Life / A Muslim Arab in Poland who loves Polish KABANOS & VODKA [20]

he's a Muslim. They, like Jews, don't eat pork

I have the idea (from comments they have made) that most or maybe all muslims in Poland have had pork but don't like the taste (a few have told me they don't like the taste... which how would they know?)

If a person grows up eating pork (or lamb or goat) the taste is normal. A person who hasn't had either of those all their life is likely to not like them (they all have specific aftertaste that regular eaters don't notice).

I remember the first time I had lamb... I kind of wanted to spit it out because of the aftertaste....

So religious prohibition aside most won't eat it more than a time or two

Food / What's more popular in Poland beer or vodka? [59]

Hijab just means a soft cover.

It's my understanding the word (and the garment) are modern creations of political islam (one of the worst ideas of the last 100 years).

Headscarves were usually called tarha.... men also wore/wear head coverings of various types in some places or on some occasions. The idea that women shouldn't show their hair in public (and that this should be enforced by law) is a product of globalization.

It seems frankly stupid to me as do a lot of political religious symbols...

Many drink (all the Quran says about alcohol (and drugs)

A Middle-Eastern colleague once told me that some muslims interpret the koran as specifically banning wine.... 'they don't say anything about vodka!'

I can understand why people in hot dessert climates would have cultural restrictions on alcohol (which dehydrates the drinker) but again... some carry it to ridiculously weird lengths.

News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [1440]

Solutions that respect our laws and values take time.

Here's a hint: you will have to change your laws or your values or far worse.

With migration, bad cultural values drive out good ones. Let hundreds of thousands of people from low trust chaotic societies into a high trust well-run society and either the arrivals try to assimilate (not intergrate, assimilate) or say goodbye to your well-run high trust society.

where there life is in danger.

I'm talking about cases where it has been determined their life isn't in danger (and especially if they've committed crimes like rape in Germany).

Which is more important to you.... the 'human rights' of a rapist? The right of German girls and women to not be raped by pseudo-refugees?

Do you want a solution or not?

No solution will be acceptable to those who don't want a solution. What's your plan?

Some countries are not considered safe for return which brings up legal hurdles for deportation.

Keep them in protective custody then. Germany does not owe them anything more.

One good solution: Make all announcements regarding asylum in person. If the person is rejected then they go into custody awaiting deportation.

You'd be amazed at how many will do what they can to return to their 'unsafe' countries in those conditions.

At present people are notified by mail and simply go underground so they can't be found if the decision doesn't go their way, like Herr Stabbby von Stabstab in Solingen.

whoever call a kettle a kettle it only gains the AfD new sympathisants!

Yes. Calling the AfD Nazis is understood by many as 'well.... I guess maybe the Nazis weren't so bad....' Not a smart strategy.

Change Germany's horrible dysfunctional migration policy (including rapid deportation of criminals and immediate deportation of those turned down for asylum who re-enter the country).

How such policies could be controversial is.... mind-boggling...

AfD aren't nazis.... the single issue that makes them popular is Germany's dysfunctional and broken migration system.

Wanting to deport illegal alien criminals does not make them nazis....

I don't like them because of their russian ties but their popularity is entirely due to mainstream parties being out of touch with the population.

STILL denied that immigration was the main reason for the rise of the AfD

Note this (via Andrew Hammel)

tagesschau.de/inland/regional/badenwuerttemberg/swr-straftaeter-abgeschoben-erleichterung-in-illerkirchberg-100.html

Everybody's happy that an afghan criminal is being deported except for a young woman working for a refugee rights group who's almost crying at the thought of a convicted rapist being deported....

There's no arguing with or convincing someone like that... you just have to ignore them.

the AfD....they got it sweet now.

German political impotence strikes again!

And the resistance with which 'center' and leftist Germans are opposed to deporting anyone (including criminals with multiple offenses) means AfD will simply grow....

Which sucks because they're funded and controlled by moscow....

Language / How to correctly pronounce "złoty" in Polish? "ł" letter [17]

ł sounds exactly like double LL in the word WELL

Maybe 70 years ago!!!!

Pronouncing ł like an American "dark l" (like ll in 'all') is the old pronunciation, then called 'stage pronunciation' (maintained in some broadcasting/theater until some times in the 1960s) and now usually referred to as 'kresowe' pronunciation (it's still found in some populations in former Soviet places).

But in modern Poland the universal pronunciation of ł is like 'w' in 'water'

ładny = WAHD-nih

miło = MEE-woh

Łódź = WOOTCH

Life / Differences between Irish, British, Polish, American and other nations culture, tradition, music - loose talk [241]

Is it possible that Poles are too stingy

It was a trick post... and you fell for it.

"Arizona" is not normal wine, it's 'jabol'.... the closest US equivalents might be things like md 20/20, thunderbird or night train

It became famous as the title of a late 90s documentary on the hopelessness of life on commie collective farms after the collapse of communism.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabol

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_(film_1997)

it's even on youtube

How do you not know this?

because it is not even known whether normal parties

Define 'normal'.... AfD (as much as I despise them) is the _only_ mainstream political party that agrees with a large majority of the population on an important issue.

Germany should follow Denmark's lead. A mainstream traditional party modified their platform to conform with majority opinion of Danes and the 'extreme' right party disappeared.

What's stopping them apart from cowardice and fecklessness?

Food / Buying alcohol, wine in Poland. It's very difficult. [86]

Swedes had a notorious reputation for being terrible lushes. The Finns too

Swedes (like Norwegians and Danes) actually don't drink as much as some nationalities but when they do drink they tend to binge....

Finns are a separate case and have a very weird relationship to alcohol.... they seem to use drinking jokes like others use sex jokes...

state run liquor stores... Not sure about Poland

Well in the PRL everything was state run which is where the everyday term for liquor store (monopolowy) came from.

Language / Będę kupowała/będę kupić [18]

future subjunctive

Polish doesn't have a subjunctive... it has a single irrealis form usually called the conditional in English that corresponds with much/most use of the subjunctive in languages where it's important (like Spanish).

compare:

he would go 'poszedłby' sp: iria

I want him to go

sp: Quiero que vaya (I-want that he-go)

pl. Chcę, żeby poszedł (I-want that-he-would go)

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

Hungarian Paprikakrem eats ketchup's lunch.... far better. Ketchup has it's purposes... I guess... but paprikakrem is great!

Not that csipos (means 'spicy' or 'hot' = pikantny) contrasted with edes ('mild' 'sweet' = łagodny)

attached bottle caps, an inconvenience to nobody,

Attached bottle caps are the devil's pepper grinder!

They are an abomination... they make it harder to drink from, pour from or to re-close the bottles they're on.

And they do nothing for litter.

Dumb, dumb, dumb idea....
