News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

'Sin' certainly is, and as a concept it should never be the basis for legislation.

Thou shalt not steal,
Thou shalt not kill,

shouldn't be subject to legislation?

Hard to know how it affects Poland's place in the EU

wrong thread.... I'd repost it there but the mods get very testy about these things so it'll have to remain here....

'sin' is still a construct for those who hold specific beliefs

Not everything is a "construct".... a lot of things that seem, on the surface, like constructs are probably hard-wired into our DNA... (and/or the result of evolutionary fitness or the lack thereof).

Yet, as you know, gender is not sex.

You and I know that but the crazy AGP's are trying to dismantale every argument that biological sex even exists...

try to be nice and say "Okay woman can refer to the social class but female refers to the sex class" and the next they you know they're calling themselves "female"

say "biological woman" and they say "I'm not a machine... I'm a biological woman too!"

I drew the line months ago and they stomped right over it while calling themselves girls and threatening anyone who won't play along with their fantasies....

Do you honestly think Dylan Mulvaney or Jeffrey Marsh or Jessica Yaniv are women? Really?

What about Eddie Izzard... woman or straight man with a giant cross-dressing kink?

Does anyone need to?

I think any competent adult should be able to do so... and an inability or unwillingness to do so is a sign that something is wrong.

I can, can you? Or are you afraid to?

It's simple.... three words.....

Where are the political parties?

the civil rights movement, the womens movement and the gay movement in America did not have political parties...

you think that such a basic principle is an 'ideology'?

of course it is, the idea of equality under the law is a new and comparitively fragile idea and not something that arises easily or naturally in many human societies....

Can you define the words "woman" and "man" in a way that is not circular?

there simply isn't an 'ideology' at all

Every political movement has ideology.

The original gay rights movement had an ideology, which was about equality under the law and separation of religious and civil law.

the current trans movement is about two ideas: believing makes it so* and the idea that people's 'authentic' selves can only be found through expensive and invasive medical interventions

exulansic (a lesbian) is very good on this topic (mainstream gay people, men and women) are some of the strongest critics of the AGP driven idea that women can have functioning male genitalia or that men can have periods...

*I have nothing against legal adults who've undergone counseling and decide on medical transition I have a _lot_ against those convincing unhappy teen girls to get masectomies and sterilization

And no, a man cannot become a woman, if you body produces (or has ever produced) sperm there is no way to turn into a person whose body produced eggs (and vice versa)

Food / Origin of the pierogi [127]

filled dumplings that occur in one form or another across half the world

Where do samosas fit in? Independent invention or adaption of the original (I thought the origin was more Mongolian but I could be wrong)....

What about empenadas?

What does the Arab world have?

History / Recommended Poland's history books [257]

I would say that they're pragmatic and resourceful and far from being romantic, they're much more inclined to be cynical.

I pretty much agree... the self-image is passionate but the reality is a bit different. Absolutely resourceful (and capable of more sang-froid when needed than I could ever manage).... The cynical part comes, I think, from the communist period.

Soviet style government induces massive cynicism in any population subjected to it....

UK, Ireland / How do the Polish and People with Polish Ancestry feel about British Royality [61]

the founding fathers were all British.

The single most influential group not from the British Isles were the Germans, IIRC some social analyst said the US as an "anglo-german" society.

When I travel in Europe, in a weird way Germans often seem more similar to Americans than British people, despite the language difference.

Language / Busha and JaJa [140]

So anyone bashing it

I don't think anyone is bashing anyone using the terms, they're well establish in the Polish-American community. They're just not used in modern Poland. I've never heard busia (though I think it might have some regional use in eastern Poland). I've heard dziadzia (jaja) a little but usually not of grandfathers more very old men in general...

"banter" (a British, Aussie, NZ thing) where we insult each other in amusing ways

In some parts of the US that's called "breaking balls" or "busting balls" .... but it can go too far.... one minute it's fun and games the next someone is being repeatedly stabbed with a butcher's knife....

African American "the dozens" is similar (though usually phrased through "yo mama so...." jokes

"Yo mama so fat she sat on a quarter and a booger came out of George Washington's nose...."

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [275]

Nowhere else.

I work with Hungarians.... one is against Orban, one... I don't know, and one defends him. In the case of Ukraine the Hungarian minority was specifically the reason. This same person (generally very tolerant and international in most things) also complains about the fate of Hungarian in Slovakia....

Orban didn't put up the posters. AFAICT they began appearing before he was re-elected. They tap into a general free-floating feeling in Hungary that they were grievously wronged by Trianon... which colors lots of Hungarian opinions.

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [275]

but ordinary Hungarians have no stomach for an expansion of Hungary

Not talked to many Hungarians have you? Most have no stomache for trying to take back areas by force but they mostly do support things like the "karta Węgra" (similar to karta Polaka which was modeled on it) and are more concerned about Hungarian minorities being able to get education in Hungarian than things like bombing attacks on civilians...

And you can't walk 100 meters in Budapest without seeing the map of Greater Hungary either as posters, t-shirts etc

And many Hungarians fell for the russian lies about russian speakers being oppressed which made them a little sympathetic to them....

mexicans in the kitchen

It's my understanding that in the US kitchen staff in pretty much any type of restaurant is made up of Mexicans.... doesn't matter if it's Traditional American or Chinese or Indian or Middle Eastern or Italian... go in the kitchen and it's Mexicans.

There used to be a great Bosnian place on ul. Chmielna in Warsaw

A few years ago I stopped at a Jugo-nostalgia place* on... Jerozolimskie? It was fun and seemed to be doing good business but the next time I was in Warsaw it had disappeared....

*I was never there but I do miss Jugoslavija... much more interesting than the weird postage stamp states they have there now....

Did i forget something?

I think the best tv series from behind the Iron Curtain.... the most famous was "Nemocnice na kraji města" (Szpital na perfyferiach / Hospital on the edge of town) but my favorite was 'Žena za pultem' (Kobieta za ladą / The Woman behind the Counter) set in a Prague model supermarket.

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [275]

incredibly ignorant westerners.

As late as the 1970s-80s in the general American imagination, all the countries behind the Iron Curtain were slavic (remember closed borders, limited media etc etc).

I remember my first encounter with written Hungarian in the mid 1970s.... I was very confused because it didn't seem like the slavic languages I'd... glimpsed. I even remember thinking Romanian was slavic because of geography and the few words I'd ever heard (translated interviews with romanian gymnasts in the 1976 olympics) sounded pretty slavic...

The world was very different and it was much harder to find out about things like that, even for those of us interested in them...

History / What do Poles owe to Hungarians? [275]

I have never heard that dream expressed by Hungarians

It is impossible to talk about regional politics with Hungarians for 15 minutes without Trianon being brought up (sometimes multiple times).

While very few openly express hopes for overturning it they are obsessed with maintaining the language in the diaspora population (often more than the Hungarians in said places themselves).

They don't like the Ukrainian language law because they think Hungarians should be able to receive their entire education in Hungarian....

It's blindingly obvious that Orban siding with russia early on was at least partly motivated by maps about what countries would get what parts of Ukraine being circulated and part was to be given to Hungary.

I used to love visiting Hungary but really don't want to anymore unless they dump the useless russian puppet Orban
