Why? Do you naively believe that those politicians and that system set in Brussels is for them to actually do something useful? That region was a part of the Germany while it was ravaged by a chauvinistic totalitarians ideology. Grass was a German first and foremost, he was only playing with his second identity as Kaszubian being an artist and having attachment to the region.

Naturally Kaszubian belong to the Polish nation, not being Germanic or not being part of the Germany that long.
