Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [940]

Likewise. Every single year, I bring forward a proposal to get rid of tests and exams and to replace them with something more practical, and every year, I'm told "...parents expect tests and grades". It doesn't matter how much evidence I bring, or how well the point is argued, it's just the same old story.

I remember when I first started in my current job, I gave some 4th class kids an open book test - they had to prepare a comic strip, using any materials they could find. Of course, one parent whined, because she wasn't able to prepare her darling child in advance and it wasn't a fair test blah blah blah.

But I doubt they will ever be able to make it so fair.

I think it's absolutely impossible. For instance, I work with one teacher who is frankly embarrassingly incompetent. She doesn't know anything that isn't in the textbook, but because she's incredibly nice (and her subject isn't tested), parents and pupils love her. Her lack of knowledge is excruciating, and she has little interest in the life of the school, but her 'performance' is high.

Pawian, how do you handle cheating during tests in the classroom? My policy is this -

1st class - paper torn up (for dramatic effect) and a big fat "F" given to them on a A4 piece of paper. Usually does the trick, and after one gets caught, they won't cheat again for a while. They get to do it again in peace, and normally I'll find them during the normal school day to come and do it again. I'll tell the parents, but always with a "please don't give them into trouble, let them discuss it with you first" comment.

2nd/3rd class - paper torn up and parents informed. No consequences, but they have to come and do it again after school.
4th class - paper torn up, parents informed and a mild telling off about what they've done. They also need to come and do it again after school.

5th-8th - paper torn up, parents informed, and a severe lecture about not doing it again. They don't get to do it again, it just gets counted as a 1. They also have some punishment homework, which usually gets picked to bring them some suffering - for instance, having to learn and act out a short piece for the rest of the class.

I'd personally rather not give classes 1-3 any tests at all, but stupid parents...

The problem is who and how is going to measure the quality of teaching?

It's nearly impossible to do properly, and it's an awful idea to rely on parent/pupil feedback. It's also very difficult to do it fairly across subjects, because something like English takes way more prep than PE.

News / Polish diplomat Zbigniew Brzezinski has died [53]

He wasn't a true Pole at all. He sold out for cash and his actions led to an enemy nation knowing exactly how to destroy Poland and Poles in the time of war.

Interestingly, he met Adam Michnik very early on.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [657]

It's a matter of time before someone builds such a horror in the Polish countryside.

Oh wait, they already did: nto.pl/zamek-w-stobnicy-tak-ma-wygladac-gotowa-budowla-powstajaca-w-puszczy-noteckiej/ar/13330455 :(

Chaos implies freedom

It does, but when you have a beautiful view ruined by some idiot's castle designed to the latest fashions, I'm not so sure it's a good thing. I was shocked when I first drove from Kraków to Zakopane, though the billboards that litter the Zakopiańska are a true eyesore.

Well, what's most interesting for me is the Czech attitude towards their neighbours. They simply don't care, but they demand the same in return. There's no problem with nosy neighbours or neighbours being idiots, but don't expect them to actually pay any interest towards you as a person, except in the local pub. Poland is different, and it's obvious that the Polish minority there has adopted the Czech attitude towards others.

Apart from that, what attracted me to the area (it's the area near Jablunków / Wędrynia) was that unlike Polish villages, Czech ones are much more orderly. The landscape on the Polish side is scarred with huge houses being built without any order, whereas the Czech side seems much more organised. Of course, the attraction was that everyone speaks or at least understands Polish there, so there's no language barrier ;)

Travel / Lovely trips to Poland - Warsaw and Wrocław, Krakow and Warsaw, Poznań and Gdańsk [43]

If you get the chance, I really recommend a trip to Brest in Belarus. Large parts of it actually resemble pre-war Poland, and it's a timewarp in terms of how early 1990's would have looked in Poland. The journey from Warsaw to Terespol is beautiful as well - much more so than I would have guessed, especially once you get past Biała Podlaska.

History / Cursed soldiers controvercy - not all Poles respect them [282]

According to IPN historical research (2019) "Bury" wasn't guilty of genocide.

Why are you making it so easy, Ironside?

Even the IPN prosecutors made it clear that the statement posted on the IPN has no legal validity. More info here - tokfm.pl/Tokfm/7,103085,24554199,komunikat-ipn-o-burym-wywolal-konsternacje-w-ipn-ogloszenie.html -

The content of the press release was not consulted with the investigating unit, and its announcement was made without our knowledge - said Dariusz Olszewski, prosecutor and deputy head of the IPN investigation department in Bialystok.

