Love / Are all Polish guys like this [48]

So, here is my answer and an attempt at sanity: No.

How do you know, if you are:
a) not Polish, or
b) not a woman, or
c) not a gay?

Love / Are all Polish guys like this [48]

they simply didn`t carry out the sweaty T-shirt test at the very beginning

It would be enough if they did not use cosmetics in excessive quantities to present themselves as more "sexually attracive".

That's true. It's incredible how telling and decisive this factor can be. I think Nature made it so which means the genetic compliance isn't good within a couple if they don't like each other's smell.

But how to make him give you his used T-shirt if doesn't dare to say hello to you?

polish guy who always blushes when he looks at me

It is obvious that you should make the first move. To reduce the sexual fascination and tension that is between you and him, during that first verbal contact with such a shy person you should do it in a most neutral way. Start a conversation with him imagining you were addressing a female, for example, you may ask him if he speaks English or if he does, ask him how long he has been learning the language. Then you may ask him about something else (but for goodness sake, don't ask him if he has a girl-friend). If I were you, I would not let this first conversation flow for too long. Let things develop rather slowly and they will surely take their own, desirable course for both of you. Remember: Rome wasn't built in a day.

And the guy will think that he picked you. Yes, most of us are such fools :-)

In that case they must be either blind or extremely self-oriented. The rules of the game are perfectly know to both sexes and if the female makes a first move she does it the such a subtle way that she (and he as well) will not feel embarassed if her advance is turned down. The male, on the other hand, making the first move is prepared to being rejected and instead of feeling embarassed, he (merrily) moves on to his next "prey".

Life / Another reason Polish people and Poland pisses me off [52]

Does Fiacik have pedalki, hamulciky, and oponki? How about okienka and kierowniczka?

That's apparently in Czech ...

Maybe they're all just smarter than you....

Me or novichok?

Both of you even taken together.

Fiaciki, Mazdki, Hondki, piwko i wódeczka...

Never heard Mazdka or Hondka. They sound ridiculous and strange and may only be used by a person struck with affection. Fiacik was often applied to Mały Fiat (126P). Quite rightly, in my view, as it was so small. I don't think diminutives are overused in Polish.

compare szczęście to the czech štěstí...unpredictable combinations of letters

Actually, the combination of letters cz and sz was an original Czech invention which the Polish had borrowed at the time when the Hus reform of the Czech ortography did not yet arrived. This old Czech transcription has been preserved in the English spelling of the word 'Czech'.

English also uses combinations of letters in the same way as does Polish; these are the 'sh' (Polish sz) and the 'ch' (Polish cz), haven't you noticed?

To a Pole, the more complicated, the better.

Only in your head. We don't feel our language being complicated. Maybe you do, but that's a different kettle of fish.

News / Famous Polish writer prosecuted for free speech [71]

news is on the tvp website

The point is that a far less number of people (PiS supporters in particular) would go to read the TVP website than watch their news bulletin. That's the TVP's trick; they know about it, so not wishing to diffuse such news too broadly, they publish it on their website only so as not to be accused of censoring certain news. People like you, for example, who live comfortably in the so-called rotten West, and in America in particular where such practices are impossible as the government does not control any media, are prone to buy that sophisticated bull$hit that the public TV in Poland applies.

I heard a victim of priest paedophlia speaking on that on another TV channel. The victim said he was very much dissapointed by the fact there was no mention of the Vatican's verdict issued on the case of those two archbishops on the main public TV news bulletin.

Pointing out rightard vice

The number of rightard vices in Poland is rapidly increasing and the myth of "moral superiority" of PiS is vanishing at a tremendous rate right now.

By the way, the verdicts of punishment imposed by the Vatican on the two Polish archbishops in connection to their hiding cases of priest paedophilia have not even been mentioned on the public, government-controlled, television, I am told.

Food / Polish Salted Butter [68]

Irish grass-fed beef won more medals than any other country

An interesting contribution to Irish culinary traditions comes from the Middle Ages and can be found in the book: "Vikings. A Concise History of the Vikings":

According to Irish accounts, after the battle [fought in Ireland] messangers of the King of Ireland came to the Danes to congratulate them on their victory over the Norwegian vikings, only to be horrified by the Danish vikings in full celebrations with vast cauldrons of meat being boiled over the dead bodies of the vanquished Norwegian vikings. The messangers immediately cried out in horror that the Danes "should not do such things", but such acts were an enshrined custom of victory over a vanquished enemy, and the Danes simply informed the Irish that the Norwegians would have done the same to them had they been the luckier part of the battle.

History / Is Poland a Slavic country?! (politics included) [90]

so the Northern Germans consider themselves "Nordic", the Bavarians more "Dinaric"?

What the hell is "Dinaric"?

How about you Berliners?? LOL

Berliners are a mixture of different breed. Notice that in the 19th a huge amount of people were immigrating to Berlin from all over Germany, and a lot of them from the lands east of the river Oder. For example, many areas had become virtually deserted in Lower Silesia as a result of the industrial revolution because weavers who inhabited entire villages could no longer find any work. Travellers depicted a countryside which looked as today's area around Tschernobyl!

Where do you think they had all moved? The answer is simple: Berlin.

Does "Pedalowac Polska" work?

Certainly it doesn't. The verb 'pedałować' has now acquired a new meaning denoting male homosexual activity. You don't remember Dirk's posts showing pictures of right-wing activists displaying a board with the "Tu jest Polska nie Bruksela, tu się pedałowania nie popiera" slogan?

