean descent or Brits descendant from the subcontinent.

Genealogy / Polish looks? [1462]

Here is a sample population of Poles, i think it is reasonably indicative, there is a lot of them as they are on parade, mostly army types, but there are quite a few civilians as well.

UK, Ireland / The number of Anti-English Poles... [228]

I get the feeling that Brits especially don't understand the Polish system too well of needing to have ZUS paid to access healthcare - they know the UK system of universal insurance and assume that it works like that here, too.

It is time to learn than that there is no such thing as a free lunch, as the nation of Adam smith should know, but apparently does not, very well:)

When William Beveridge laid out his blueprint for the modern British welfare state in 1942, his goal was the "abolition of want.".

Sounds like the gospel truth, laziness is a mortal sin, what has happened to this so called protestant work ethic? It has become a quaint memory, a bit like the British Empire. And Britain after another period of labour misrule is once again the sick man of Europe! Even the Italians for all their shambolic administrative and political systems has a higher standard of living and a larger economy than Britain. It is hard to believe that even though they have less people their economy is larger! Ideally a final solution should be found for Britain's work shy. But watch this space, the new welfare minister is Ian Duncan Smith, watch the dumb regional idiots protest as lays down the law.