The rest of the article makes it crystal clear that nothing has changed legally. Bury is still a criminal regardless of what a press release says.

News / POKO and LGBT lobby is trying to sexualize children in Poland. Now they aim for adoption [120]

That's why I'm spending part of my spare time spreading the knowledge about traditionalist, conservatist and capitalist point of view.

And yet you actually push the PiS agenda almost non stop, which is anything but capitalist.

We had theory lessons, so now it's time for "practical skills"

You're just proving that you haven't actually read the document. It makes it crystal clear that the matrix should be age adjusted as appropriate. Children being able to talk about their own bodies is a crucial skill when combating child abuse, but you know, you'd actually have to read the document to understand that.

Spike, Spike.. such simple statements are typical of nationalists, who lack the intellectual capability of actually reading more than a few sentences.

As we already established, you've taken an isolated statement from the matrix without context. As anyone actually familiar with education knows, you need to read the whole document to understand the matrix, and the document makes it clear that it should be age-adjusted.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and in this case, you're obviously falsely representing what the document actually says.

Still, one has to wonder why you choose to live in Western Europe if it's so terrible ;)

This only helps Pis.

The opposite. PiS tend to do worse when they get involved in social politics, because it pushes them further to the right and away from the key electorate. It also pushes them into the territory of the nationalists, which means that the nationalists lose support as they can't compete against a much larger political organisation. It also means they end up wasting time and energy on fringe politics, leaving the ground clear for the main opposition - which is what they don't want to do.

The other problem, of course, is that PiS have very little credibility on this issue after the way they treated disabled children.

News / POKO and LGBT lobby is trying to sexualize children in Poland. Now they aim for adoption [120]

this was way too easy.

Way too easy indeed. He hasn't actually read the document, because if he had, he'd know that it makes it clear that the education has to be suitable for the age.

Like all good PiS supporters, he specialises in finding pieces of information to be outraged at without considering the wider context. He doesn't understand what this means, or even how it should be taught.

In this matrix, information is understood to provide facts from the field of sexuality education in a balanced, comprehensive, age-appropriate way

There's nothing wrong with that. Facts are much more important than sexual myths, and Poland is particularly bad for the amount of myths held by young people. Page 35-36 makes it clear that age 0-4 is a foundation for later learning, so anyone who actually knows anything about education would see it as a clear intention for children to be informed that it's fine to be comfortable with their own bodies and that it's nothing to be ashamed of.

News / POKO and LGBT lobby is trying to sexualize children in Poland. Now they aim for adoption [120]

Just as an aside, Spike's desperation might lie in the fact that young people are abandoning PiS. In the latest poll, young people support parties as:

KE: 24%
Wiosna: 22%
K'15: 18%
PiS: 13%

Or in other words, among the four largest parties, centre/left politics defeats right wing politics among young people 46%-31%. Quite significant.

You really are shilling so hard for PiS, aren't you? For an alleged nationalist, you seem to care way too much about the opposition.

Still, obviously mathematics aren't your strong point, because you've forgotten to mention that Wiosna are sitting there on 11% as well. 46%, plus 4% for Razem's grouping, gives a clear majority over right wing parties, which will only gain 44%.

Is this going to be a final nail to the coffin for POKO party?

The same party which, as the leading party within the KE electoral bloc, recorded a 2 point advantage in the most recent poll?

All the more important to fight for it. Things only change when you fight for it.

It's also not an electoral issue. In fact, it's very savvy to bring up this kind of thing, because it's a trap for right wing parties. They'll now howl homophobia from the rooftops, thus dragging them into a social debate and pushing them into the right wing, well away from the centrists that you need to win elections. More to the point, if it pushes PiS further to the right, then they'll also take votes away from the far right parties while losing support from the centrists.

Life / Why does Poland need racial diversity? Opinions [67]

In life, though? Poles are great at tests, but it doesn't reflect their ability in other areas, such as keeping outdoor areas clean or behaving with respect towards others, yet they're essential when it comes to quality of life.

I went to Belarus last summer, and it was remarkable just how clean everything was. I stopped in Łuków on the way back, and it was just so dirty in comparison.