The title is "Rowerem przez II RP", and here is the cover of this book:

Maybe I will, too. But I shall finish reading the sample before I do. What I would be particularly interested in are his remarks on Danzig, Lithuania and East Prussia of the time.

Do you know the title of the Polish translation, btw?

History / Polish history is 100% glorious [302]

The author toured around Poland, starting in the Freie Stadt Danzig, then going to Bydgoszcz, Toruń, Poznań, Warsaw, Łódź, the Upper Silesia, Kraków and Zakopane. Next he turned to the eastern borderlands, as they are known today, and - travelling from south to north - visited Lvov, Równe, Pińsk, Białowieża, Grodno and Wilno. Finally, he cycled across Lithuania down to the town of Memel (Kłajpeda) and next made a tour around East Prussia arriving in Danzig back again. So overall, it was a journey across three or even four, including the Freie Stadt, countries.

News / Good news: Poland's PiS to rule at least 12 years -- Morawiecki [91]

Merged:

Clairvoyant Jackowski on the political future of Poland's PM Mateusz Morawiecki

Mr. Morawiecki is a prominent figure as Prime Minister. And this is not the type of Mr. Kaczynski. Nor is he the type of many members of the current government's coalition. Mr. Morawiecki respects two people, two men who are stronger than the entire PiS. It's strange, but this is how I feel - said the clairvoyant Krzysztof Jackowski in the vision.

Two men are standing in front of him - says the clairvoyant about Mateusz Morawiecki. - I think that these men are not from the government. These two men are very close to everything that the prime minister does - he adds.

The coming 2-3 months will be a time of very strict decision-making by the prime minister, even in relation to what is happening now. Beware, I have such an impression that at some point, maybe even this year, the prime minister will be replaced - says Krzysztof Jackowski.

He will be exchanged for someone without a face - emphasizes Jackowski. - The prime minister knows perfectly well that such an exchange will take place - says the clairvoyant.

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

On July 28, 1914, one month to the day after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria

So you've now introduced the WW I for blaming Serbia for its outbreak?

First, Austria to be blamed for WW II and then Serbia to be blamed for WW I.

It seems that Germany had been towed away to the North Pole in the years 1914-1945 in order to safely wait the turbulent times out.

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

So it was the Austrians fault now.

Definitely...

Don't be silly. Tiny Austria wouldn't have been able to start a war on this scale.

There began to emerge a signifacant Nazi movement in the US at the time. Luckily, it was nipped in the bud. Britain's and France's policy of appeasement had its share as well. There were quite a few Nazi sympathizers in the British rotal family too..

Undoubtedly the German nation had been bemused by several Nazi tricks which found a perfect background in the harsh living conditions caused by the contributions imposed on Germany by the winning nations. And not the least, let's not forget the US with its age of speculation in the 1920s which had led to the crisis of the 1930s.

So stop being silly, everyone, by blaming poor Austria for all this.

Work / Working as a PL-EN translator - good idea? Sworn translators in Poland. [27]

When I last used it it was still having problems with declination not to mention finer aspects

Same with me. Indeed, they have made tremendous progress over the last years. Many people usually don't realize this as they haven't bothered to check since the time they tried it for the first time several years ago. They have been victims of a certain stereotype, namely that AI cannot be as good as humans in using the language !

It can ! And I'm sure that pretty soon the art of translation will become the domain of the AI. What is left out for the humans will be proof reading, but (who knows?) with the already enormous and ever increasing capacities of data bases and information technology even that may eventually be passed on to robots.

The AI revolution is one with consequences comparable only to those of the industrial revolution which at the time completely swept away the old world as it had existed before it. Personally, I think the effects of AI will be even more profound.

Work / Working as a PL-EN translator - good idea? Sworn translators in Poland. [27]

The authors have undertaken an analysis of the phenomenon of debt of local government units in Poland.

I've pushed this through Google Translate and it has handled it very well !
Autorzy podjęli się analizy zjawiska zadłużenia jednostek samorządu terytorialnego w Polsce.

I think that AI is gettting better and better at the art of translation. The tricky word for automated translation here was the word 'local' which GT aptly rendered as 'terytorialny'. Also, the word 'government' was translated as 'samorząd' rather than 'rząd'. GT obviously "analyzes" the context.

Genealogy / Am I of Polish or German descent? [10]

Unless I can prove that my parents, great grandparents or great, great grandparents obtained Polish citizenship after 1920

Possibly you may try to apply despite not having this condition fulfilled. Your Polish heritage seems pretty obvious in spite of the family having had the Prussian citizenship in the 19th century. But the more important fact is that your family hasn't had any formal;connection to Poland, or to Germany for that matter, since 1884 to support your claim..

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

Neuter, I suppose?

I think it has no singular, so it is either the "niemęskoosobowy" or perhaps the neuter gender. As it is incorrect to say 'Czechy jest pięknym krajem', you may well say 'Mamry jest dużym jeziorem' (or is it better to say 'Mamry są dużym jeziorem'?)..

I'd really recommend exploring the whole area, as it has a very very interesting feel about it

Quite recently I have bought myself a modern tourist map of the former Duchy of Teschen (Herzogtum Teschen). The Duchy of Cieszyn existed as an entity since 1290 and was divided only in 1918. A very interesting map as you can see on it how far the Duchy extended into the modern Polish or the modern Czech territory.
