News / GDP of Poland.. 338 billion pop-38.5mil Cali GDP 1.7 Trillion pop-37.7mil [70]

You are the typical stupid highlander aren't you? The Delaware Valley contains the headquarters of twelve Fortune 500 corporations, four of which are in Philadelphia proper. With a gross domestic product of $388 billion, Philadelphia ranks ninth among world cities and fourth in the nation.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia

The US, GDP is 15 trillion catching on???

News / GDP of Poland.. 338 billion pop-38.5mil Cali GDP 1.7 Trillion pop-37.7mil [70]

I may be stupid but I am still three times smarter than you,

I seriously doubt that.

Philadelphia

''As of the 2010 Census, the city had a population of 1,526,006'' ''With a gross domestic product of $388 billion, Philadelphia ranks ninth among world cities and fourth in the nation''

All looks good to me...

GDP you mention refers to the whole metropolitan area of Philadelphia which amounts to 6 million people, not just 1.5.

That's not my fault, it didn't mention the metropolitan area it said Philadelphia which has a population of 1.5 million and is a CITY like I said. And i knew the metro population and where it begins and ends way before you looked it up on your little computer. You've never even actually been here. Whoever wrote that in wikipedia was wrong! He should have written metropolitan Philadelphia, when you just say Philadelphia you're talking strictly about the city itself. Metro Philly is also completely different cities like Trenton, Bristol, Camden, West Chester, Wilmington spread over three different states!!

Sorry, it is only your fault because you are not able to read your own link properly:

Umm nope, my link said "With a gross domestic product of $388 billion, Philadelphia ranks ninth among world cities and fourth in the nation." No mention of metropolitan. I read the top of Philadelphia page on wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia, NOT the economy section which you point out on the bottom. No misreading silly boy.

UK, Ireland / Unemployed Poles in Ireland : a crash course in milking the system [323]

"Polish workers are returning to Britain seeking employment, lured back by higher salaries. For the first time since the financial crash, official figures have shown a rise in the number of Poles living in the UK. About 45,000 people from the east European country were recorded as settling in Britain last year, despite the fact the UK is still in the grip of a recession."

Love / How do guys from Poland flirt? [47]

Whenever I greet him he puts on this huge smile, looks me in the eyes and quickly looks downwards.

He sounds a little shy or is a bit intimidated by your looks. Looks like you're just gonna have to go over and say Hi!

I remember that during my stay in Poland people gave me stares, but at that time, the amount of tourists was zero and they could tell youre abroad from miles away.

Funny enough my one friend just recently returned from Poland to the States. He says girls immediately noticed him on the street and could tell he was from another country, was well dressed, took take of himself. He said the average Polish man (in Poland) in his late 20s or 30s looks like a slob. Wears old out of style clothing, has a big beer belly, doesn't use deodorant and sits in a bar drinking that one beer for like 2 hours.

Pennboy; Thanks! Yes Polish men dont overdress that much. Personally I dont like men who spend more time in front of a mirror than women do, but hey, no one likes a guy who looks like a bum.

Neither do I lol, I didn't say overdress, many completely lack common hygiene and new clothing.

Trashy clothing, tanned? Sounds like "Jersey Shore' episode... ;)

I wasn't trying to make Polish guys sound bad I'm one myself. I was just just saying what my friend (also Polish) noticed after going back on a recent vacation. The guys who have pretty well paying jobs, dress nice, are clean have nice cars. Just the average guy in Poland, who doesn't work abroad, and doesn't have much money looks like a slob. As for the females, thankful things are changing. I remember how it seemed like every other Polish girl who was new to the States had bleached blond hair, orange tan, and wore very bright and colorful clothing. It was kinda embarrassing.

Nope Polish, moved here as a kid.

Might have. I'm sure it's different in major city like Warsaw and smaller towns.

Poles' atttiude towards broken Polish

I'm split in my opinion. I feel that if someone is a foreigner and is learning Polish, meaning over time he/shes will become fluent in it, I wish them all luck! But if someone only managed to learn a little and thinks it's enough to get by, or knows some because the parents spoke it and is speaking broken, funny accented Polish I think they should stop. Either learn the language fluently or don't speak it because you're embarrassing yourself.

Study / Times Higher Education rankings 2012 Poland's top universities at end! [93]

Such rankings are clearly Anglo-American centric, when I see the best German univ at 45th, the best French at 59th and the best Russian around 300th place, It can not be objective. Polish ones

I was wondering the same. 14 of the top 20 American!!?? wtf, clear favoritism. I don't believe that the Jagellonian University is down on the same level as the University of Wyoming which I've never even heard of.

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

According to this genetic map of Europe (enlarge image)
Poles and Russians are one of the most closest nations in Europe genetically.
Their icons are even overlapping!

That's true. Supposedly even closer to Russians than Czechs! One can safely answer than the reason for the turmoil is 'the biggest problems are always within family"

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

What is relation of majority of Poles toward Ukrainian writer Nikolai Gogol?

Historian Bohdan Osadchuk was a true friend of Poland. He worked his entire life to bringing Poles and Ukrainians closer together. I remember his comments on Lech Walesa's visit to Kiev during the Orange Revolution. " Walesa went on the podium lifted his arms and the crowd of Ukrainians shouted Polsha!!!Polsha!!! A group of Russians nearby looked angrily at the Ukrainians and ever more angrily at the Poles."

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

Because Ukraine is right in between them. It's not a rivalry Poland just doesn't want history repeating itself. Russia partitioned Poland, suppressed two uprisings in the 19th century, then Polish Bolshevik War, then WWII invaded with Hitler, then forced Communism in Poland when there were supposed to be free elections. It's not paranoia or some new phenomenon Russian involvement in Polish politics too often came to no good. Younger Poles (30 and under) in general don't have anything against the Russian people we're Slavs from the same cradle. People just don't trust their government.

