Language / Nice Polish phrases to say to men [76]

My little treasure.

As a guy I'd prefer to hear "Mój ogromny, gigantyczny skarbenku..." ;)

Yeah, any of those compliments would've been great! Don't even care about the pronunciation so much, the effort is 90% of the job. Sake kills my brain cells!!

Love / Ten things to remember when you have a Polish girlfriend [79]

Hope you enjoyed this article that I found. Truth is I am getting married to my Polish Girl in July :)

Congrats to you both! How did you two meet?

As far as "your" article, a link would've been nice. I thought those were your own thoughts and tried to figure out how to click on that Wyspianski blog link. :)

History / Why Poles love Russia [105]

...On the other hand Russia, as far as its PEOPLE, deserve credit in my opinion, for showing sincere sympathy for the Polish people during the Polish Crash tragedy.

Which is pretty much the sentiment of my earlier post (have no idea where it went). Some Russians here, Constantine comes to mind have been much less than sympathetic even after the accident BUT I view them as a tiny minority and chose to believe most Russians think like Sasha instead.

Good post

Good for what, sky? :) To keep the fire burning?

No, not at all. I just think it was a good summary of why the distrust exists. It's not about keeping the fire burning but about remembering what went wrong. I think for a friendly relationship between two nations there must be a mutual trust. ...and that takes years to develop and it cannot be tied to specific leaders, it must be genuine. Look at the Sweden-Finland, Sweden-Norway, Norway-Denmark, etc. relations. They have their disagreements but their friendships are much more powerful than their disagreements. You study the Scandinavian cultures so you understand what I'm talking about.

Do you feel that Kremlin's initial response to the credit card theft espoused trust? Don't you think that they turned an allegedly criminal matter into a political matter for no reason whatsoever? What if this was the Russian president's plane? ...and no, I do not wish that upon him or anyone else. However for the sake of our discussion, wouldn't you say the initial response would've been something like "we hope the reports are untrue but please let us investigate this further..." rather than "...the accusations are blasphemous!..."

What's feeding the "fire" is not rememberance of past wrongs but rather the illogical, sometimes self-defeating behavior of the Kremlin administration. The day Poles feel that the Kremlin treats Poles just like their own people, like true friends, the fire will extinguish. Russia is much stronger and Russia has been the bully for generations. Therefore Russia must lead the reapproachement and must understand that trust will not be won overnight.

At least that's my take on it.

Hmm, not sure why you're using racial slurs here?? Yes, the mayor of Malmö, frankly the entire leftist political elite of Malmö are racist jerks, no doubt about it. The massive immigration of Arabs, Iranians and Palestinians to Sweden and Malmö in particular has made Jew hating very popular in that city, I guess that's what you're refering to? Still unsure about why you had to use the racial slur in your post?

As far as the Finnish comment I have no idea what you're refering to. I lived with a girl from Finland, half her family lived in Sweden and many had done so for generations. We talked about politics all the time and not once did I hear about some kind of pre-war racism. If anything they always talked about the Russian threat. Swedes died fighting on the Finnish side defending Finland from the Russian invasion. Does racism exist in both countries? Sure, it does so in every country but after having been around so many Finnish families for so many years I doubt you'll find many other countries this friendly toward each other.

Frankly I have no idea why you attacked me here? Swedenland? Niggas? What the heck, are you nazi or something? Strange... You turned a joke and a question about linguistical differences into racism.

History / Why Poles love Russia [105]

Very similar except the numbers. I speak Swedish fluently (raised in Sweden) but my sister lives in Norway. Some Norwegians use the German way of counting money (22 -> two and twenty and others will say twenty two), Swedes only use the standard way of counting numbers. Often I'll speak Swedish and they'll speak Norwegian and usually there's no problem in understanding. Similar to British and American English in a way. Some Norwegians want you to believe the difference is far greater but I don't think so.

All Scandinavian languages: Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Islandic are Germanic languages or Northern Germanic to be precise just like English is except English (and German) are called Western Germanic so the sentence structures are fairly similar.

Language / Nice Polish words to say to a girl [147]

skysoulmate you're so right, thanks for the advice :)
finally some guy who had taken this seriously..

You're welcome. I think men and women are pretty similar in a way, we all want to feel very special and appreciated. So being nice, friendly and showing interest is never wrong.

Disclaimer - I don't really know crap about women or I wouldn't be divorced but that's my view.

C3po - not sure if you speak any Polish at all (I do but at a preteen's level) but I think women (and men) like compliments even if what you say is not entirely correct in that language, sometimes not even close to being correct. ;)

A while back I saw this Japanese airport security agent and found her very attractive; especially her eyes which were simply mesmerizing, I'm not sure why I found her eyes so fascinating but they're light blue/brown and deep as an ocean. Anyways, I'd run into her several times and she always seemed to find an excuse to show us around and was just so very friendly so one day I figured I'd try my Japlish on her and said something like you have beautiful eyes, or so I thought. She giggled as apparently I said her head was beautiful. :) Oh well, she got a kick out of it and each time we get in she smiles at me and looks like she's hoping for more of my botched Japanese.

