News / How hard will Poland be hit by the economic crisis? [116]

One thing that they do here is show ads for BMWs etc that say "Tylko 1700" and show the monthly rate followed by an asterisk, this kind of advertising should show the total cost more clearly.

On the whole however personal debt levels are far lower than in the UK, even taking into account the lower earnings - in Poland it's about 7.000 Euros per adult. In the UK over 30.000 pounds. Problem is that in the UK it's far easier to talk to the bank when you have problems.

Sterling won't be included in any flight to quality this time round - too much govt debt, Brexit, too volatile over the last 5 years. There are some upsides but your average sovereign fund manager won't want to stand up and spend hours justifying to his bosses why he is taking the risk.

Yes in Bydgoszcz you might get some good value at the moment. but I wouldn't have thought there are too many furnished places on the market ?

News / How hard will Poland be hit by the economic crisis? [116]

Prices didn't fall that much in the last crash - was more like a 10 percent fall.

A 30 percent fall against the dollar is possible but unlikely. It's about 7 percent down now. Against the pound then that kind of fall is very unlikely - has not happened since the late 90s when Poland was far more unstable.

Estimated that 80 percent of Polish businesses would be unable to function with zero income for more than 3 months. Most people will be paying March wages but at the end of April it will be very tricky for some to meet payroll, so that really is the govts timeline for getting some parts of the economy up and running again.

Try and get the rent down too before you buy a restaurant - if it's a good location you could do well as more people will stay in Poland for holidays. But try and get that fixed cost low !

People you never think about - IT consultants for example as companies will cancel their projects when they are short of cash.

Same for cars and house builders, people won't have cash

It's been an employees market for about 5 years and the sudden swing will come as a shock to young people especially

Russian trolls will. be in trouble too - low oil price will bankrupt the gangster state and Putin will have to concentrate on home affairs

News / Throwing away the constitution in Poland? [626]

They probably even themselves out though I think in October the diaspora on balance voted against PiS.

But I can't see these elections going ahead - for a start the polling place is a workplace and they just introduced a bunch more restrictions.

How are the Poles abroad going to vote ?

Anyway this requires disobedience from mayors etc - it's too serious to let them get away with it. Tax strike if required.

Law / Which is the best city in Poland to open a kebab shop? [56]

A delicate balance between low competition and finding enough drunk people to eat this unhealthy food - younger Polish people eat kebabs but most.y when drunk.

Warsaw and most big towns already have lots, many open 24 hours and a few of them are organized chains. Only a handful are good.

Maybe a smaller town with a university like Gorzow or Zielona Goea ?

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

Not really. They have the same in the US - reciting the pledge, lessons about the constitution etc. But it makes sense - they had to make Americans out of all nationalities and kinds of immigrants. Certainly never got upset about it.

This and dressing up as a Frenchman are not the same as getting the Hitler Jugend to grass on their jewish neighbors.

the indefinite school suspension has not been thought through - a couple of towns unilaterally announced their own suspensions without any indication of what happens next. The negative consequences might well outweigh the effects of the virus - certainly no analysis was made of that.

And it definitely contributed to the panic buying - if the govt can suspend travel and school with a few hours notice and close private business like cinemas and gyms then of course they might close stores so you would be stupid not to do any shopping for essentials. But that created more crowds and more transmissions.

Life / Why so many Poles use a second hands clothes? [113]

There is one on Tamka- probably a few others.

Also look out for vinyl exchange events that shopping malls are holding - they can get quite busy. Google Gielda Plyty and you will find some for sure.

Not sure why your question has been added to one about second hand clothes by the way !
