Couple of things....

Planes are less safe because the Silicon valley model (get a product out the door as quickly as possible and fix glitches later) has expanded to other areas. There was a horrific crash a few years ago because they (following SV logic) had not had either backup or override features....

DEI policies in hiring means that they're going for a color coordinated look in staff rather than sheer competence.....

Gonna get worse before it gets better.....

IIRC scripture suggests a later summer/early autumn birth.... early in the US (before it was the US) it wasn't celebrated either for the same reason and only really became a holiday much later.

The European holliday seems to be a combination of Roman Saturnalia, Northern Yule and Slavic Koljada (maybe another paganfest or two).

I'm not complaining. I'm not a Christian* but I recognize that a great strength of Christianity is its protean nature that mixes and combines with other practices which no other world religion comes close to matching.

*I have no religious faith but I sometimes describe myself as a cultural protestant...

NATO doesn't want war because most NATO members are not remotely prepared for that....

Not so much the word itself but many Poles think the second word of 'kasza manna' is an adjctive (cause the two n's) but actually it's a noun (manna as in 'from heaven).

So instead of saying 'proszę kaszę manną' it should be 'proszę kaszę mannę'.....

What about folk etymology (popular theories about word origins that are wrong)? One folk etymology in Polish is the idea that Włochy (Italy) comes from long hair. Actually it's related to the Volcae..

Yes, it's a 'minced oath' of which there are very many in Polish...

Makes sense because the 24th is actually the main even of Christmas celebrations in Poland. The 24th as a working day (and 26th as a holiday) have never made sense to me.

There do need to be at least two shopping Sundays before the 24th though.

She had tested positive for a banned substance but it was determined that the source was an over-the-counter medicine that was contaminated with trace amounts of the substance and that she was not at fault.

Nevertheless she was suspended for a month which hurts her ranking....

Anyone else find it odd and dysfunctional that sports doping complex uses more fine-tuned tests than the producers of medicines do?
