Life / Don't Forget: Tomorrow, March 8 is Women's Day in Poland! [115]

who don't normally do anything for their women

Wow, you're right. Buying flowers and some cheap present, not getting drunk again in front of the TV that night and "doing something" with the spouse certainly makes up for 364 days of neglect, abuse, and indifference.

Life / The "I am never wrong" phenom - is it the Polish thing? [63]

I'm sure there are many Poles living in England who would say the same thing about 'us'. Not sure if they moan about it on forums though.

Oh they do, they do Mr. "TommyG". How else could we moan about the moaners moaning about moaners.

He apologized profusely and is giving me a free lamp valued at 450pln

pip, welcome to reality. He is not giving you a "free lamp valued at 450 zl". He's giving you a lamp he got for free which you thought was worth 450zl.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

It'll hit 14% by April but then drop to 13% again during the summer season and then rise up to 15 or 16% come November.

It's like saying Poland had tanks to face the Germans in 1939

It's like saying Germany had a bunch of tanks in 1939 though. Not talking about misconceived stereotypes, but the general frame of reference.

Language / Polish slang phrases - most popular. [606]

If in formal situations you say do widzenia.
If you're talking with friends you say na razie.

And that's called register. Duh.

Other informal substitutes for "na razie": trzymaj sie, pa, hej, zdrowko, hejka, do zobaczyska, nara, narka, do zoba, spierdalam

"dresiarz"

Not quite. But close.

No,I didn't.

Yes, you did.

The casual form of "do widzenia" is "na razie" as well as "cześć".

That's correct. Register is important. You cannot substitute "na razie" for "do widzenia" and vice-versa.

Law / Buying from Allegro using PayU or Paypal and paying for item [18]

Metoda płatności Zwykły przelew
Payment method: Standard bank transfer

You need to select PayU somehow, as I see you already have the PayU account set up. Or again, give it a rest and have them send it to you COD.

Law / Buying from Allegro using PayU or Paypal and paying for item [18]

In Moje Allegro, Moje Zakupy, Kupione, you'll find what you bought and to the right of the item Opcje. Click on that and then on Place. Select the shipping method, confirm if everything is right and click Plac or something, it should take you to your bank account login page, login, the bank transfer info has already been completed, you just need to confirm it by entering your password or sms token, whichever you use. That's it. You should get three emails from Allegro, one where you chose how to pay for the item, the second that you chose PayU and the third that you actually paid.

Przesylka kurierska is your standard 24h courier like UPS, DHL, DPD... Przesylka kurierska pobraniowa is Cash on Delivery where you pay the driver, if you want to save yourself the hassle choose that option.

Life / The "I am never wrong" phenom - is it the Polish thing? [63]

Making something that is your fault -somebody elses fault.

I wouldn't say it applies only to Poles, but the level of hypocrisy and pigheadedness that Poles live in is quite astounding. I too have a million different examples but what's the point, welcome to Poland, "kraj burakow gdzie sloma z buta wstaje"

When you pay using PayU you still go through your bank account to make an online "przelew" like normal, you don't need to type in any info in as it has already been entered, just confirm the transfer. And you technically don't need to register with PayU to use it.

Law / Registering Foreign Car In Poland [24]

I intend to buy the car but I understand that I must pay import duty etc and only then I can register it.

Yes. Clo 10%, akcyza at 3.6 or 18.6%, and then VAT at 23%. These are cumulative. Then make sure the car conforms to EU standards, get an inspection/MOT and register it.

Is there any provision in law to avoid the import duty other than the resettlement property ?
I've heard that registering the car in Germany would cost about 5000zl compared to doing it here in poland ?

1. NO.
2. What are you asking here?

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

I'm pretty certain you won't be able to provide empirical evidence for this, just "word on the street".

Well you caught me, it's was a made up story for me to post something on PF as I've got nothing better to do. I said in my first post that what I was about to write is "general sounding" and it's what I saw/heard/experienced at a local level and I something I saw affecting more and more people and outside of one or two industries I've already been seeing massive problems (construction and manufacturing, primarily exported goods) and the entire automotive market including used/new car sales and repairs. Werid though... since when did anybody on this forum care about empirical evidence and things like facts?

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

Ha ha... heh.

These were 30-40% paycuts Delph. Some of them now have massive problems paying off their mortgages, late payments are the norm. Everyone is borrowing money, selling off things, cutting costs even more. Of course management and partners/owners had no paycuts though, just the opposite. All its done is left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth. One guy resorted to stealing office supplies to save money and as a bit of revenge. This was someone who wouldnt cross the street at a red light.

