News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

Children are no moral agents but they have a kind of protected status.

why not unborn children then? because someone decided so? on what grounds?
as I said if a freshly born child is a person why not the child 10 hours before birth

they are essentially parasitic in nature and you can't grant them rights without grievously impinging on the rights of women.

are infants not parasitic - can they survive on their own?

On medical matters, doctors are the experts, not clergy.

you clearly don't understand the implications of what I said - and I never said clergy are the most competent on the issue - it just takes some thought

and of course you still avoid disclosing when you think human life starts

I recently have heard a story about a doctor encouraging parents to have an abortion because the twins in question were not very developed - the parents decided otherwise and the mother gave birth to two healthy even if petite girls - that's how infallible doctors are

oh doctors are infallible, no?

and what do the doctors say about when human life begins - you are clearly avoiding the issue

what do doctors have to say about an infant being a 'moral agent' - why can't we kill already born babies - can they live on their own?

beats me I'm not going to pretend to you, my gut feeling is that the beginning of human life is a process and not an event

what is a moral agent to you - is a freshly born infant a moral agent to you - does it have enough consciousness to make moral choices?

if it is not a moral agent according to some definitions why aren't we allowed to kill it - it can't live on its own, can it?

you want to compromise on something you supposedly regard as murder?

punishment for crimes should not be a vengance - it should have preventative value - to prevent people who are criminals from offending more also to prevent those who consider turning criminal from choosing that way - in case of abortion the threat of doctors to be punished is enough to save lives

for abortions not to take place in a country with zero abortion hipocrisy it is enough for the doctors to be punishable for performing them - no need for women to be punished - and it is about saving precious lives and not about the need and urge to punish anybody

I still don't know your stance on when human life begins

what other things they believe to be very serious crimes are in fact things they're willing to compromise on for political expediency..

it's easy - abortion would not be banned and lifes would be lost if we demanded that women should be punished for having them which in itself is a very unpopular notion amongst women

much easier that Groundhog Day.

easier for you sure - if you don't want to determine yourself publically - not for me: the thread has more than 1000 answers now

That has been discussed ad nauseam in this thread

I haven't been part of the discussion in this thread so far - and I ask you personally - cause you are sure abortion is not ending of a human life

Either it's taking human life (of course it isn't) or you compromise, not both.

when does human life start then - with the birth, ten hours before birth? ten days before birth? ten weeks before birth? when?

Would this be retro-active?

punishing women for abortions is a sure vote sinker - we need to make compromises in life

Written like a member in good-standing of the He-man Woman Haters Club.

what was hateful in what Polonius stated - I don't get it - self mutilation and suicide are not punished by Polish law

Or do you simply not regard women as moral agents capable of making their own moral decisions?

if you decide to murder someone it is a moral decision - should the society be restrained for punishing you for that?

Language / The "end piece" of a loaf of bread in Polish [80]

My favourite cake in Poland was the one that was like a roll with honey and poppy seeds.....lovely!

one of my favourites too - but Americans beware you won't pass drug test after eating poppy seed cake - it contains traces of opiates

Well I only know French, German and Irish, each of which have separate words for cake, pastry and dough.

I don't know Atch - are you trying to prove something?
like your preconception that Polish cuisine has no cake tradition?

a shame that to you the only important thing is that the child is born, with no thought given as to the quality of life the child will have.

-Polish law allows now for children with suspected Down syndrome to be aborted - PiS will probably work on banning such eugenic abortions - do you think a person with a Down syndrome doesn't have the right to live - what do you think about the quality of life of a person with Down syndrome?

and a majority of the country wants no changes to the current law as the ruling party finally figured out..

