Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

Look back and you'll see I was quoting something.

what I believe is you made it up with a limited knowledge of Polish fraseology and spelling

as Magdalena already pointed to you no native would write 'Murzyny do drewa' even in a grafitti

you can't tell how to spell 'drzewo' in Polish and you live here for good couple of years and claim to know some Polish - most English speaking foreigners give up learning Polish as it is too much of a headache for them and you tell Polish language is not impenetrable - some humility will serve you pretty well

Her point of view on English is every bit as valid as mine on Polish,

Magdalena's English is far better than your Polish John - face it

you couldn't even tell there are substantial errors in the sentence 'Murzyny do drewa'

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

Some of the posters here think it's acceptable - others think it is not.

it's only you and Harry who think that this word is unacceptable - and you are foreigners

I live in Poland (unlike you, you never even visit Poland)

oh man, you are a completely deluded bloke - I was born raised and live currently in Poland and lived most of my life here - and I haven't seen a black person in ages outside the TV

Those of us who actually live in Poland know that Poland gets more black by the day

Interestingly I don't believe you - so you say Poland has now 0,15 pro mille of blacks rather than 0,1 pro mille - where do they all come from and why they choose the land of the poor

the word Pollack is no longer neutral.

the word is neutral in my dictionary and in the dictionary of the most Poles - you are clearly a bigoted person

Dictionaries are constantly rewritten anyway to reflect the way languages constantly change.

And you will rewrite dictionaries for the Poles yes?? - thank you very much - call the EU for help - you won't achieve much on your own

the word Pollack is no longer neutral - if it ever was - there is a proper neutral word in English and this is a Pole - Murzyn is a proper neutral word to describe a black person in Polish - end of story - we won't change neutral words to suit the needs of the few

There are doubtless people who still say 'murzyn' without picking up on that - but as time goes on they are getting fewer and fewer.

once again murzyn is a neutral word - the derogative word for a black person is czarnuch - perhaps some black people in Poland object to being called murzyni but we won't change the language to suit the sensitivities (sick sensitivities) of the few

There's enough grumbling on this forum from Pol-Ams who dislike the word Pollack

I don't believe the word Pollack had ever neutral connotations - the neutral word and a proper word in English is a Pole - Murzyn is neutral as you can get in Polish and your philology doctor was a bigot

urban educated people avoid it

so what do they use instead? - there is no other originally Polish word to describe a black person of African origin which is no cumbersome - the word czarny has not very pleasant connotations

btw it's as if urban educated people cannot be bigots

Language / What computer keyboards are in use in Poland? [34]

I would have assumed there was a 'Polish Keyboard' as it massively slows down typing when using multiple keystrokes!

It doesn't slow down typing that much when you are used to it

Language / -ski/-ska, -scy/ski, -wicz - Polish surnames help [185]

Bigmick

I know it must be son of _____ but do not know for sure I

your guess is right it is the son of - in this case it is the son of Mitko (Mitko is not a regular first (could have been a nickname I guess) name neither in Polish nor in Belarusian - this is actually a Belarusian or Ruthenian surname)

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

on or -oń has no particular role in contemporary Polish as a suffix - perhaps it was different in past ages - I know this suffix only from personal names like Nocoń, Kocoń to be honest

someone who comes from the village of Pierścianów (possibly the name of the noble owner of the village but not necessarily) - the name Pierścianów comes from the old Slavic name for finger

Law / Why is Poland importing so much coal? [76]

imported coal is simply cheaper as it is mined from open-pit mines - what is more Poland has not enough coke-grade coal and we must import it

Life / Professional feminists' of Poland meet-up [631]

per capita, Poland is still in the top 4 of beneficiaries.

where did you get it from - I have seen official data for the years 2004 - 2010 and it clearly stated that Poland was third lowest per capita beneficiary

Which is understandable, given the large population of Poland versus many other countries with significantly smaller populations.

I don't understand why is it so obvious to you - why not make it all receive the same per capita - the difference is significant as far as I can rembemer like more than 10 per cent

Even the largest net beneficiary by far.

not per capita

the only countries that receive less per capita than Poland are Romania and Bulgaria

Language / Why is the Polish language so difficult? [309]

As much as you try, you're not never going to escape the fact that Poland is not some small backwater.

Poland is not a small backwater - it is a big backwater :)

I've just learnt that Morozowski is Jewish!

so is Sekielski I guess

Morozowski is Jewish, don't actually know about Sekielski