Law / Poland economy is slowing down - how does it affect you? [117]

All very general sounding, but it's here. I see it with the things I buy and sell (or the difficulties in selling). I see many people have had their salaries cut. A few people have lost their jobs, or have been looking to switch their job... no dice. A company I work with is closing down, not enough work. Two companies haven't paid me in over 60 days. I'm sure in Warsaw the situation looks much better, but the exact time frame of events right now do not look good.

By paying higher wages would kick the economy in a higher gear.

Yea, nobody disagrees with that. But how would lowering taxes make that happen?

Work / Average earnings and cost of living in Warsaw? [42]

I wonder where you are living (or telling about) before i start to think you are exaggerating a bit :)

No, I'm not exaggerating, I do this thing that most people really don;t like... and that's that I tell it how it is. Poland is not a normal, functioning Western society, it has numerous pathological elements that are remnants of its history, political situation and economy. Yes, I am highly critical and sharp to point out negative aspects, but then again, if you want some sloppy American face jabbering about how "wonderful, and amazing and just, like, you know, incredible" this country is, well, then this country certainly isn't for you.

I live in Wroclaw (notice how I didn't use the present continuous).

Better not. Why should we read your stinking lies? :):):)

I get it, tongue in cheek, sure sure, but you actually reinforce the point I made above. Most people are so set in their mode of thought that any information to the contrary is certainly filtered out.

Actually, on second thought, the world needs more idiots, so here it is:

poland!! yea poland thumbs up is a wonderful and amazing and just an incredible country with a deep history and the people are like great, they have cabbage and stuff and its actually ok! :) :) you can makes millions of zlotys in poland its easy, jobs are easy to find, everything is great, the weather fanastic, the roads as smooth as a baby's butt. oh and for you american mike, apartments are not only for free, but people pay you to live in them. come to poland, the land of milk and honey!! in fact, you're an idiot for not being here right this instant buy buy buy come come come

Enjoy.

Work / Average earnings and cost of living in Warsaw? [42]

Things here in the U.S.A. are now a great mess, and if this president get re-elected, will get much worst.

Oh really? Obama the black man got you down? Too bad.

Ever heard of the saying " the grass is always greener on the other side"? And that it's never true? Yea, well, that's Poland.

If you want to live in a country that's just as paradoxical as the US, with hospitable, caring and traditional social elements mixed with outright greed, overly aggressive and somewhat backwards hick ("burak") overtones, then come on over. You've got your forward-looking advanced growing economy combined with downright poverty and horrifying, non-functioning public infrastructure (roads, public healthcare, etc.). You will get cheated. You've got a beautiful countryside against a backdrop of *********** streets and parks, with illegal dumps cropping up wherever you turn. I could go on and on. You will get robbed. You will work for someone and not get paid. I like to live here but only because of my very individual situation. To everyone else, I say don't even think about it. Go to some poor Caribbean nation instead.

Life / What's wrong with Poland? I don't see anything. [121]

Yea, statistics really do tell you the whole truth dont they? If you dig a little deeper, you'd find that...

most Poles are already either directly or indirectly financially supporting a number of family members or friends I can see why their sympathy for other suffering individuals might run thin, as they already have enough on their minds.

Travel / What can Poland do to attract more tourists? Llamas farm? [71]

lost great post

you nailed it.

the other thing I find particularly disappointing is that most cities simply dont have that much to do and see (except for Krakow). walking around the old town and drinking at some pub and visiting some church or god knows what other religious relic gets real boring real fast. every european city that is attractive to tourists has an "in" or a "reputation", most polish cities are quite bland when you consider what they can offer your average tourist. and the idea that poland needs more 5 star accommodation and "luxury" entertainment is laughable

Real Estate / Renting in Poland - tenants' rights? [51]

"Wynajem" is the sum you pay for renting the property, czynsz is utilities (gas, water, elec), not the administration fee, which is included in the "czynsz".

If you own the property and its a co-op, then "czynsz" for you is the admin fee + other crap.

From my personal experience, most rental contracts are not worth the paper they are printed on, it's more of a gentlemen's agreement.

Law / Penalty points on driving licences in Poland [26]

Smurf meant that your friend is bullshitting you, in other words, he was not telling the truth. It's not "hoodie" or "graffiti" English (btw, graffiti???? wth does that even mean?), its regular slang.

However, he is not entirely correct. Yes, points are linked to a driver's license, not a PESEL number. However, on the basis of your PESEL the police can easily check how many points you have.

Nonetheless, if you hold Polish citizenship or are a legal resident but have a driver's license from another country you are not affected by points. You must pay the fine but it is "credited", i.e., you do not have to pay on the spot.

Law / Penalty points on driving licences in Poland [26]

You do not get points. They do not go on your UK license. All you have to do is pay the fine. If you do not have legal residence in Poland you must pay on the spot.

Parking tickets are another matter, do pay them otherwise they will hunt you down.
