News / Presidential elections 2020 - your opinions about campaign, candidates [2222]

I remember the previous campaign when Komorowski was ridiculed for not knowing English as opposed to Duda who was said to know it.
Where did his knowledge of English go?
Trzaskowski definitely seems fluent in English.
Remember that video of a guy claiming to be American who asked him questions in English?
That was ridiculous. Who would have had such an idea anyway?

History / Poland must get back Lwow, Wilno and Brest back [345]

@dolnoslask
If I remember well your family was a victim of NKWD, not UPA.
Also even if you are willing to bury the hatchet and think it's a good idea to have a Polish-Ukrainian state, there are some more 80 million Poles and Ukrainians who may think otherwise. I can't speak for Ukrainians but their independence is pretty recent after years of being part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austrian and Russian empires and the USSR.

Also there's the conflict in Donbas. If we become one country, it's godna be Polish borders being attacked by Russia. I remember when the conflict started, my aunt and uncle were thinking of evacuation to Germany :)

But no one is stopping you from spreading the idea - think of starting a political party, get followers in Poland and Ukraine and who knows?

History / Poland must get back Lwow, Wilno and Brest back [345]

The idea of Poland uniting with Ukraine just doesn't make sense with Poles still remembering Volhynia and Ukrainians thinking of Polish oppressors.
Is Poland rich enough to support Ukraine economically?
Then we still have the war in Donbas. Ołeksij Nejiżpapa said quite recently that they are preparing for confrontation. Thousands have been killed already.

I really hope for Ukraine and Ukrainians that nothing happens but generally speaking Ukraine has more concerns than Polish sentiments for Lwów.

@Vlad1234
You're still not getting my point.
Poles greatly contributed to the development of Lwów whether you like it or not. Its history is related to the history of Poland.
But I don't think there would be a lot of volunteers among Poles to move there. Even among the descendants of those who were resettled from the city. Even among those who argue that Lwów is Polish. Mere nostalgia is too little to make such a decision.

As for Ukrainian migration to Poland, yeah right, as if Ukrainians are forced to move here because bloody oppressive Poles decided so. It was their decision.

Ukraine has more serious problems than the Polish nostalgia of the prewar Lwów.
You'd better worry about that because I kind of guess you'd rather live in Ukraine rather than Little Russia or whatever other name they may think of as this term is several hundred years old.

@Vlad1234
You are being quite selective.
First of all, since you were so eager to mention the Polish migration to the UK, why are you so silent about the Ukrainian migration to Poland -almost half a million working here legally -add their children and those who work illegally.

Secondly, the prewar population of Lwów wasn't Polish vs Ukrainians. You dare question the data pawian provided it was Poles who did the census. Well, Austrians did several censuses in the 19/20th century and unfortunately for your argument, the majority (religion/language) were Roman Catholic and Polish. Then Jews and Greek Catholic /Ruthenian were third.

Whether you like it or not, Poles have contributed greatly to the development of Lwów. Afaik, you can still see many Polish traces in Lwów. I would like to see them one day but I have no intention whatsoever to move there.

I also don't think it's Poland who are the greatest danger to the independence of Ukraine.

History / Poland must get back Lwow, Wilno and Brest back [345]

@Zlatko
Have you actually been to Poland?

I have been to several European countries and there are some picturesque places and rough looking places as well. That applies to both Central and Western Europe including places like London, Paris or Naples. I could name some more I guess.

As for Bulgaria, the old town in Plovdiv is great but I have seen also smaller places where ancient Roman monuments are mixed with beautiful historical buildings and post communist ones. I don't expect Bulgarians to get rid of them just because. Some are well preserved, some are not. What struck me most about Bulgaria was abandoned looking villages we drove through on the way to Sofia. I didn't get a chance to visit the capital -except for the airport but I guess I could find not so good looking parts like in any other European capitals I have seen. Or like in many other towns and cities.

And please don't post random google maps links.
I'm not going to deny there are some rough looking areas in Poland. But I have seen such in many other European towns.

@Zlatko
Fix what you have in Bulgaria first before you give advice to Poland ;)

@Vlad1234
Since 'getting back' Lwów would probably equal another armed conflict I don't think it would make sense. What's the next step? Depopulating the city and populating it with Poles?

Nevertheless, whether you like it or not Polish people lived in Lwów and greatly contributed to its history.
These were the times we don't know when Poles, Ruthenians and Jews lived together.

News / POLAND to have its own automobile brand (back), the SYRENA! [36]

So they failed to start the production, didn't they?
I can't remember the car really. I probably saw it just several times probably in the 90s. It drew people's attention as it was so rare. I remember the sound it made and the smell. Why the smell? Does anyone know? Was it typical for this brand or just the one/s I came across?

And I remember a moskwicz or warszawa pernamently parked close to where I lived. I guess it was long out of order.

Life / Izabela? - Advice with Polish name for a girl [36]

Zancia is what I remember about Granica. Our Polish teacher asked what we thought her original name was. She was pointing out how many borrowings from foreign languages they used including Mam ból głowy.

I read the book but I can't remember it much.
I didn't read Ferdydurke and Potop (the only book of the Trilogy that I haven't read or seen) and probably some more.
But I read Nad Niemnem even though we didn't discuss it at school ;)
Anyway, Iza is the most common short version of Izabela in Poland as I believe.

News / Tesco abandon Poland [66]

You can't really expect super quality stuff at supermarkets.
I haven't done shopping at Tesco in Poland as there are none where I live here but I did in London. Just supermarket stuff.

And bread they sold was far worse than anything I got in Poland.
Biedronka, Lidl, Auchan, Carrefour or Tesco have their own cheaper 'versions' of popular products. Others probably do, too.
I actually think Biedronka sells some nice stuff compared to others. I'd rather buy something labelled biedronka than Auchan.
But it may depend on a store.
Also if you go to a bigger store, it's obvious they have a wider range of products.

Language / Am I the only person that can't sing in Polish at all? [48]

Since there are thousands and thousands songs in Polish I kind of don't think it's impossible to sing in Polish. People who don't speak Polish as their first language may find it difficult, though.

History / Life in Poland in 1800-1900 [18]

@lmikucki
Polish Wiki mentions the village was burned by Germans in 1944.
pl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaski_(wojew%C3%B3dztwo_podlaskie)

It also mentions a census from 1921 so I don't think it was annexed by bolsheviks in the Polish -Bolshevik War.
Was there anything?

The census mentions that in 1921 the village had 180 inhabitants so it was pretty small. And it probably experienced pretty much the same as other villages in the area. It wasn't a peaceful time.

Roughly speaking:
During the partitions of Poland it was in the Russian partition
1914 -1918 -WW1
1918 -Poland regains independence
1919 -1920 Polish - Bolshevik War
1939 - Poland is attacked by Nazis and Soviets.

The note about Nazis burning the village comes from a book on Nazi crimes in the area. Bolsheviks/Soviets weren't probably any better.
Some local historians may know more.

Genealogy / Last names are Wasiewski and Waleryszak [3]

Waleryszak
nlp.actaforte.pl:8080/Nomina/Ndistr?nazwisko=Waleryszak+

Wasiewski
nlp.actaforte.pl:8080/Nomina/Ndistr?nazwisko=Wasiewski

Wąsiewski

nlp.actaforte.pl:8080/Nomina/Ndistr?nazwisko=W%C4%85siewski

So actually they're not very common.

As for records from Koziebrody some are indexed here at geneteka but I can't see the names you mentioned.
So perhaps they were born and married in years that weren't indexed yet or perhaps there was some spelling mistakes.
Have a look yourself. Check the dates and first names you're looking for.
