Life / Child abuse in Poland [64]

Here you go, defending the church. One of my teacher colleagues was done for child filth on his computer. He was banged up double sharp I can tell you - cut and dried within 6 weeks. He obviously should have spent 7 years in theological college - then he wouldn't have spent any time in prison. And there is a world of difference in the essential question oif betrayal of trust, between priests or school teachers sexually abusing children and a supposedly similar percentage of lorry drivers doing the same.

Parents trust the first two with their children, but would be astonished if a lorry driver said "I need to take your child for an hour of extra tuition, or whatever....."

Watch the film Ironside - then comment.

The usual platitudes from Kaczynski and the church:

prosecutors and police together with the government really need to take a more proactive role.....

It's not going to happen. Not until, as I suggested, through video evidence, an independent police force can bust the church door down. That's the power of a catholic country for you. They really do believe they are above the law, and actually are.

There are many clerics

Good people. Unfortunately, like the police, priests and school teachers should by rights be wearing body cameras some day in the not too distant future. Full accountability.

Life / Child abuse in Poland [64]

I was hoping that the husband would stamp on the old mans' head. The tempatation must have been there. But there is no justice. Stay away from an archaic religion as much as you can that still insists on celibacy. In this sexualised world that is never going to be in any way "normal."

they would take the kids on 'holiday'.

Yes. Very true. There is a no through road in Olkusz (Czarny Las) where my pal had a country cottage. As isolated as the Jura Krakowska gets. The woodland property 200 meters away was all boarded up but well tended every time we went there.

I asked my pal who owned the property (some business person..?) With a grim amused smirk on his face, he said, "Oh no, that belongs to the church. That's where the priests bring their boys". If we were playing poker I would have put my money down to see his cards, as he was a joker. Only we wasn't bluffing that time.

Tylko ne mów nikomu

Yes - as is the case in a lot of schools, there should be video cameras inside the churches, but that will never happen. There would be less lucrative cases for the state and its' lawyers.

If my daughter has a son there is no way she will be letting him anywhere near those blighters, until there is video surveillance.

Life / The climate for gardening in Poland [291]

I've tried craft beers brewed with Polish hops - not so positive. Must be the climate, or the soil maybe? Saar hops from Bohemia win every time (or British of course!)

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1400]

Are you going to eat it on your own

Yes! No one but me likes liver:)
Like you, I was brought up on it. I saute it with onions, and al dente cabbage (sadly out of season...) and mashed potato. Lashings of Worcestershire sauce, and there you have a meal made for a king:)

Now we know where you bought your watrobka; )

I found a Biedronka where the staff are extremely pleasant:) :)

History / Modern myths and legends about communist past in Poland [227]

"Mechanics and technically minded people could fix anything on the cheap.."
The reality being that all was low tech, there were no authentic spare parts, and a hammer would sometimes do the trick, as on wife's cousins' Trabant starter motor:) To be fair my Austin Morris had the same lazy starter problem.

a nice set of meblościanka

All in the ubiquitous communist fake brown veneer. What the f was the obsession with the colour brown for? Why not red? :):)

One thing that is not a myth. Washing machines. My MIL had hers' for 30 years, and it never saw a repair man. Apparently she was not alone, or lucky. The thing was (rather) noisy though and shook da house.

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1158]

where you claim to have been and what you claim to have done.

Every little bit helped back then - every packet of something unobtainable, every letter, phone call, every tiny action against the machine, every little lack of co-operation, every opportunity to laugh in their faces, at every kind of authority, whether they were police, people's deputies, or rude bureaucrats.

And who are you to say that was a waste of time? You'll be suggesting next that Walesa sitting on the Gdansk shipyard gates was a waste of time?

PolAm basement living clown.

Thanks for admitting that leftist economic policies are always hollow promises doomed for failure.

What are you on about?
Communism was total authoritarianism. Not that you know anything about it.
I was here IN Poland, where you have never been, and was involved in the struggle against the communist government, supporting my wife's family, so don't lecture me you turd.

Democracy and the right to collective bargaining have nothing to do with that. What do you do for a living anyway? Last time I heard, little boys in a liberal democracy were not forced to work

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1158]

Nothing is perfect and there are cons too.

Name them. I can't see any negative s that outweigh the benefits. Unless people are desperate to hang onto their power base.
Personal situations aside, EU accession means that Poland finally has social justice, investment, multi-nationals, freedom of movement, EU investment ( a mere 100 billion Euros), shared know-how, shared security, a place at the decision making table. etc, etc ad finitum.

You show me the tangible negatives and I can learn.

Pros: In the thousands.
Cons: None at all.
Poland after war ruin and 49 years of state theft was a complete and utter shambles.
A passable market economy ( Poland will always resist true market economics) was the only way.
Just visit Elblag. A phoenix risen from the ashes.
EU money.

Love / Why do Polish guys stare a lot? And what does that mean? [14]

I assume

The OP should also assume that his stare is nothing unusual. Some Poles were never corrected by their betters and shown that it is rude to stare. Unless she/he (the OP) enjoys being stared at, that is.