So translate your English compliments word by word if you want, often it's the effort that counts.

News / "POLISH death camps" term used by "Parade Magazine" Anti-Polish Bigots [249]

It was a terrible, terrible time that we cannot even imagine. Frankly the whole idea of what nationality suffered the most is so irrelevant. Had Hitler gotten his way all Jews and all central European Slavs would've been exterminated sooner or later. The Soviets/Russians would've made sure that whatever was left of Poles would've been sent to the Gulags or killed of in the Ljubljanka prison and the Nazis would've gone after the Russians untile they're all gone.... Ironically the Nazi and the Soviet ideologies were so close. The sad part is that as much as people suffered under Nazi Germany it pales when compared to the Soviet tyranny yet that past of WWII is seldom even talked about.

My main point is that if you look at the whole picture, the many generations of the Polish/Jewish interaction, it was overwhelmingly a good and a positive interaction with respect on both sides. The distrust and in some cases hate and vengeance became a later phenomenon. We need to go back to the time Jews and Poles trusted each other and cherished and appreciated the same neighborhoods. More things unite than divide the two communities.

I also, twice, had a conversation with journalists about this issue

Good BZ. Imagine if 100 Bzibziohs and 100 skysoulmates had called, emailed, faxed the very same journalists all on the same day. This forum alone has more power than we realize...

News / "POLISH death camps" term used by "Parade Magazine" Anti-Polish Bigots [249]

In my opinion it is totally unjust for that rag to refer to them as Polish Death Camps

Thank you. Yeah, in my opinion the much louder minority is very noticeable but they're still a minority. Most Poles and Jews get along just fine, most cherish their own customs and traditions while respecting their neighbors' customs and traditions. Occasionally people focus more on one incident or another to prove that their side was more right than the other side. The truth is, both sides were the real victims. Both the Jews and the Poles were brutalized and used by other powers for their own political purposes. Therefore instead of bickering and arguing over who suffered the most they should say, enough of this BS, let's go back to the basics once again and do something we'd managed so well for hundreds of years - be good neighbors and friends.

If there's one thing I'd disagree with you in your post it'd be the Polish government taking a challenge when the German or Nazi camps are being called Polish. I think you and I should do it, not the government. Imagine if every member of this site, whether Polish or Jewish or German for that matter was to email the editor of whatever publication that makes the error? What if this would spread to other websites where people discuss history? The protests should be tactful and to the point but nevertheless it's we, the people and not our governments who should protest. At least that's my opinion.

PS. I've emailed many websites about similar issues before. Sometimes they reply and sometimes they don't but I always feel better about knowing I tried to make a change.

I respect your effort Skysoulmate for trying to be fair to the Jewish people

I see your point and agree, an effort is needed on both sides. The reason so many Jews settled in Poland is because of the very liberal and welcoming constitution Poland had in the past, in fact it was a very unique document.

As far as hoping for "Jewish soulmates". About a decade ago a had a chance to train with an Israeli officer. When he found out my herritage I got to listen to all kinds of stories about his relatives who used to live in today's Belarus but at the time Polish areas. We spent some 7 weeks together and all I ever heard was nostalgy and pure adoration for that part of his relatives' past. He was as in love with Poland as one could be and it wasn't to please me, I could sense his sincerity.

Yes, there are many soulmates on both sides but they're drowned out by those full of hate.

I probably should have created a Polish-Jewish friendship thread by posting this blog but got too busy. I emailed this lady a few days ago and she wrote me back, a very nice JEWISH lady who has a high opinion of Poland. Imagine that. She had the date wrong for the constitution day but please read the full article. She's a Jewish skysoulmate if you so will. :)

News / "POLISH death camps" term used by "Parade Magazine" Anti-Polish Bigots [249]

I'm not even gonna bother react to some of the posters on this thread. Apparently it's all the Jews fault again and I am being challenged for even daring to say that where two fight two are wrong.

I must say there's lots and lots of anti-Jewish drivel on PF. Heck, create a thread on the beauty of flowers and I bet you'll get some moronic posts claiming flowers would've been so much prettier had it not been for the Jews. I'm exaggerating to make a point.

Some use the current political events in Israel as an excuse to spew out their venom. Not all of course, and there's some valid critisism toward the state of Israel but many love the fact they can now openly profess their disgust with the Jews.

Surely, like you said both sides might have valid claims but there's a deep ingrained anti-Jewish bias amongst many, not all, but many Poles (and other nationalities too). Many, many years ago my grandfather had a conversation with his friend about the difficulties of getting some parts for their farm equipment. I was a kid so I don't remember the full conversation and part of it I didn't understand, but what I do remember is that somehow "ci Żydzi" had something to do with it. At the time I simply believed in everything he said but now, many years later I've realized that my grandfather, who's no longer with us, was as rasist as it gets. He might have had some valid reasons for his feelings, who knows? I'll always cherish my memories of him but I also know that he was a rasist nevertheless.

