the Wren Boys who come out on St Stephen's Day

That sounds nice.

I've always fancied seeing a Mari Lwyd in Wales. The horses' skulls on the pole look sinister

It existed in my part of Yorkshire but sadly died out.

Kitsch, but nice kitsch.

Polonia / Polish bus crash in Croatia. Is there a fate? [227]

He will probably never drive a truck

He shouldn't ever drive anything again.

That should be more common. The third drink driving and/or the tenth speeding ticket should mean a life ban.

Always on after the pub. I think I saw every episode. Plus the stage show when it came to Bradford.

Quite a few of the cast were British by birth. Bea Smith, Lizzie Birdsworth and I think the Freak.

Polonia / Polish bus crash in Croatia. Is there a fate? [227]

50 cars destroyed, 26 injured, many seriously injured

That's presumably this one in Neuss.

If he was drinking or on anything else, it will be a long sentence.

Several lorry drivers from Eastern Europe have been caught in the U.K. using phones while driving. It's usually jail even if there's no accident, and if there's an accident, they pretty well throw the key away.

For me there are two records that sum up Christmas

I have to hear the Slade song before it truly feels Christmassy.

I hope this wasn't in your mother's house ;)

No, in my own. On that street newly arrived residents were sometimes surprised to get back from work and find their post in a neat pile on the kitchen table. An elderly neighbour (some people used to call her 'the sheet sniffer') had lots of people's keys and used them even after new people moved in.

A strong sense of community.

Life / Things that annoy you in Poland. [133]

I have absolutely no problem with being called "Prosze Pana", in fact I find it very polite.

The same. Personally I prefer 'Ty' but if someone says 'Pan', that's fine.

I'm from a place that was always thee and tha but don't hear it much now since I don't go to the hardcore ex coal mining places much any more. A while ago I was in Castleford and got some fish and chips near the Burberry factory. When the lady in the shop called me thee I nearly cried from nostalgia.

Life / UFOs in Poland [51]

Trump, RFK, Musk etc.

Or any other politicians elsewhere.

Most of the noise about UFOs comes out of America however if aliens were visiting, it's hard to think of any particular reason they'd go there as opposed to China with the largest and fastest growing cities or the European industrial crescent (roughly Manchester to Milan with the Ruhr/Rhein and a few other bits inbetween) the most developed part of the world and with the most consistent cultural and technological output.

I blame Hollywood for the fascination for UFOs, a blurring of fact and fiction. That and a high level of religious observance, people 'believing' rather than analysing.

True though; it's a place where there aren't so much neighbours as people who live too close.

Compared with Yorkshire where people on your street traditionally walk into your house without knocking, it's a breath of fresh air and something I quite like.

Years ago, I was once having it off with the milkman (seriously, it really was the milkman) very noisily on the hall floor. The kitchen door was slighty open. When we'd finished I found a Tupperware box with a Swiss Roll in and some charity raffle tickets on the kitchen table.

It's actually a nice gesture and as I say, brightens up someone's front parlour. Though in PL since nobody seems to like their neighbours and micro aggressions are almost a national sport, I'm surprised people don't do what we sometimes do to neighbours we don't like, sending them a particularly naff card or one from the Woolwooth's 1p rack.

That is why I chose Poland for my home country

Probably biology did that.

Life / Polish Music. [298]

This rather wholesome looking young man is called Diugcello. He's Polish and plays popular songs on a cello. He also works with hip hop artistes.

Life / Profoundly Peculiar and Perplexing Proclivities: Probing PRL Personality Patterns Paraded in Public [16]

Now, provide a 3 line summary of this blabber

An oldish book called "Uncle Setnakh's Letters to a Young Satanist" says it in one line, and has a few more tips besides. Worth reading and the author nowadays follows a less radical spiritual path. A very nice guy in fact, lives in Texas.

If he's trying to be witty it just comes across as verbose and somewhat jejeune and heavy.. He needs to be more sparing with prose and also include less of the political stuff which is a bore.

Strzelec, who used to post here, had a good prose style. Some of his stuff under an earlier username about the mean streets of Dąbrowa Górniczą were well written.

Food / Polish food vs Ukrainian food [31]

20% on average for domestic use. :):

Which is probably better than most places in PL. Plus of course there are still people in Ukraine who have a choice between growing food and starving.

big compani

That's the way of the world.

erroneous

Ot really since poverty there keeps some crops cleaner.

Poland has embraced chemicals in a big way, and of course UPFs have long been a part of the diet in PL.

It's just the same, Paw. It all comes from the same wholesalers and they all want to maximise crop yields.

matter. I hate the waste!

Me too however old people like them and poorer people's homes 60 years ago or less were very bare so the cards brought a little colour.

I still keep all those cards which American friends sent

Finding old ones written by dead loved ones is a nice thing. Seeing their name again.

A priest I know always keeps the cards he gets so he can compare the handwriting on them to that on the anonymous letters he gets, denouncing other parishioners or with mucky stuff about him from lady admirers.