I would wager a bet that all of these "love letters" to PF are written by the same old lonely Polonia lady as a Mills and Boon cop out - the situations can't be real.

sad to hear that you suffered bowel cancer

Sorry to disabuse you Milo. It was my mum I was referring to. I would have swapped places with her if I could - but of course anybody would think the same. There's no good way to lose that person who brought you into this world.

PS That's why I love Easter so much. It's like a rebirth; whereas catholics have All Souls Day, I prefer to celebrate my parents' memory at Easter. Garden and sun, and all that.

sampled some wedliny at a Polish fair here in New Jersey!

Sorry to have to tell you this Lyzko... Polish "wedliny" results in at least 20 percent higher incidences of bowel cancer. Now, having first hand experience of that, I would not wish that on my worst enemy (a tad trite, as all our love ones die of something..)

Religious holidays - OK... but knowing what I know now - no processed pork otherwise for my family thanks very much.

Lyzko...

Actually Lyzko - I bow to superior intellect. Carry on regardless, as you are still young. One of Britain's' kitchen sink drama longest lasting cast members (she is 92) has this to say about being careful what you eat post a certain age....she suggests to just carry on (because after all, some Polish cold cuts are justifiably world-class...a "whole" Sopocka - akin to a whole animal - being my favourite in past times...)

I tried horseradish... and it wasn't very good. I don't know why Poland does it better than other countries .....

Grow it in the garden, or your allotment. One theory from my father-in-law was that the plant needs very cold temperatures to lie dormant and regain it's "powers" but really not too sure what the secret is - maybe as with most tubers, divide and replant, but the horseradish in our garden in Dabrowa Gornicza is FIERCE:)

Grate and mix with sour cream, or beetroot juice.

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1040]

proverb refers to couples who have been married/partners for some time

Strictly speaking, yes, Pawian, but you are are being pedantic....
Only a Polish poem could be so hopelessy romantic and not of this age, akin to a seventies song by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis "You don't have to be a star.." Just as soppy, but more fun than poetry. Both of them are nonsense more often than not. No money - no romance.

I haven`t got too much cash or property,

The writer obviously never heard of the English proverb: "When poverty comes in the door, love flies out the window." But then, that wouldn't be prose, would it?

And hares.

Beautiful animals. Please don't hurt them Pawian, for they soothe the soul. I have taught my dog that all natural animals are his friends and he loves trotting alongside the boars in our forest.

News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

the leftists are for abortion

Is anybody ever "for" abortion? Let's ask the women. It's their bodies, and their choice. Unless you live in medieval times, that is.

pork

Pork causes cancers Pawian. Poles should be educated about this proven fact.

To be honest I struggle with bread in UK

Absolutely. British "£bread" is exactly that. Big business. Bake it yourself. My mum baked cracking bread. Easy to do.

Jon, we used to catch pike on the Thames at Hampton Court/Sudbury on the punts. Mrs Dougpol was a dab hand ( the secret is in soaking for 24 hours with leeks and other root vegetables) Then braise for 3/4 hours gas mark 180 according to size. Magnificent tucker.

I would say it is different price range.

Probably 2 zl per 100 grammes. Sorry but I've come to the conclusion that fish and chips are generally overpriced in Poland.

I think Fish n Chips from Yorkshire are the best there is

Yes. You do know that Grimsby was the largest fishing port in the world at one time? East coast of Scotland fish and chip are tops too!

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1400]

I recently compared fish and chips (sit-down restaurant) in both Poland (Gdansk) and Britain (Southport, near Liverpool)

Polish fish and chips (halibut) very good (batter stiff, fish tasting as it should...slightly oily flavour..) Chips correct, a bit tasteless, hard on the outside, soft inner. plus the usual token salad.....plus tea - times 2 = 120 zlotys ( 25 pounds)

British fish and chips - same sizes (haddock) excellent (better batter, that you could batter your MP with, fresh as) Chips absolutely as they should be - crisp but with a soft interior - plus mushy peas (small portions:( 2 teas = 15 pounds.

Whoever said Britain was expensive.? Fish and chip deffo superior in the UK.

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [940]

Well, I am a great fan of testing and examining.

Just to stick my oar in Pawian. There was far too much Test, teach, test teaching in the schools I worked in during the early 90s. I used to get ticked off by the director for spending more of the monthly hours on PPP lessons (Presentation, controlled practice. free practice) with the associated happy noise. The result was that my A2 groups could use more language in situational practice than other groups which had more teacher led lessons.

Life / Polish folk remedy for styes? [12]

I have been to see my doctor twice in 10 days, She's Ukranian. With blue eyes. I haven't been able to eat since I first saw her. And the Wisla looks blue - like the Danube does in Vienna.......... Of course it might be because she misread the symptoms and is in fact poisoning me.

And maybe Poles take a fancy to their doctors too? They sure do keep going back:)
