USA, Canada / What do Polish people think of the USA [287]

if it wasnt for Ronald Reagan

...there would be no Amnesty... I would not get a legal status, and I would have to marry some American dude in the 80's to get a green card, instead of marrying for love (which did not do me any good either). LOL.

President Reagan is my hero anyway!

Travel / My impressions from Poland [26]

Baki, I'm glad to hear you had mostly positive experience. The sandals and socks look funny, but it is pretty common in Europe in general. In the US, I see mostly men from India "sporting" this style l... :)

However, what I still look with amazement at, are people who wear shorts and tank tops in 90F weather with socks and gym shoes. I feel like bursting in flames on their behalf... Often, a nice sun dress... with socks and gym shoes! Sandals (no socks) would be great instead, I think.

I guess, it's all cultural.

Language / Instruction how to install Polish diacritic letters on your computer [30]

This is simpler than working with Word.

Assuming you work with Windows XP:
1. Control Panel
2. date, Time, language and Regional..
3. add other languages
4. details
5. key settings - choose Polish (Programmers)
6. add - it should put the icon in your task bar
7. click Language bar next to key settings to see if the adding of the icon to the task bar is checked.

It should work. Then type as usual. When you come to a letter that you want it to have a little "thingy" press Alt & Ctr at the same time and voila: śćżź

Make sure that the language bar icon in the task bar is checked for polish"programmers'.
It defaults to English

It works, if you don't need to type a lot...

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Its normal process that some words from different language get into polish...

Yes, and it's a new kind of language called Polang. It flourishes in Chicago:

"Dostalem nowa robote w siapie". (shop/factory)
" Mam teraz dobra insiure." (insurance)
" Zamierzam kupic nowa kare." (car-samochod)
"Kupilem dom na kornerze, to mam wieksza lote". (corner-rog, corner lot)

It sounds horrible, but hilarious. :)

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

"you bet your dupa I'm Polish"

..I'd say, just funny.

It depends in what context you use the word, it can be funny or insulting.

Is it 'macz' or 'mac'?

It is mać. It's a archaic word for a mother, so no - it's not a good word all together.

Life / Gypsies or Roma: European and Polish attitudes towards [87]

It sounds like nothing changed in the last 3 or 4 decades. Locals were always on guard when a tabor of Gypsies were passing thru a town or a village. They were so very skillful in stealing...

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

I don't think Starbucks made it to Poland yet, but they make pretty good coffee there anyway. Who cares about that overprices latte...I make a better one at home.

I had just as tasty Seattle's Best Coffee at Borders Book Store café today...

Or teafaggot's job is begging... ?

Definitely, his is begging for attention here and gets a lot of it... so for him - mission accomplished.
Polish people are too proud to be beggars.

Genealogy / How hard is it to get a Polish passport? [74]

Nope. Quite a few posters asked you about your nationality, or your native language, but you never gave an answer. Even the above quote says 'origins', and not I'm British, Polish, German, Ukrainian...whatever, your answers are evasive.

So, why are you ashamed of your nationality? (I know you will not answer this question)

News / What is wrong with Poland that Poles emigrate? [167]

Amathyst, there were tons of Irish in Chicago in the 80's, most took any jobs because there were none back home. The long political unrest depressed the country's job market and caused massive emigration to USA. We all know: no job, no money, no food, no place to live...

It was still not much comparing to the Potato Famine in mid 1800's.

Life / Polish Folk Music [30]

In the mean time, if you want to listen to polish folk music, go to: radiostacje.com, click internet stations and scroll down to "Biesiada i Folk". You will need to download Winamp if you don't have one. They play all the polish country music you can stand and then some :)

Genealogy / How hard is it to get a Polish passport? [74]

LIR, a very small margin of polish immigrants enjoy putting down their compatriots, as it makes them feel better, smarter, more important. It's a very odd personality trait, which often comes from deprived upbringing, when the neighbors had "more".

When they finally come to a point in his/her life and can finally have the things they missed, they take a big pleasure to belittle his own kind so they will suffer as he/she was.

The ones I met here, their favorite statement is : " This is America, nobody will give you anything, you have to work!" like, Is there a country where you don't have to work and the government gives you all for free? (If there is, I'm getting on the plane tomorrow).

Of course, most polish people help others instead.

Genealogy / How hard is it to get a Polish passport? [74]

Exactly. That's the clue, and because it could also describe me, how I would express myself, I read clearly between his lines. A couple of times he spelled an English word like you would hear it phonetically spoken in polish. Once, he said "when I go to Poland to visit my family"...he did not say "my wife's family". I would not refer to my husband's family as "my" family. It is always "my husband's family" (of course, it was my family, but in a different sense). I can identify with his recollections of PEWEX in one thread, no foreign born person even living in Poland would know or understand the concept of it. It makes me think, he left Poland around the same time as me, lat 70's or early 80's...There is a lot of bitternes and anger in him.

Wow, Puzzly. Your view of him really surprized me......

The same here. I did not hear this kind of take on Milosz.

WE ALL LIKE AND NEED POWERFUL AMIGOS! :)
Maybe it has something to do with him living in America, as well as what happened in Poland in th 80's. I see him in a positive light.

Yet 30 years ago Ireland was poor, agricultural, backward state. Irish people emigrated to USA, England and other better states. Now they can earn betten in their own country than outside :).

I believe, it will happen in Poland too.

Life / Famous Polish people (that we have actually heard of) [224]

I have asked before what the poles have ever contributed to european civilisation. And many times poles have posted the names of obscure famous polish people who are famous only to poles. Are there any famous poles the world has actully heard of apart from marie curie. ?

Dear Puzzy, this is not bragging, but a respond to the one who questioned. The thread was not started by a Pole. You can find many flaws in Poles (in anybody, if you want to), but bragging is not one of them. That's why the world knows so little about Poland... :(

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) - Jósef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski. Polish-born English novelist and short-story writer, a dreamer, adventurer, and gentleman. He, He , He.

there will be more novels wrote by Sienkiewicz thanks to our 'dear' Minister for Education (Poles know what I'm talking about ;) ).

What do you mean? Why - "dear"?

Life / Famous Polish people (that we have actually heard of) [224]

"Que Vadis" - Henryk Sinkiewicz - novelist

"Towards the end of the novel, Sienkiewicz creates a dramatic scene, the symbolism of which would not have been lost on his countrymen: the German beast (a black Germanic bull) to whose horns Ligia (representing Poland) has been tied, is vanquished by Ursus (representing the Polish people), who thereby restores her freedom"