I guess I should've said "flown in supplies..."

Guantanamo was a good solution at the time. Prisons in their home countries would be a better permanent solution unless proven that the person was innocent and simply happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm sure there've been such cases too.

Back to the subject of... What was it again?

It's the goddam Jews again. Again, this is why I don't like them. I guess we should call Guantanamo "American concentration camps".

Has nothing to do with the Jews and I have nothing against them.

I've been to Guantanamo several times and if it is a "concentration camp" then every Polish prison is a gas chamber.

It's a storage location for thugs. Many who've been released have killed numerous innocent people since then. I'm glad they're where they are and it's pretty telling that the "let's close Guantamo within 12 months" president slowed things down when he realized the type of scum we're storing in there. That's right, storing because the Geneva convention, which I have read did not then and never will apply to them. In a way I wish we'd sent them all to the Afghanis for their 5-star treatment...

I will say in fairness to all American Jews, for some reason this Anti-Polish slander comes mostly from Left-wing Jewish writers like Parade Magazine's Blumenthal or the left-wing Anti-Polish lunatics at the New York Times and not so much from Conservative American Jews in the media.

Yeah, that's very true.

The idea of calling those camps Polish is just ludicrous.

It's like saying BMW and Mercedes are both Polish brands because so many Polish prisoners were forced to work for those companies during WWII.

Imagine if the descendants of the African slaves here in America were called Africans today. Oh wait... Never mind, wrong example.

The users, yes, they have no problem with it, but most men prefer to be the main bread winners.

Sorry, I don't buy that. My ex-wife made more money than me for several years in the early years of my civilian career(s). Money was never an issue for us. Then again, she's an ex so maybe somehow it was? ;) (nah, not really)

or maybe since it didn't matter to me it proves i'm not a good man?? :( Dang it...

Life / Anything like netflix in Poland? [27]

does anyone know if there is a service like netflix in Poland? any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have visited too many countries to count and netflix works everywhere as long as you have high speed internet. In red china (NOT hong kong and taiwan) it gets locked out occationally (censorship) but a few hours later it's back on. If you want specific shows from back home (at least from the us) get slingbox, works like a charm.

slingbox.com

Just read some of the other replies, looks like you need DVD rental service or a good NTSC to PAL DVD burner... ;)

@ConstantineK

Every one of your posts has been full of vitriolic anti-Polish hate and thuggish attitude. You're a Russian nationalist thug, in the past you'd be the guy torturing people in prisons... You view yourself as a Russian patriot but reading your posts it's very obvious that you aren't instead you're just a thug full of hate. Keep believing in yourself because no one else does...

Genealogy / The last name is Krzywoszyja. Help? Am I Polish? [30]

The OP - as you can tell this forum is overflowing with sarcasm. Your last name is unusual but there's nothing wrong with it. It reminds me of the way the Native Americans (Indians) used to have very descriptive names:

CATORI: Hopi: "Spirit."

CHA'KWAINA: Hopi : "One Who Cries."

CHA'RISA: Hopi : "Elk."

CHAPAWEE: Sioux: "Industrious, Busy"

INOLA: Cherokee: "Black Fox"

ISI: Choctaw : "Deer."

ITUHA: "Sturdy Oak or White Stone"

KACHINA: Hopi : "Spirit, Sacred Dancer."

KAI: Navajo : "Willow Tree."

KAKAWANGWA: Hopi : "Bitter."

KALISKA: Miwok : " Coyote Chasing Deer."

KOLENYA: Miwok : " Coughing Fish."

KOSA: Cheyenne: "Sheep"

NITA: Choctaw : "Bear."

NITTAWOSEW: Algonquin : "She Is Not Sterile."

NITUNA: "Daughter"

NIYOL: Navajo: "Wind"

OHCUMGACHE: Cheyenne: "Little Wolf"

TSIISHCH'ILI: Navajo: "Curly Haired"

TACI: Zuni: "Washtub"

At least your name isn't Coughing Fish, or She Is Not Sterile! LOL

So be proud of being Polish and having an unusual name.

Ps. That's a very long name though, I'm sure you see all kind of spelling errors? You could always shorten it to Krzywo or Szyja ;)

You could even "correct" it to Prostoszyja - Straight Neck... LOL

News / Polish President Lech Kaczynski and gov officials die in a plane crash in Russia [686]

it was just completely retrofitted and the engines completely rebuilt last summer. i highly doubt it was an issue with the plane itself.

Agree. Talked to a Volga-Dnepr pilot in Tokyo last week and he said that the TU154M was a pretty nice airplane. He had some Boeing 727 time and said it flew similarly to the B727 and if so I'd have liked it too.

i sure hope so and i hope it's during Obama years still

Nope, Obama has already said it's not going to happen. All he's doing is sending some Patriot batteries which is nice but not the original project. He needs the money to grow the government but that's a different story that you and I disagree on... ;)