PiS are bad with PR - if they were better they would already be showing children with down and preparing the ground for the law which they intend to pass which will ban most eugenics abortion

but what right do you have to make decisions

was murder always agreed upon as morally unacceptable? - look at the WW 2nd if you don't want to go any deeper - In Hitler Germany it was no offence to kill a Jew - so the notion of what is moral and what is moral was not universal even for murder

btw you know what democracy is? - it's the rule of the majority - if a majority decides that something is unacceptable and should be punished in this way or another then it is the law - end of dispute

there was a specific term for a cake in Polish before and it is still regional in parts of Poland or refers to a specific type of a cake - the name is kołacz

nowadays ciasto can both mean dough and cake (perhaps even pastry as in French pastry)

I think the sourer one is lighter in colour

sour cherries are typically dark when really ripe - sweet cherries are much more varied - they can be very light (yellow with a red blush), red, or even almost black (various varieties) - from a biological point of view sour cherries and sweet cherries are two different species - it is easy to tell appart a sour cherry and sweet cherry tree (the leaves are distinctively different - but also the size and shape of the trees is different)

In England the majority of bread is made from wheat flour, whereas in Poland rye flour is mainly used.

it's not entirely correct - typical Polish bread is a mixed one with wheat and rye flour and typically you have more wheat flour in the mixture (the leaven used is typically purely rye though) - pure rye bread (or bread with the dominance of rye flour) is not common in Poland (I like it very much though) - it uses a lot more leaven and can be quite sour - I once had excellent rye bread with caraway in the Italian Tirol - they also have very good rye bread in Eastern Germany from what I observed

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

abortion is illegal in most cases in Poland and doctors who perform abortions can face jail time if caught - there was widespread hypocrisy in Poland when it comes to abortion though and underground clinics were tolerated - I don't know about the current situation

and yes I am for jail penalty for doctors who do it in cases that are not allowed by the law

Not 'who', but what. Facts, not religious make-believe.

John I haven't found the exact figures for Poland - but according to Daiy Mail the percentage of teenage mothers in the UK where there is a lot of sexual education is higher than in Poland where there is almost nil sexual education - looks like your simple mechanism doesn't work

they should show the same respect to those who might one day want to exercise that right.

are we supposed to respect the right to murder people - from what I have heard we put murderers in jails

Bravo Kijowski, Petru & Schetyna!!! Maybe you will have achieved yet another rating-agency downgrade.

you know Polonius these guys preach PiS rule is catastrophic to Poland so you understand the worse for Poland now the better for them (at least they hope so) but we'll see

Travel / Need advice on trip to Poland [21]

Tell me where it is and I might be able to help.

she said it is near Kolno - Kolno is near (north of) Łomża - i am not sure if trains still reach Łomża (they used to) - anyway I think it would be better to rent a car to travel in the area (it is not very developed and in recent years many bus services have been cancelled)

Law / Not having a car insurance for a little while in Poland [13]

I'm wondering if I can just postpone paying for a insurance renewal.

if you don't use a car there wouldn't be legal problems (if it safely parked especially on a private property) - but as Looker said the continuity must be preserved - so your company will demand from you the payment for all the time you haven't been in Poland - if you have the resources now just pay the OC (they usually want you to pay for half-a-year periods anyway)

Law / Not having a car insurance for a little while in Poland [13]

AC or OC

AC - Auto Casco - non-compulsory
OC -ubezpieczenie od Odpowiedzialności Cywilnej (odpowiedzialność cywilna = legal liability) - compulsory

odpowiedzialność cywilna = legal liability)

actually more like civil liability according to bab.la examples

Life / Why Polish Diminutives/Nicknames are so popular? [14]

it can be a nickname derived from his family name and not the first name - it is fairly common in Poland - his surname though could not be very popular and it's difficult to extrapolate it from the nickname

Law / Need help on how to cancel a company in Poland. [8]

-limited liability company [5000 zloty capital.

dissolving a limited liability company is not a straightforward process in Poland - you need to see a lawyer here as it involves going to a court

News / Mieszkania Plus programme - PiS fulfills yet another campaign promise [50]

Seen it, but the changes that will come into force in July will only bring 15 billion in revenue according to the forecasts.

I believe it is just a first step - there will be more savings to the budget when restrictive law is enforced calling for taking over of all possessions of the scammers - I believe PiS wait for having control over the Constitutional tribunal to pass such laws - it's not that long only half a year to go
