this is the source of the problem - bad dictionary translations - with an intention to match word to word which does not always work

the person who put this translation in this dictionary is an idiot: en.bab.la/dictionary/polish-english/murzyn

The English language tends to avoid nouns to describe ethnicity - they certainly exist however their use (where they refer to skin colour) is less and less popular. It seems that this (whether you like it or not) is happening in Polish too.

you are completely wrong - Poles will never say angielski instead of Anglik or Angielka - this is only in your imagination

the problem is not with the Polish language but with the English language which lacked a neutral word for people of black skin

there is no good replacement of the word murzyn in Polish language anyway - czarnoskóry is not a good word in Polish - czarny is even worse

He seemed to be very surprised by this, and to be honest I really don't think he meant it in a racist way at all as i saw no signs of him being racist and he got on well with my stepdaughter.

he was surprised because in Polish the word mulat is neutral and book word for a person of mixed black and white race - just like the word murzyn - and I won't stop using the word murzyn just because some foreigners have the misconception that it is somehow racist - and I believe most Poles will do just the same

what I believe is you made it up with a limited knowledge of Polish fraseology and spelling

as Magdalena already pointed to you no native would write 'Murzyny do drewa' even in a grafitti

you can't tell how to spell 'drzewo' in Polish and you live here for good couple of years and claim to know some Polish - most English speaking foreigners give up learning Polish as it is too much of a headache for them and you tell Polish language is not impenetrable - some humility will serve you pretty well

Interestingly I don't believe you - so you say Poland has now 0,15 pro mille of blacks rather than 0,1 pro mille - where do they all come from and why they choose the land of the poor

Dictionaries are constantly rewritten anyway to reflect the way languages constantly change.

There are doubtless people who still say 'murzyn' without picking up on that - but as time goes on they are getting fewer and fewer.

once again murzyn is a neutral word - the derogative word for a black person is czarnuch - perhaps some black people in Poland object to being called murzyni but we won't change the language to suit the sensitivities (sick sensitivities) of the few

I don't believe the word Pollack had ever neutral connotations - the neutral word and a proper word in English is a Pole - Murzyn is neutral as you can get in Polish and your philology doctor was a bigot

so what do they use instead? - there is no other originally Polish word to describe a black person of African origin which is no cumbersome - the word czarny has not very pleasant connotations

btw it's as if urban educated people cannot be bigots

your guess is right it is the son of - in this case it is the son of Mitko (Mitko is not a regular first (could have been a nickname I guess) name neither in Polish nor in Belarusian - this is actually a Belarusian or Ruthenian surname)

on or -oń has no particular role in contemporary Polish as a suffix - perhaps it was different in past ages - I know this suffix only from personal names like Nocoń, Kocoń to be honest
