Love / Are Polish girls forced to marry by their parents? [33]

For example during this harsh winter, parents use to make igloo-like buildings with steel bars.

I was wondering what was up with all those igloos along the side of the highway. I'll drop throw some bread out of the car next time I pass (should be good for some positive karma).

Life / Polish and Czechs [190]

There is a cartoon called "Futurama". In one of episodes, main characters go to museum of XX century and Bender (the robot) take a handset to hear some extinct language. And guess what he've heard ? "Bonne journée!" ;))

Unfortunately some of the places I will be going require French (lots of really messed up african countries...).

Law / Polish Cop Took My Car Registration :S [143]

the same applies to Croatia

In dalmatia, there are lots and lots of people that don't speak anything other than Croatian. It's changing with the younger people learning English. German is hit or miss, more often than not miss. I get by better with broken Czech than English. Everything that we do down there business wise involves a translator. From getting licenses, to inspections, to taxes.

Poles living in the UK are clearly not expected to learn English, hence some British road signs being in Polish.

Which ends up causing problems for everyone as no one feels the need to integrate. If I'm posted somewhere because of work, I expect a translator or an agency will take care of everything for me. If I'm here on my own will, there is absolutely no excuse not to learn Polish.

why should Poles expect from others what they will not do themselves?

Do they expect it? Was there some mass demonstration demanding signs? Did the UK screw themselves over with their immigration policy leading to situations like this?

I hope our national soccer team will one day beat them in a deep playoff game so I can rub it in his face!

You mean the USA? There is a very good chance of that happening. If you mean Poland... well, football and Poland is always severely depressing and probably one of the major contributors to alcoholism in this country.

Work / Poland is headhunting seriously in IT, Finance and HR. [41]

anyone willing to come to Poland and work on IT ????

You have to add "and work for a Polish salary". That's the important bit. That's also why you'll have a hard time finding CCIEs, CISSP/CISMs, and experienced PMs working here.

uhhh where is the url to back this up, a$$hole??

Right here dipsh!t

Still can't find any instances of a British person being deported due to illness.

Most countries have the exact same laws (Germany and France do, in addition to the countries mentioned in the article), and I'm sure that if you look at grounds for deportation in the UK, you will find "Safety of the Public".

Really? Can you then perhaps explain why it says

In the same paragraph:

Mr Liwicki claimed Italy, the Czech Republic and Slovakia had introduced similar legislation. But Philip Tod, spokesman for the European Commission on health issues, expressed amazement at the plan, and said that the Commission would launch an investigation.

Immigration law in the UK allows for removal due to public health. EU law (Freedom of Mobility) provides for removal due to public health.

But in all honesty here, are you really that big of a fan of immigration and open borders, or are you just bitter because the UK government screwed the pooch on allowing unchecked immigration?

he got more language support in Poland than in Germany

Yea, and the roads here are so much better here than in Germany. I don't believe this for a minute. There are so many free avenues for learning German in Germany, where did you friend learn at in Poland? That's one of the big things in my opinion that is missing here, there is no formal system to help one integrate into Polish society.

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

it's more than a third world believe me i lived enough

Here in the third world, I only have a 120mb fiber connection to my house. I long for the days when I can move west and take part in the broadband revolution that completely bypassed Poland.

Overall it's an attractive package ..... but not attractive enough for me to to take a huge cut in earnings.

Exactly. There is quite a bit of work available over here, but the salaries on offer are ridiculous. Decent salaries are on rolling contracts...and they seem to roll on forever, because the positions never get filled...

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Eh, I think cyanide can be removed after 43 years, don't you? What kind of evidence of gassings? Anything that may have shown that could easily have been cleared up. They switched the gas off some time ago ;) ;)

That shouldn't even be commented on, it's based on faulty evidence.

In 1991, the Polish government repeated these tests to disprove Leuchter's findings, but they as well found no evidence of any gassings ever occurring.

Just the opposite actually. In 1994 the IES in Krakow found cyanide in the chambers, but not in the housing units, debunking the "delousing" theory.

ies.krakow.pl
There are also quite a few problems with Leuchter's findings, mainly in the samples which were used (cyanide doesn't penetrate brick, Leuchter's sample). These problems were pointed out by the laboratory which carried out the testing. Have you been to Auschwitz? Even the older gas chambers are pretty well sealed up. Regarding evidence, there loads of eye witness accounts and documentation regarding the exterminations, just no direct written order by Hitler to carry it out (if you don't take into account the Wannsee conference minutes).

There is an argument regarding the number of people affected, and their makeup and reason for being sent to the camps. There is also room for discussion on what should be compensated for, and for how long. Denying it all together is ignorant and takes away from the current relevant topics. But hey, sounds like you're out on a mission. Don't let facts get in your way!

Law / Bring your business to Poland! [56]

rent, labour taxes, people hiring, company taxes, energy, water, heating.

rent for commercial property isn't all that cheap, taxes are 19% plus the same again for capital gains and dividends, the cost to employ labor is fairly high, at about 20%, energy, water, and heating are just as expensive as our neighbors to the west. Most of the investment incentives begin at about the 20m zl level. Bureaucracy adds a large cost to doing business here (your attorneys will probably be busy).

As much as I like Poland, the availability of cheap labor (cheap zloty) is pretty much the only plus I can see right now.

It depends on how much money you come with. If you want to set up a small enterprise, there are barely any benefits to speak of. If you want to set up a factory, it doesn't matter if you speak Polish or not.

I guess this forum is more populated by people that don't like Poland a lot, or have lots of restrictions

No, there are realists here. It's a nice forum because you get the good and the bad.

When you say everything is cheap, what are you comparing it to? What is everything? Labor costs are cheaper for unskilled and semi skilled labor. Skilled labor isn't all that cheap, and the resource pool is pretty shallow.

Poland is probably the best place in Europe to invest if you say, have a company in Germany that makes plastic bumpers and you want to build a new €5million factory to make them with cheap labor over here. It's probably one of the worst places in Europe to start a small enterprise as a foreigner.

Law / Bring your business to Poland! [56]

I live in Wroclaw.

I have an sro in the Czech Republic (IT) with a turnover of less than 30m crowns a year, employee training was paid for during the first 3 years, also received hefty breaks on employee taxes for the first 2 years. Czechinvest helped out quite a bit in getting everything rolling. Taxes are straightforward, contract law is clear and easily enforceable, base corp tax rate is 20% and tax on dividends is 15%. Income tax is a flat 15%.

I've got an LTD in Cyprus, but it would be ridiculous to compare Cyprus to Poland (or anywhere else for that matter), so I'll leave that one.

I was also looking at starting a business in Slovakia, 19% flat tax and no tax on dividends. I've heard that SARIO is kind of like PAIiIZ in that unless you're coming with a dumptruck full of money, it's not worth getting involved.

As for Poland, I've got an Sp. z o.o. (aviation) and a second one on the way (maintenance).

How about you? What have your experiences been so far in Poland and abroad?

On a positive note, the internal market is growing...and things are slowly getting better. The skilled labor pool is growing.

On a negative note, the zloty will probably be pushed back up making Poland less attractive for foreign capital.

Life / Lack of Spacial Acuity in Poland [69]

In my experience, stopping for pedestrians is dangerous, because even if they do cross (often they just stop and stare at you or wave you on) other drivers just tear across the crossing, looking at you to see what's wrong with you for stopping.

I stop. It's the only way that it will change.