History / Polish relation about Russians, Ukrainians? [281]

Do you seriously believe that modern Russia somehow threat to Poland at the moment or will threat in any foreseeable future? For example demographically or military?

There are other ways to control a people or country then invading it. Russia has shown that doing business with it and politics are co existent. Poland had an issue with Russia, it cut off import of meats. The Ukraine had an issue it turned the knob on the gas pipeline. It seams that it expects things to be in it's favor or else... threats, intimidation. Even more so to it's Slavic neighbors it should be more of a big brother than a bully.

Love / Are Polish men handsome to you? [182]

Try living in Poland for a while, they have just as many Mr Beans as we do.

Yea there are a few.

Its also a myth that most Polish men are masculine and muscular IMO. In the UK i wouldn't blame anybody for stereotyping them like that, but in Poland its a different story. Not too many nerds emigrated over here.

Ha..the jocks or bodybuilders usually come from working class, the office boys stayed behind.

I don't understand this stuff about Polish guys not being sexy.

Men like in any other country.. Some look boyish, some looks like hicks, some like criminals, some pretty boys, some Quasimoto.

News / 2014-2020 EU Cohesion funds for Poland [11]

With Europe split in two between those who wants budget cuts and those who oppose them (poorer nations) how much is Poland expected to get for the 2014-20 time period? And has Poland bin given all the funds allocated to her up until now? In one article I read that of all the money meant for Poland during the first year in which Poland received them (2007) only some 14% or so was given! Because the necessary changes weren't done in time to receive them. In the following year Poland already received some 40% of the funds assigned to her. Does the money from the previous years which are not used up roll over into the next year or is it lost?

News / 2014-2020 EU Cohesion funds for Poland [11]

Most of the money gets lost; sucked back into the EU vacuum, and the main reason for Poland not receiving it is Poland itself. For every euro Poland receives, it has to spend an equivalent amount from its own budget (either 1:1, or a pre-determined ratio). A good example is the 5.5bn euros earmarked for rail infrastructure investment, of which only 303m was used.

That's what I wanted to know so in reality Poland will not get anywhere near the 68 billion euros for the 2007-2013 period. Hopefully they've learned by now to keep up with the deadlines.

I never heard that. Post a link and I'll take a look. Good thread!

It was in Wprost magazine, they wont let you access the archives unless you subscribe. All it said was that during the first year 2007, Poland was slow to prepare and do all the necessary things to utilize on the funds, and got some 14-16%. Next year 40%, so I'm assuming that by now (2012) they're pretty much getting all of it. I did find a new link from October 2012, as of then Poland had used up 78.5% of the EU funds allocated to her for 2007-2013 years. And that in the 2014-2020 we should expect 80 billion Euros, which should be mostly spent on infrastructure.

dzienniknowy.pl/blog/pokaz/1301.dhtml

Poland's prime minister said Friday was the happiest day of his life after it was announced the country would receive 105.8 billion euros over seven years from the new EU budget.

News / €80 billion for Poland new EU budget [166]

Correct me if I'm wrong!
As for the rest of your examples = are you telling me that EU is funding everything in Poland?

That's what upsets me with westerners and western media. They've been lead to believe that EVERYTHING that has improved in Poland after it joined the EU is because of the EU and the money it gives. For every euro the EU gives Poland Poland has to give one also, sometime 2! Poland's economy was growing quite steadily before the EU.

So instead of spending on roads, they could keep overblown administration, buy votes of plebs through various social spendings etc.

Actually that's partially true motorway and expressway building speeded up in the mid 1990s then stopped right by 2000.

Oh dear. That's not true in the slightest - the roads were in a diabolical state in 1990.

The state of Poland's roads can be blamed on money, or rather lack of. There were ambitious plans during the Gierek era but since most of the western loans were squandered or spent on useless projects we see the results to this day.

News / €80 billion for Poland new EU budget [166]

Pretty much. The stupidity of the spending of those loans was unbelievable - instead of focusing on buying licences to produce consumer products, they sunk so much money into 'moustache-socialist' projects.

It was also partially stolen by our own corrupt politicians and there are claims that the Russians too had a hand in this. Investing large sums of money in steel mills (a thing of the past) in the 1970s?? No one in the west would have done suck a dumb thing.

"Around 1% of our GDP growth since 2008 is because of EU money," said Poland's Regional Development Minister Elzbieta Bienkowska.

"That's almost 300,000 jobs. It's an enormous change, a kind of miracle I would say."

Cohesion funds are not designed to work alone. There has to be matching investment on a national level. In Poland the result is that GDP per capita has risen from just over 40% of the EU average when it joined the Union in 2004 to nearly 70% now.

"We would probably have made this progress in about 20 years if we had been forced to go it alone, without EU development money," Mrs Bienkowska said.

bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-20318959

'Nearly five months after the final whistle at the European football championships, economists and officials say that Poland is reaping the benefits.
According to the London-based Brand Finance Institute, Euro 2012 helped lift Poland up its 100-nation ranking, from 24th to 20th.

In financial terms, the value of the brand "Poland" jumped 75 percent.

"The impact on our image is going to be long-term," said Joanna Mucha, Poland's sport and tourism minister.

The 677,000 fans who flocked to Poland may be worth their weight in gold -- and not only because they spent 1.1 billion zloty (266 million euros, $341 million), or 33 percent more than forecast.

A mighty 92 percent of foreign supporters surveyed by the PBS Institute in Poland at the end of Euro 2012 said they would recommend it for a holiday, and 80 percent aimed to come back.

In 2011, three million foreign tourists visited this nation of 38 million. Experts forecast that number will grow by 766,000 a year through to 2020.
