Life / Polish people are the most ignorant people in the world! [331]

Perhaps this thread could be renamed 'the ignorant stereotypes thread' and placed in the off-topic lounge for anyone who wishes to vent. Any statement to the effect that all Poles (or any other nationality) are 'X' are facile. There is good and bad in every nationality, and we are all individuals.

News / Are the Germans taking back Świnoujście? [22]

A couple of articles in 'Gazeta Polska' claim the Germans are taking back their former town of Świnoujście (Swinemunde).

Świnoujście returns to Germany

"Year by year it is becoming a German town in Poland ... Germans are absorbing Świnoujścieand this is no armed takeover. Swinoujście is located within the boundaries of Poland, but culturally and economically it has ceased being connected with Poland. It will be associated with Germany, as a matter of fact it already is.

Is this anything for Poland to be seriously concerned about?

Life / Conflicting views about life in Poland? [45]

Indeed so, yet I look out on to the streets here and see new car after new car, and the apartment prices seem to be pricey. How is this possible?

I don't notice this. It all depends on where you happen to live, I suppose.

Life / Conflicting views about life in Poland? [45]

the cars in the car park outside seem to resemble the stock of a new or nearly new car showroom. .

Perhaps Polish people just take more pride in their cars.

There seems to be two Polands: the former, as described by Delphi and yourself, which exists on Polish Forums, and the latter, where Poles actually live.

History / What do Poles think about Turks? [761]

Hi,
I am a Turkish student who might come to Lodz for university. I am wondering if there is any possible racism against Turks?

There is a significant risk of racism towards you. Of course, not everyone is like this, but some are. Whether you experience any unpleasant incidents or not would depend on your luck.

Just trying to give an honest answer.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

when I'm speaking to these people in normal conversation in Polish they can't tolerate these mistakes.

I completely disagree. I go to the shops practically everyday, and don't have the slightest problem with being misunderstood. Sometimes I get funny looks. Sometimes people correct what I have said to them. But I always get what I want without necessarily getting the grammar right.

It's possible to speak a language with terrible grammar and still be understandable.

What usually throws people is poor pronunciation. In that case, the person on the receiving end genuinely won't know what the hell you are asking for.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

I've never been yelled at by people in public places in Poland.

Have you ever been outside Poland?

(This is an accidental misquote, I intended to quote something else).

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Sure from your point of view. Some people may find very strange your neck of the woods.

For once I'd agree with Ironside.

Politeness conventions vary between societies.

It's difficult to say the conventions that exist in society 'X' are in some way better or worse than those in society 'Y'.

Ant, unfortunately, is just exhibiting prejudice and lack of cultural awareness, something Poles are often accused of.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

I've yet to meet an English guy who doesn't say "fcuk"

Oddly enough, I have met some Polish people who don't say 'kurwa' all the time, as well as English people who aren't constantly using the word ******'.

History / What do Poles think about Turks? [761]

What exactly is your problem with this? It's guys like you that give the impression to the rest of the world that Poles are primitive.

Because civilized and intelligent people have nothing against mixed-nationality relationships, and regard those who see things differently as 'primitive'.

Love / Polish cities with most single young women [11]

Gazeta Prawna has researched the sex ratio of males to females in major Polish cities. Warsaw comes out tops for the greatest number of single females aged between 20-35.

"It is believed that Warsaw has a surplus population of young women due to its high student population, as women outnumber men in Polish higher education."

Szczecinianin, I think you should be giving links in the posts on your blog to articles from which you're taking the information given in those posts.

I did think of posting a link here for your benefit. Then I remembered that you don't click on them.

UK, Ireland / Agnieszka Pomaska, beautiful Polish politician [43]

I taught at a Polish university for eight years and Polish students are smart. Go get those good jobs Poles!

I agree with your first sentence that 'Poles are hungry'.

But fairly obviously, after a generation or so living in the UK, they will cease to be so.

It should also be pointed out that there are many in the world 'hungrier' than Poles. Ukrainians, for example.

Personally, what I find really 'lame' are over-qualified Poles doing crap jobs in the UK going on about how 'superior' they are to natives. No doubt some Brit with a Phd would be cleverer than the average Polish manual worker, but somehow I couldn't imagine many British intellectuals doing physical work in Poland and complaining they couldn't discuss the finer points of Wittgenstein with their work colleagues.

Work / What are the chances of getting a part-time job for an Egyptian who's coming to study and live in Poland? [37]

I employed an Egyptian English language teacher, who was doing medical studies. I also employed his sister. Anyone making enquiries about employment in Poland on this forum is inevitably told there isn't any. In reality, it just depends on the employability and skills of the person concerned, and the effort they are prepared to make to find employment.

Knowing Arabic and English well is very useful. You might be able to find work in, for example, a call center, even without knowing Polish.

Love / Do Polish men date black women?? [69]

Wulkan appears to be against miscegenation, like a redneck American from the Deep South or a South African under apartheid. His views on race-mixing and the imagined hierarchy of races are highly amusing. I'd love to hear more.

^If I got it wrong, then please explain your objection to what rozumiemnic wrote.^

You seem to be suggesting that Polish women are inadequate to be partners, wives and mothers for Polish men. But this simply isn't true.

No, she doesn't. What you have just written 'simply isn't true'.

Then prove it.

The evidence is what Rozumiemnic wrote. She wasn't suggesting what you said she was suggesting. You cannot ask someone to prove a negative.

English to be exact.

You seem inordinately proud of this fact. Are we allowed to guess her name? Was it 'Sharon' or 'Tracey'?
