News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

By the way, America is actually arriving at this point as well

What could possibly go wrong when people are elected on the basis of who they would want to have a pint with. I can't see anyone wanting to go on the lash with Kaczyński, from reading these posts it seems that PiS attract a load of private drinkers.

I am currently involved in industrial action and a rather nice Polish woman who admits that her family are all PiS supporters is strike breaking. She believes that the powers that be will look after her best interests...deluded.

Life / The climate for gardening in Poland [224]

Thats great, I started mine in a greenhouse but soon had to move the greenhouse as the fig had quickly outgrown it. It is about 10years old now and gives a lot of fruit on the new growth. Despite the wasps getting a lot of the fruit I still get enough for my needs plus I propagate it making nice presents.

Do you know the variety of fig you are growing. In Ireland, as far as I know, brown turkey is the only one that produces fruit that ripens.

News / Russian agents plan sabotage acts in Poland??? [51]

Don't want to get invaded by the US? Then be friends with the US and the West. Simple :)

US foreign policy in a nut shell. Translation do what we say or else

Off-Topic / The true causes of the current war between Russia and Ukraine [174]

Russia with its terrorist methods and interference into internal affairs of other countries promotes instability, unrest and chaos worldwide

A bit like Ukraine's invasion of Iraq that created chaos, instability and unrest and the creation of ISIS.

Life / Do colored immigrants in Poland function better than in Western countries? [167]

@Kashub1410
I didnt for a second suggest any of that, I simply pointed out reality. The EU is key to Poland building its economy and as I said above, with rights/desires comes responsibility. Poland has its own EU representatives both elected and appointed civil servants and its their job to network and then build alliances to get the result Poland wants.

In the past Ireland tried the pure sovereignty approach with "comely maidens dancing at the crossroads" etc and it was a disaster. PiS seem to want to re-enact this disaster in Poland.

I dont like the modern world with its mobile phones and Internet (apart from the bits I use) food deliveries and a list of other things several pages long but that's the way the world has gone. Poland will just have to get used to modern life.

If you dont like the club you are perfectly free to campaign to have the good people of Poland follow Britains lead and vote to leave. Perhaps Global Poland will have more luck than Global Britain.

Oh, and good luck paying for this huge military outside the EU.

News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [325]

Stopping Napoleon and Hitler are convent excuses given to Russia

Well they did stop them and occupied Paris and Berlin 😊

Perhaps during the deluge Poland should picked better allies.

I would learn a bit of history if I were you cos that polemic and the previous one are ahistorical nonsense.

Especially the 'Hollywood = holy wood = holy genitalia" garbage.

You deserve a knighthood for reading that :)
I just wanted to see what normal people said about the tripe and you are both right

News / How could PiS better spend billions instead of 500+ ? [275]

a tiny public sector, low tax revenue and wild-west capitalism and can assure you that the developed societies of Europe are easier, better and safer places to live in.

This is undoubtedly true

History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [397]

Everything you have posted chimes exactly with my experience of school meals. The free milk was horrible exactly as Pavian describes. The food was probably worse than Torq describes and not as balanced. Its nothing to do with communism just the bean counters undervaluing the country's potential and future.

GDP per capita

I agree, GDP is not a good indicator of a nations wealth. Irish GDP/head is greater than Poland or Britains but both are clearly richer than Ireland.

Special category (or "political") status was de facto prisoner of war (POW) status, providing them with some of the privileges of POWs, such as those specified in the Geneva Conventions.[3] This meant prisoners did not have to wear prison uniforms or do prison work, were housed within their paramilitary factions, and were allowed extra visits and food parcels.[4][5]

Further discussion can be found on any number of Irish forums...

@jon357
Ireland (26 counties) had no industrial heritage to speak of so the government invested highly in education and opened the economy to attract investment. Its easier to move "low skilled" jobs than high skilled ones, Apple for example couldn't move as easily to another EU country as a less skills based company could, the same is true of the pharma industry and so on. The tax regime question has largely been answered.

A SWF is great in principal however the housing crisis needs addressing first Ireland is 32nd in income inequality of 34 OECD members. The next government will hopefully address this.

Were those in the POW camps treated as POWs and according to the Geneva Convention

Yes.

@Bobko
The 26 counties had a SWF but it was swallowed during the banking crisis probably because it was set up by corrupt individuals. For example one of those overseeing it, a former finance minister and future Taoiseach didn't have a bank account. I find that hard to believe but apparently its true.

Setting up a slush fund for your rich mates when there is a severe housing crisis is a disgrace.
